ANOTHER SQUIB with factory smmo
GEEZ! Yesterday, I experienced the second squib with factory .38 ammo in a month. First with Fiocchi 130gr fmj, and yesterday with Great Lakes 125gr lead swc In 55 years of hand gun shooting I've probably had 5 or 6 squibs with factory center fire hand gun ammo. Apparently QA/QC with ammo has become like everything else. The best shooting accessory I've purchased in quite some time is a hard wood dowel ! BTW, these two squibs occurred in two different revolvers ( 642-1 and 15-4) in perfect working condition

Ive had a 1/2 dozen in rimfire in the last few months.(in different pistols) and a couple in .38 special(Remingtons) It seems the ammo built during the "drought" was not constructed to very high standards, is my only theory.All my old stuff still goes Bang every time.

Never heard of Grate Lakes. Never had a squib. Seems that mine dont suffer from QC problems. What else suffering from QC these days?

That ammo must have been made with MIM parts or had a lock on it.

Just for giggles, check your Revolver with KNOWN TO BE GOOD box of ammo just to confirm you do not have a problem with light strikes. Not saying you do - but just as a "proofing" if you will.

Good point regarding primer strikes. I had to return a new S&W 642 which gave me a few misfires due to light primer strikes. S&W excellent customer service and repair shop made the fix and return painless (but one shouldn't have to return a new firearm for light primer strikes).
I also use factory ammo from Rem, Win, Fed (includes AE), Buffalo Bore, Grizzly, Underwood, Blackhills and Double Tap - never had a problem with these. Most times "you get what you pay for."

+1 on post 5&6;
Might check your spring, just for the heck of it.
My newer 686 worked loose and caused light strikes.

How would a light strike cause a squib? If the primer goes off the powder will ignite. A light strike either sets the primer off or fails to set the primer off. If the primer fails to ignite there is no squib, and if the primer ignites there is no squib unless something else is wrong.

Ray Chapman carried a piece of WW .45 acp brass around in his pocket. At the appropriate time in every one of his training classes he would produce it and tell the story of his losing the IPSC World Championship the second time he was competing because of this piece of brass. He was shooting WW factory ammo given to him by WW. He was leading and right down to the last few shots against his closest competitor. He had a failure to fire and had to do the Tap, Rack, Bang drill. That time lost cost him the championship.
His words of advice was, "Do you really think that you don't need to know how to reload quickly? Do you really think that you don't need to be carrying spare ammo in a readily accessible location? Well, take a look at this factory ammo loaded by the best ammo manufacture in the world." It did not have the flash hole punched between the primer pocket and the powder chamber. .......

This ^^^. Some of y'all are confusing a squib with a mis-fire or hang-fire.

Although it has been several years since I encountered a "factory" squib load. I had just had a 625 Model of 1989 returned from the S&W Performance Center. I was shooting the then new Remington .45ACP +P. I was shooting a cylinder full of this and just before letting the hammer fall on the 6th round I hesitated thinking that the 5th round didn't feel or sound right. I lowered the hammer on that last round and opened the cylinder to double check and found the 5th round sitting about 2" in front of the barrel throat. I'm glad I didn't let that last round fly it would most likely have ruined my day to say the least. That S&WPC revolver is one of the nicest I've ever owned!

WHEW!!! Been there. I've learned to very aware of the "sound" of the shot. Revolver or auto, .22 or center fire, factory or hand load. Too many close calls

Never had a factory load squib, thank God, but I have had a few with bad primers. Nice heavy hit on the primer just didn't go off. I usually send them back to the manufacturer, and they have sent me $20/$30/$40 worth of coupons on different occasions. I'd rather have no bang than just enough to send one 2" down the barrel. Good thing you caught it Oldster.
