Question 30 rimfire

I think this dates to pre 1920.
Can anyone date it more closely by the box?
Thanks in advance.

With the manufacturer identified as "The Union Metallic Cartridge Co.", the box has to date from before 1911, when the name was changed to "Remington Arms Union Metallic Cartridge Co."

The Sharp's 4-barrel pepperbox was chambered in .30 rimfire.

Whitneyville Armory also produced a .30 cal rimfire revolver during the 1870's. Birdshead, spur trigger, tip-up, of course.

The last UMC catalog was published in 1910, and the .30 Short rimfire was listed in it at $9.00/thousand. In 1911, it became Remington-UMC.

Their is a book, “Cartridges Of The World”
Everyone should have one.
Ya don’t need a new one, Gun Shows, will have used ones.
I think the, newest, one is edition 12.
But if you are looking at information, older than 1965,
buy a older one for 2.00, Or, new at 20.00 (+/-)

Anyway, .30 Short (RF), 1860, Sharps 4 bbl, Colt New line,
(and probably some others)
.30 Long (RF), 1873, (added, some Single Shot Rifles)

In Looking at that page, just above it is the .25 Stevens, (RF).
Reminds me of the time, went to a Auction with my Dad, their was a old rusty Single Shot, (Stevens Crack Shot). Asked Dad If he could buy it for me, I and 6.75 in my Pocket. He bought it for 4.50.
Took it home, cleaned it up, spent Many hours on it. Sanded the metal, and wood, cold blued it, and then, dipped the front of stock, in a black glossy paint.
(TOTALLY, COMPLETELY, DESTROYED, ANY, possible collector value it had)
‘Looked like’, .22 rf, But they, and .22 WRM’s did not work. No markings on the bbl, (sure they were wore off).
Knew of a, ‘Old Fart’, out in the country, who, ‘Knew Everything about Guns’.

So one Sat Morning, (I’m 8-9), took my bike, and the gun, and biked 2 miles out to his farm. Went to the house, he wife said he was in the barn, went down, he finished milking, and was cleaning out the stalls & gutters.
I introduced myself, asked if he could identify that gun I brought along. He said he would, when he finished cleaning, while he was forking up the soiled straw, between the stantons. So I started on the gutters, using the well worn shovel leaning against the end stanton.
When we were done, we walked up to the house, he looked at the gun, (slight Chuckle), and said: “It sure does look purdy”’.
Then he said, “Come with me”. Went into the house, went into the basement, pulled some string lights, and I saw, a bunch of strange tools, on a bench, and shelves Full of Boxes. He put on a pair of glassed, tipped his head up, and started looking through the boxes. Pulled one out. It was Yellow, had a big ‘Chunuk’ printed on it, and, .25 Stevens, on the end.

We went upstairs, his wife had two coffee cups on the table, a large glass of fresh, cold, WHOLE, milk, and a huge plate of cookies. He set the ammo Box on the table. (I Didn’t ask, but SURE was Curious). He said: “I want a snack, if you want milk and cookies, their they are". He went to the sink, pumped the cistern pump couple of times, washed his hands, turned to me:, “Here, you do the same”.

Then sat down, wife pours coffee, we ate cookies and drank. Then, he tells me about the gun, and the Ammo.
When done, went outside, shot it a couple of times, then he, GAVE me, the rest of the part box.

That, was the start of a 30 year friendship, between a kid, and a old fart.
(I Learned SO Much from him)

Oh, I sold that gun, cause I could Not find any more ammo, (early-mid 60’s),
At another Auction, it Brought, 20.00. WOW !

Anyway, Buy, ‘Cartridges Of The World’,
It is something you will read, and reference very often.

Still reference, Frank Barnes statement, where he said about a wore out .32 Special:
“Cant hit a Flock of Barns, if you were standing inside of one”
(Which was taken OUT, in 72 or just later)

COTW is probably the best general reference for cartridges if you are not a collector. But there are other sources which are intended mainly for serious cartridge collectors and get into much more detail.
