Default Cutting down .44 Mag brass for .44 Spec use

Is there any reason you can't cut down the .44 Mag case length to reload it for .44 Special?

Default cutting down brass.

i don't see any problem cutting 44 mag brass to 44 special length, i have never done that since i have plenty of both. just cut one down and make sure the brass is not to thick, which i don't think it would be.

Unless you have a .44 spl only revolver there is no need to trim down at all. Just load to proper spec. I do use lead for spl and JHP for mag just to keep track.

Doable, but an awful lot of work.

I have done it, not only for .44 Mag but also with a lot of other calibers. I once, not long ago, chopped several hundred .32 Mag cases down to .32 S&W length using a simple jig I fabricated and a Dremel tool with abrasive cutoff disc. It was a little time consuming, but slow is better than not at all. As .44 Special brass is easily obtainable, it's preferable to buy it rather than resorting to chopping .44 Mag cases.

The only issue I would see is you would end up with an incorrect caliber headstamp on the brass. Not unsafe when moving down from magnum to special though.

Most everyone can tell at a glance the length difference between .44 S and .44 M.

Unless you mistakenly load them with 44 mag loads and then try to shoot them in your 44 special. That could be a problem. Not likely, but possible.

Thanks to all. Not planning on doing this as a rule, but have some .44 Mag brass and only shoot .44 Special now in my Bulldog. I'm using .44 Spec brass but only have about 85 pieces so I thought it would be an easy way to come up with the handful of cases I need to make it 100--fits in the plastic boxes. This is pretty much practice ammo.

When I notice I start getting a case mouth split on my 44 mag brass I trim down to 44 spl . I bought the LEE case trimmer and tool to hold case for 44 spl . Just chuck the cutter in my drill and trim . I have cut down almost 50 cases over the years . Yes spl cases are not expensive and available . I did this just because I already had the cases and just didn't want to toss them . It works well . YOu end up with case walls slightly thicker at the case mouth but has never been a problem . I cast and size my 44 bullets .431 . Hope this answers your question .

Most people would gladly trade 44 special brass for 44 magnum cases. Do you have a range you shoot at where you can post a card?
