Default Your Ammo Stock...

I was curious how much ammo most of you keep around (excluding those who make their own)

I have 2 handguns and have only been carrying for a year. At minimun, i like to have a box of HP and enough for a range session for each gun. Of course i would love a closet full but...$$$.

I do see ammo as gold so i do want to buy different types of HP for my 9mm.

two guns........ one caliber or two???.....

ammo stored in a cool, dry place..... is good for 20...30...40 years.....

if I was a "nubie"......I'd buy a box of 50 carry HPs every month ( or 2 weeks) until I had 500 rounds in my stash of carry ammo..................

every trip to Wallys-world..... buy what you are going to shoot ..... then double it...........once you get a 'Rolling stash" you are good to go.

Awesome stock guys or gals.

2 calibers. started with .380 and got a 9 for the low ammo cost. It was hurtful (to my wallet) going to the range with a .380. I will start buying a box of HP a month and will try to buy a ammo box full of 9mm.

I showed my wife the picture of the ammo cabinet and all i got was "dont get any ideas"....the idea has been there all along

As you probably know, buying ammo on-line in case lots, from companies like SGAmmo, is both easy and less expensive. But your home state takes that option away. Too bad.

Obviously .22LR stretches the ammo budget, if you have the urge for some trigger time.
Another avenue for shooting that supplies a lot of fun for potentially relatively low cost is informal sporting clays.

Our local DNR range offers clays launchers and range time for free. An adequate shotgun can be had for reasonable money, and by swapping a shorter barrel, make a great HD gun also. Clays and shells can be found for a reasonable price as well.
$20 gets me 2x 25-round 12ga clay shooting sets, and that's a lot of fun for the money.

I have one bullet. I shoot it, I go find it, I clean it up, I remelt it, I recast it, I resize it, I reload it then I am ready to shoot again. Follow up shot is kinda slow but I am working on it. I got all I need.

Let's see...

7000 .22 LR
800 .22 WMR
400 32 ACP
500 380 ACP
1500 .38 SPC in various flavors
300 357
400 30 Carbine

All of the above is factory

200 357 hand loads
200 38 SPC hand loads

Enough components to make several thousand more of either...

I primarily shoot revolver. Haven't bought much factory in 5 years or so except for carry..

In my case, the state defines how much I can keep without a special permit... and I don't like special permits... so I run it right up to the no-permit limit and not a round over.

Here is some of it. I like to keep 2k of each caliber of the common stuff on hand and replace it as I use it. Shotgun shells are stored elsewhere.

Somewhere in the neighborhood of 4,000-5,000 rounds of factory loaded centerfire ammo in 6 pistol & carbine calibers.

Enough components to handload another 10,000+

Somewhere north of 20,000 rounds of 22 rimfire.

You might consider another one as a backup, I had the same setup but one day I must've shot high and been looking for it ever since.

I stock 200-300 rounds of JHP's for each caliber I shoot.

You don't have to do it all at once. Keep a couple of mags full of your carry ammo and a box on the shelf. Then, as $$$ allows, add a box or two until you have a couple hundred rounds or more. This should give you enough to shoot a mag or two when you like, and get you thru any future shortages.

As for target ammo...I just keep buying!

That is a good idea. I did find me a wheel weight in a Walmart parking lot the other day and I am going try to get another bullet ready.

Look back at the events of the recent past, and the months of shortages.

Figure what you would need to keep up your range / practice time over (let's use an an example) 6 month period, accumulate that as a base, and then replace / add on as you can.

All depends on your use.

I consider a minimum of 1,000 rounds per caliber. I keep much more for selected calibers.

I just picked up 1K of 45 ACP at a ridiculous price online... someone messed up... 2 days later it was $1.50 per box more... and that new price was a great price... wish I had bought 2K... or 3K... almost 9mm prices... like it has been said before... buy what you can when you can... and get a few ammo cans to store them in... and replace as you go...

