There has been a "Finders fee" for those for the last seven years.

Good luck.

I tried a few of the ammo search websites with no luck. I guess it is maybe made as a seasonal run the same as the .325 wsm Winchester brass that me and my Dad have also been looking for.

Most of the time, they seem to be in the same aisle as the unicorns. My recollection, which is imprecise, is that they are in fact not run very often. They are a low demand load, like most revolver loads. (I'd love to buy 500 or so myself.)

Best bet would be a gun show, but I'm wagering that they won't be cheap.

I'm on my last box, and probably won't be plinking with them much from here on in!

ST Reloading bullets are like unicorns as well! Found 200 145 gr .357 Silvertip bullets at last Louisville gun show. $33/100. Bought all he had. Vendor says can no longer get them. These will be loaded hot and put on the shelf. Same with 10mm. Bought last 100 of those as well for $40/100.

Back when I had a .357 revolver I looked everywhere for this load. I never found it.

FWIW, I think Buffalo Bore makes an equivalent loading that might be worth looking into.

I seldom shoot factory ammo, but happen to have about two boxes of this loading that I've had for about ten years. What makes it so desirable for shooters? I've fired little of this stuff, certainly not enough to assess the accuracy or lack of it.

I have a couple of boxes which I have had for many years. I have heard that it is a very good load for a 357 but it is so rare to find anymore I don't know if it's really relevant as there are other 357 loads that seem to be as well thought of. The Silvertip has had a good reputation for stops but it really is "old technology" in-so-far as it had been replaced by the SXT loadings from Winchester.

Gun shows would be my best guess, and that's going to be the proverbial shot in the dark. I've been hoarding my remaining 70 or so rounds for a rainy day for quite some time now and I despair of ever finding any more, though I do keep looking. I don't know of any "anti-personnel" .357 load I would rather have, but there might be better loads if deep penetration is likely to be needed. Good luck with your search. You're going to need it.

I'd guess you could easily get 50 to 75 bucks a box at a gunshow.

The silvertip loads are now mostly collector's items.
Best to find a more modern ammo you like.

I have been told by Winchester they do a run about every two years. They are due to do a run very soon according to that.

What I do when I need more, I set an email reminder at several of my favorite online ammo sources so when they do come back into stock I get an email. I then stock up with what I can afford.

Over the years the price has been between $48 and $52 for a 50 round box. I have not seen them higher.

One of my revolvers just loves that ammo and is scary accurate when shooting it, a S&W M640.

It's hard to believe there are not at least a few factory ammos (or handloads) that will perform at least as well as 145 Silvertips.

Of course there are but guys like to collect neat-o original factory ammo, hence a lot of the interest. Black Talons, Silvertips, Super Vel, etc., stuff like that is always going to demand a premium in pricing.

They look pretty sweet in felons in the morgue, too. I had a detective check Dallas area PD and FBI shootings with this load. He said it was VERY effective.

That beats gelatin block tests...and this ammo gives about 1200 FPS in a three-inch .357, a good result for the bullet weight and effectiveness.

I use it mainly from four-inch barrels, but someone with a three-inch should like that data.

It was tied with the Remington 125 grain JHP.

But those 125 grain loads are very abusive to both gun and shooter

They are a prime cause of cracked barrel throats in K-framed .357's.

I was told that by S&W factory reps, not in an Internet post by Lord knows who...

About ten years ago, I could Silvertips everwhere. It is one of my favorite .357 loads, and I hear it is a a good load in 10mm as well. I understand it is older technology, but I liked the 140-145 grain .357, so perhaps the could make the new hollow points in this weight. Everything is either 125 grain or sometimes 158. I fell 140-145 was good medium and shot well in my Model 19 Combat Magnum. I think Hornady also makes both a 135 and 140 grain .357 - this could be a good alternative to the Silvertip.

