Default Man Kills 820 Pound Hog with a .38

Guess somebody forgot to tell the hog that a .38 is an obsolete defense cartridge!

Feral hogs are apparently thriving in Alabama. The old adage that shot placement is everything must have been proven in this case. However, if that hog was charging rather than "presenting" for the shot, results might have been very different.

I agree it's easier to make the shot from the safety of your porch, and a charging boat would likely have had a different impact. Then again, hitting a charging boar and dropping it with any handgun is gonna be a challenge.

Well never know the load. But it's a .38. Can't see a guy leaving 180 grain Buffalo Bore ammo for a home defense gun.

Most hogs that I have seen shot were shot with a 22 LR rifle.
No, I don't recall what kind of ammo was used!
Probably whatever was sold at the local country general store.

He says in the article that, "it took three shots to take the hog down before it hit the ground." And that the hog was about 12 yds away. I'm thinking he was using a 2" J frame or 4 inch revolver.

I would think a 4" barrel. But a taxidermist living in Alabama and talking about the meat not being good enough to eat must have other guns at home and is probably a hunter. Just probablty grabbed his nightstand gun rather than get something bigger from the safe.

Go visit a hog farm sometime. I suspect the average boar hog probably weighs 1200 lb +. Most of the ones I've seen would be that big, and they tend to be pretty ill tempered. Breeding sows, sometimes called sausage sows, will often exceed 600 lb.

When will the feral hogs hit the northeast?

I love porkchops, ribs, porkroasts, anything from the pig. Eatable.

You just don't know us backwoods Alabamians.
The fine 'wine' is in the safe, the 'grabbing' stuff is leaning in the door corners...

There's some crazies down here that hunt hogs with bows and arrows.

I use my Sport II and carry my Shield 9mm in my OWB holster fully uncovered. When my B.I.L. comes along, I let him use the 30-30. My property is field with a large area of heavy brush and trees. It's been too hot and dry here. They're probably staying near the creek about a mile away. Rattle snakes have been out at night since the heats been up though. Too hot during the day even for them.

Generally Hogs that size are a mix if you will of a domestic Hog that went feral and a wild Hog that bred with it. Not in all cases but in many. For anyone in that Ne that desires these critters in your area to hunt. Be careful what you wish for as they are not native, eat virtually anything and anything and are a blight on the environment.