I have the most of 9mm, quite a bit of .38spl and .357 mag, as much of .45acp and a couple hundred rds of .45 Colt. For rifles I have an equal amount of .223/5.56 and .308/7.62x51. Lots of 12 ga. That's about it. Oh yeah, as many rds of .22lr as all the centerfire, want to keep balance. Joe

380 is almost as cheap as 9. In the last couple months I paid $0.17 a round shipped for steel case 380 and $0.22 a round shipped for brass cased 380

After the shortages, I buy when there are deals, to make sure I don't run short. Don't have exact numbers, this is a rough estimate (and none are reloads):

9mm- approx 2 cases of Yavex (124 gr sealed primers and cases, seems to be NATO spec). These cases came in 1450, not 1000; I've used 5 boxes, so I guesstimate 2650 or so if my math is correct.
About 900 of Magtech 115 gr FMJ. A full 1000 case of S&B white box (NATO stamps on some). About 400 rds of random FMJ boxes (Herters, Aguila 124 gr, Blazer Brass 124 gr). Got a case of Magtech flat-tip FMJ on the way, Sportsman's Guide had it $194 shipped.
Maybe 25 Winchester FMJ, I don't buy a lot, I buy enough to test and then keep the rest awhile. I figure soon I will shoot these off and get another box of the same.

9 mak- maybe 2500-3000, this includes a full case of Brown Bear, a full case of Wolf, and a bunch of random (some brass GECO and Fiocchi, some Monarch/Brown Bear from Academy, and others); one box of 50 Silver Bear HPs.

About 5000 22lr, various makes, everything from Eley Match to Remington bucket... I have an old Springfield bolt action and a H&R revolver that will shoot the cheap stuff, and I use the good stuff through a High Standard.

About 2500 7.62x39, around 400 8mm Mauser, 2-300 7.65x53 Argentine, about 400 7.62x54R, maybe 200 30-30.

About 300 rds of .45 acp, 200 rds of .32 acp.

I have been buying empty ammo cans at Wal Mart for the past few months, staggered out over time. I usually get questions from someone what I am using them for. I just smile and say " To store stuff". I have about a half-dozen full cans, various calibers, and I'm not through.

If you buy the 20mm can from Sportsmansguide for around $25 when they are in stock they hold about 4x what a 50 cal can have. Hard to carry when full but work great for storing ammo at home

Don't really know a round count. I keep an eye out for good prices.

As mentioned, you fill those big cans up and one guy can't carry them. The military made them to be carried on vehicles.

I'm old. Been a hoarder for a long time, don't see a reason to stop. When I decide to take the dirt nap, my offspring will have a problem.

Someone stated above about the weight problem. Even .50 cal boxes can weigh too much. Not so bad with factory ammo, but reloads pack a lot denser. You can hardly lift a can full of 44s. 38/357s are even worse. Rifle ammo is like feathers. But components are the worst.

And I don't stack ammo cans above 5 high. Lifting them to move them is bad enough, but lifting them high is too much to ask. I don't unpack factory ammo as a general rule. Back when the last guy got elected I went to Wally world and bought in big. Then when the ammo scare got bad, I sold some. A sin, I know. But I still have more than I will ever shoot.

The only caliber I'm short on is 32 Colt. No, not the same as 32 S&W. I've only had the gun for 5 or 6 years, and I haven't even shot a full box. No, I don't have dies nor have I ever seen any. I also haven't see .299 bullets for sale.

That's very unfortunate

Those are actually magnetic labels that I ordered from AmmoCan Magnets.com

They come in yellow or black font. 50 cal or 30 cal size

I just counted my ammo fort a few weeks back while moving it from one part of the house to another. It totaled out to 42,725 rounds not including 12g shotgun ammo. About half that total is 22lr and includes 7k in green tip 5.56. I could use a couple of thousand more rounds of 10mm and 40 S&W for sure.