Someone probably does, but if Winchester is planning to run another batch soon I will just wait for them. I like them, they are very accurate and consistent in my guns, and recoil is not abusive. If Winchester is listening, I'm good for two or three boxes.

As I mentioned before, Buffalo Bore has ammo that seems to perform about the same as the STHP, at least in terms of bullet weight and velocity. Expensive, but might be worth checking out.

Well, I wish Winchester would get with it. I'm down to my last 2 speed loaders of Silvertips and they are 30 years old. My .357s are S&W N frames and a Colt MK III, so not too worried about the throat cracking business, but I do like a 140-145 gr. HP.

Well I have many Winchester Silver Tips in factory loads and hand loads.
Factory loads: .357 Mag = 500, hand loads = 1500
Factory loads: .44 Mag = 400, hand loads = 1000
Factory loads: .41 Mag = 300, hand loads = 600
Factory loads: .45 Colt = 300, hand loads = 500

I got a catalog from Natchez today and they are listing .357 ST's in stock. In fact, they have several calibers including .41.

The Natchez catalog always shows hard-to-find stuff they don't have. Guess it's a good way to get customers to contact them.

I guess I am the only one responding so far that has actually used Silvertips on game. I used the older 185 grain Silvertips in 45 ACP caliber to take a doe antelope. It took 8 shots to get her into the freezer. Most shots were at close range. I recovered 5 of the spent bullets from the little prairie goat. Very little shock value but the bullets look beautiful with excellent expansion.

I apologize if I have led anyone astray. I have not read one of the Natchez catalogs for some time. When I got the one today. I had time on my hands and saw the ad for Silvertips. Again, I am sorry.

Now, that's the kind of post we need to see in this forum! Thanks!

Would have helped if you'd mentioned where the bullets struck, what part of the pronghorn. And the range.

I will dig out the bullets from my collection of game killed projectiles and read the notes I made. On every animal I take I write down the date, kind and size of animal, distance, what caliber, what gun, what bullet, where the bullets impacted, was the bullet recovered and if so how many inches of penetration and retained weight, and condition of animal when I got to it. This goat was taken in the 70's and IIRC there was so many holes in it that I just lumped the bullets together as I was unable to track down the individual wound channels to individual bullets. The last shot was the coup de gras and was taken at about 10' and was a broadside neck shot. I remember clearly the huge plume of hair in the air from the shot and the expression on her face at the shot. She just stared and then laid over. Virtually no reaction to the shot.

I just checked my notes and the recovered bullets. I shot 8 times hit her 7. I can find 4 of the recovered slugs. This was in 1980 so my memory is fading. The range was 20 yards for first shot which broke her front leg low. She stopped and I put 2 in her lungs. She ran @50 yards and laid down like a camel rests. I approached and she tried to regain her footing. Several shots later she laid over and I put a finishing shot in her head. The antelope weighed @100# live weight. All bullets recovered weighted between 179 and 183 grains. Some jacket separation. If I knew how to post photos I would. e I cae e

Not to gloat (too much) but I found several boxes of the 145gr for $27.95/50 in Salt Lake City today. I honestly thought the packaging was a throw back but when I looked at the font it seemed original. Does anyone have any production dates or know when they were discontinued? I'm interested to find out.

Two years ago at the Big Reno Show, I spotted a box of 145 gr 357 Silver Tips on a table; the box appeared new and unmolested, wearing a $20 price tag. Before I could blink the transaction was over and I walked away with a smile. It wasn't until months later that I opened the box and found the ammo within was Remington 158 gr SJHP. Still a good deal, but...! caveat emptor

I'm glad it's available on lots of sites. I scored some from Midway, free shipping tonight with order over $49 and doubled up with birthday discount on some Superformance for my 270 and Buffalo Bore FBI load for just over $25. I'm weak, saving $4 and change on Buffalo Bore made me buy it to satisfy my curiosity about that round.

That is the packaging they were in during the mid 1990s.
