Default .44 Magnum Ammo

Recommended brand(s) and/or loads that don't shoot quite as hot? Thank you.

Default .44 Magnum Ammo

If I understand your question correctly, 240 grain

Mag Tech L224 SJSP

PMC TCSP

Federal JHP

I like the Atlanta Ammo FMJ but they're reloads and the company has been sold. The above are available from Cabela's, Bud's Gun Shop (Louisville, KY) and Brownell's.

Agreed. If you like to shoot 44 Magnum, get into reloading. Trust me.

It works the other way too. If I didn't reload, I wouldn't own any 41 Magnums.

If you don't reload , there's nothing wrong with the 44 special .
At one time the accuracy of the 44 special made it a top target shooting caliber in S&W revolvers .

You can make the 44 mag recoil like a 22 mag.

All of the brand names are pretty good. I stick to brass cased though. Here's some good stuff.

Georgia Arms loads some good stuff with various loads in .44 Mag. NOT to be confused with NORTH GA RELOADING (which is junk).

Magtech with hollow points are a handful!! try looking for some cowboy rounds or anything in 44 special. Any lead round nose bullet is going to be very tame in spl or mag.

I've always read/heard/experienced factory ammo is loaded to near max. pressures, velocity. If you're looking for "light" fun loads, just try some .44 Specials and clean the cylinder after use...

If you are looking for some 44 Mag ammo that isn't as hot as the full bore stuff and is reasonably priced to boot, try some of the 240 grain RNFP plated bullets that Freedom Munitions sells. They use the Extreme brand plated bullets and I believe the companies are related. I have shot them and there were no problems with their ammo with either myself or my brother. They are stouter than 44 Specials but not near as hot as some 44 Mag ammo I've shot and loaded.

Here is a link to the 44 Mag page at Freedom Munitions for you to check out what they are selling: <<<LINK>>>

Long shot, but the major mfgrs (CCI- Blazer, R-P, W-W) produced medium .44 loads in the 80s: 240gr lead at 900-950fps. There might be a few boxes on an ammo table at a show.

The first box of 44 mag ammo I ever bought was some Armscor 240gr cowboy loads. Not nearly as hot as alot of magnum ammo I've shot since. Decent price too.
