Do you mean the #3 top break target round or the .38 Special size used in the Outdoorsman and Heavy Duty? They are both called that but are significantly different. The former uses a long case in which the bullet is seated flush. I don't have any of those. The latter, I have some in my cartridge collection somewhere. Some are headstamped .34-44. Some are stamped .38 H.S. (for high speed).

Aside from the early production, most cartridge box labels do not say .38-44. Usually identified as .38 Special Hi-Speed (Remington) or High Velocity (Peters), Super-X (Western), or Super Speed (Winchester). Some early Remington headstamps incorporated the 38-44, e.g. REM-UMC 38-44 SPL later becoming PETERS 38 SPL HV and REM-UMC 38 SPL HS, I don't think Winchester and Western ever used 38-44 on their headstamps, just 38 SPL SUPER-X or SUPER SPEED (or just plain SUPER, e.g W.R.A. SUPER 38 SPL). Note that the revolver is .38/44. The cartridge is always .38-44.
