Ammo preference for the Model 41
Hi Gang,
Before I begin, let me just say I searched through the first 10 pages of this ammo forum, plus even entered the search parameter "ammo preference for the model 41"....still nothing.
In just a few weeks, the weather will be warm enough to go to the range....lookin for a temp of about +4 to 10 Celsius. The paperwork is underway for my most recent purchase, so I'm doing a bit of research to get the right ammo for my new baby.
So I'm asking the ammo aficionados here, if they can recommend a few brands of ammo for my model 41. I've heard that high velocity is not a good choice. But that's about all I know. This is my first Smith and Wesson as well, hence why I'm appealing to any other Model 41 owners here, that can steer me in the right direction.
Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks for reading.

Stick with standard velocity - it's said (as you note) that the 41 will batter itself to death with high velocity ammo. I'm not sure if that's really true, but SV will generally be more accurate anyway and if you're shooting in competition the SV should allow better scores in the timed and rapid fire stages due to slightly reduced recoil. As to brand, rumor has it that the 41 was "designed" to use CCI SV. I'm similarly not sure if that's true (and not sure how you would design a gun around a particular ammo in any case), but it's certainly true in my experience that many 41 shooters have good results with CCI.
The Model 41 seems to be a law unto itself - some guns do well with just about any ammo (I have one of those, thankfully). Others can be very fussy. The best thing to do is get ahold of as many brands of SV or "target" ammo as you can and then carefully test the gun for function and accuracy with each. And pray it doesn't demand to be fed only Eley Tenex.

As already stated, stick with standard velocity. The gun was designed for it and handles it quite well. Over the years I have used Winchester T22, Remington Target, Olin white box, Federal 711B and CCI Standard velocity in numerous Model 41 pistols. For some reason, only the CCI now remains consistent both in accuracy, but more importantly in reliability.

My first choice is CCI 40 grain Standard Velocity. The gun loves it too. SOME 41's might need a 1/2 pound lighter recoil spring (7 pounds instead of the 7.5 Factory spring) for reliable functioning with the std. vel. while others work just fine as is. My own M41 would hick-up on the first shot or two with the Factory Spring but after changing it to a 7 pounder it works 100% all the time.
Federal Std. Vel. is my second choice but now that .22 ammo isn't hard to get anymore, CCI is what I prefer. They are both actually owned by the same Company and may even be made on the same assembly line - who knows??

CCI Standard Velocity #0032
CCI Green Tag #0033
CCI Pistol Match #0051
or
Federal Target .22LR #711B
or
Remington Eley (various loads)
I listed that many because each if my target rimfire pistols lines a different load from above. You will have to find the one your gun likes. The Eley ammo is very expensive and I only mention it in case the other 4 loads don't produce the results you're looking for. Good luck...

Thanks Ranger, a recoil buffer might be the way to go if I run into a wall. 👍

Hi Archangel, thanks for the list of ammo choices.
I should have my gun by the end of next week. Still waiting for the CFO (Chief Firearm's Office), to approve the transfer. Once they notify us (the seller and the buyer "me"), then the seller can ship the gun to me. He lives in the same province as I do (Ontario), so it shouldn't take more than a couple days to get to me. We have a really assanine firearms system of laws and transfers up here in Canada....the waits are painfully long for firearm purchases up here.
So thanks again for the ammo selection. I'm going to drop by my neighborhiod Cabelas to see what kind of 22 ammo they stock. They may not have the same ammo types as you fellas down south of the border, but at least 2 I hope.
Thanks again boys 😎👍

Generally, a, ‘Standard Velocity’, ammo, is likely to be more accurate.
Something under the speed of sound. (about 1125fpc)
As, ‘breaking’, the Sound Barrier, will create a, wobble.
(Check Chuck Yeager’s experiences in the X-1 in 47)
In most cases, CCI Standard, is the cheapest, and the most reliable.
Their are Most Certainly others, but certainly more expensive.
It is what works well in my 3 MKII’s
Years ago, when a 50 round box of, ‘Cheep’ .22 ammo was .89 -.99 a box, The, top, 3.00 - 3.50 a Box, Eley, RWS, etc, was the cat’s meow. (However today, I think I would try some, Eley Target, at around, 5.70 a box)
(Do remember, plunking down a shiny new Quarter, for a 50 Box of Remington’s, to go to the town dump, and shoot Rats with LOLOL)
Speed Of Sound, or, Mach, is generally 760 MPH
(affected by pressure, humidity, temperature, etc. etc)
Or 1125 fpc.
Amazing, today, a fighter jet can fly at 7,000 MPH.
And from NY to London, it is 3,500 Miles.

Mine has shot anything I have tried in it but I stick to CCI standard velocity because I just use mine for target shooting and when shooting offhand I know if the shot is outside of the x ring at 25 yards it's because the gun was not pointing in the right direction. From a rest SK match is a bit more accurate than the CCI but shooting off hand I am not good enough to tell the difference.

Bought a 5000 round case of CCI SV, only to find out that 3/4 of the rounds won't chamber in my High Standard pistol. Chamber is clean and shines like chrome....Many people are reporting the same thing with some of the new batches of CCI SV.. Google it...or go on TargetTalk forum...several threads on it..
I always swore by CCI, but after this, I have to reevaluate future CCI buys...

I've been a fan of Federal Auto Match bulk. It's hard to beat CCI, but I've found the Federal to be a little less expensive and just as reliable and accurate ( but dirtier than the CCI)

Mine shoots about any SV ammo well. It doesn't feed Eley very well.
