Default Remington golden Saber piercing primers

I recently picked up a 25 round box of 125 gr 357 mag rem golden sabers. I shoot 99 percent reloads in everything. Thought I would get some factory loads if I ever wanted to use my 19-4 for carry or house gun. Tried 5 rounds to try them out. Every one of the cases, the primers were pierced this has never happened before with this pistol . This gun gets shot a lot, it is one of my regulars. I am a federal primer fan, which are allegedly soft. What gives? 34 bucks for 25 rounds, and pierced primers?

My Shield .45 pierces the primers, doesn't matter what brand I'm using. Never had any other pistol or revolver do it, though.

I'm not sure what the problem is? The ammo performs as it should, correct? What difference does it make if the firing pin punches a hole in the primer? The pierced primer doesn't damage the case.

If you're loading your own ammo and using Federal primers, have you ever had a problem with crushed primers?

Is your firing pin ok ?

I don't think that Rem would use a light Federal primer?
Weird?

Any other 357 you can try?

I think I may be confusing here, I am saying I do not get pierced primers with fed primers, which are rumored as soft in this gun. Sorry for the confusion, did not mean to suggest remington used fed primers. Firing pin seems to be fine, shot some of my reloads today, no issues. I have always understood, pierced primers, are a bad thing.

Remington GS in .357 mag with 125gr bullet are loaded to a mid level .357 mag pressure with a velocity of around 1,220 fps from a 4" barrel. Pierced primers are usually the result of over pressure. Check your fired case primers to make sure they are truly pierced and not just a black dent caused by carbon from the firing pin. It is possible that Remington produced some over pressure ammo but not very likely. I have shot Remington GS in both my K frame smiths and have not seen any abnormal primer indicators.

If the primers are truly pierced then do not use this ammo any more. Take a good close up picture of the primer and the box showing the lot number and email Remington to see what their response is as they would not want any over pressure ammo being used by the public.

Thank you Steve, they are pierced, you can feel the hole with a knife blade and see them.

They are. I'd follow up with Remington, as suggested.

Pierced primers are never good. The gas will erode the firing pin, and if the pressure is high enough cause pitting of the breach face. Stop shooting them.

Did you by any chance change or alter the mainspring in your revolver? A lack of sufficient pressure against the primer can lead to cratered or pierced primers at safe pressures.

Carefully check your firing pin to make sure it's not etched by escaping gas and that it's well rounded. That can cause you issues. You also may have a headspace that needs remedial attention. A firing pin hole in the breech face with burrs or worn oversize can also contribute.

In the meantime, do quit using the ammo and take the advice noted above about contacting Remington.

I had the same problem with Remington 158 grain jhp. I called Remington and they exchanged me 125 grain Golden saber. Same problem... If they offer you an exchange, get something with a large primer. Remington small pistol primers have been problematic for me (pierced).
Good luck.

I wouldn't shoot any more of that 357 GS ammo if you are having pierced primers as something is wrong. And since you aren't having the problem with other ammo, I think the problem is with that Remington ammo. And pierced primers will let gas escape that will erode the firing pin bushing.

A few years ago, I had exactly the same problem with Remington UMC 9mm, in the green and white boxes.

I would fire them in a Ruger convertible and get the pierced primers.

A whole litany of ammunition from other company's failed to have a single repeat episode.

This caused me to eliminate the pistol from the equation.

Out of perhaps 100 rounds, I had the primers pierce on perhaps 10 cartridges.

With this, I stopped using this ammunition.

Many years ago I had so many Remington SP primers fail, both in the firing pin impression and around the annulus (outer rim of primer) resulting in both eroded firing pins and hammer nose bushings, that I stopped using Remington SP primers completely. This was some 45 years ago! I would expect that Remington would have taken some action to correct this problem in such a long time, but there are enough posts citing the same issues with even factory Remington ammunition that obviously they have not! My experience was in several calibers from .32 ACP, .32 S&W Long, .38 Special, etc. Pressure is not the cause of primer failure in these calibers. It doesn't cause split cases either!

For the record I will state that I cannot recall experiencing any primer failures, in any caliber, whether handgun or rifle, with any other brand of primers. I have used Winchester, CCI, Federal, RWS, and small amounts of others such as S&B lately. This includes several hundred thousand rounds of re-loaded ammunition over those 45 years.

Remington is the only brand of factory ammunition that I have observed Nickel peeling on new ammunition that has never been out of the box! Something is wrong with their quality control.
