Default Wet Ammo-Dumb Mistake

Being that we don't have a stupid section I'll just post here in the Ammo category. My wife was unloading the washing machine when she asked me what this was in my shorts pocket. To my embarrassment it was a speed strip loaded with 5 Speer 235gr Gold Dot. Of course I pulled them out of service, but now my question is will they shoot? I've never done this before in over 55 years of shooting. Anyone ever have the pleasure of this experience? I'll know the answer as soon as I get to the range.

Been there done that with so many speedstrips I can't even count I just put it aside and shoot at the range. Never had a failure to fire.

Yeah, they'll shoot. I have shot ammo that set submerged for several days. It all went bang. I think you are wise not to use it for carry ammo, though. Just shoot it next time you're at the range.

My guess would be that they will fire.

My brother picked up some surplus military .308 ammo cheap that appeared to have been under water at one time. The boxes were water stained and deteriorated and the ammo itself was tarnished and nasty looking. Everyone of them fired.

I would think that the bullet and primer fit so tightly in the case that even without any kind of sealer, ammo is pretty much water proof. Watched a You Tube video of some guys salvaging artillery ammo off a ship sunk in WW2. They were popping out the projectiles and salvaging the brass cases. Even after sitting in the ocean for 60+ years the powder was still dry.

I waded through more water in Nam than I care to remember. Wet ammo was routine. Never had a failure to fire. Shoot away.

We DO have a stupid section. It's called "The Lounge"
Cartridges are pretty waterproof these days. I routinely shoot shotgun shells that have been under water for a while. I do draw the line however on shooting anything that has rust all over it. Green is OK - that can be wiped off

I would bet money it will fire...factory ammo is more waterproof than you would think. Military ammo is made waterproof .
Use it for practice , just in case .
I've washed a lot of stuff myself...things crawl back into the pockets when you aren't looking !

Thumbs up JOIN THE CLUB

If running ammo thru the washer/dryer makes you stupid, you have plenty of company. Mine were simple plinking wad cutters & you couldn't tell a difference between them & the not laundered ones.

Default Probably.......Maybe?

Metallic cartridges have two metal-to-metal interference fit sealing surfaces between soft metals. A static seal like this will keep out low pressure water intrusion 999 times out of 1,000, particularly if sitting still and not agitated. On the other hand, you have banged them around in an aqueous solution with a surfactant (laundry detergent) that lowers the surface tension of the solution making it more penetrating of any crevice. Your odds have decreased to 998 times out of 1,000.

Default Washed and dried

I washed and dried some 9mm along with my very expensive hearing aids. The gun went bang and my hearing is the same. It's been two years and the hearing aids still work. Stupid is as stupid does.

Well that is good to hear. It's not that I intend to wash my ammo, but I di inadvertently manage to forget to remove my hearing aids when I shower. I usually realize it when I apply shampoo to my little remaining hair. Then I panick and toss them onto the bath mat.

I would really hate to have to buy new ones because my kids will not let me sell my grandkids to pay for them.

Didn't the laundered ones make cleaner holes?

Some of our members acquired ammo after Katrina that had been submerged and if I remember correctly, it worked fine.
