Default S&W 460 Practice Ammo

Just purchased a S&W 460 with 8 3/8" barrel and now looking for some good practice ammo to become familiar with the gun and trigger. As it shoots 45 colt would I be correct the 45 ammo would be the least expensive practice/plinking option? I've been looking at various 460 ammo and the cheapest I've seen is Hornday's 200 FTX round at $30 plus for a box of 20. I am a reloader of 44 magnum (S&W PC 629) and 45 ACP &
9mm. I could purchase dies, brass, bullets etc. for the 460 however I'm not certain at this point I will be shooting it that much to warrant starting to reload for it. I will be using my 44 mag for deer hunting so I doubt I would use the 460 for that.

Thanks!

I suggest buying the reloading equipment for it...you can save thousands per year...depending how much you shoot...its the sole reason I started reloading my own...my S&W 500 was expensive to feed.

The 460 S&W is pretty expensive to reload. You may want to get a copy Lyman 50th edition. It has two loads for cast 255 & 300 lead cast gas check bullets. Now as for the price of lead and checks with powder....!

Since you said you would not be shooting that much..............
you can buy 45 colt to practice and the high $$ for full loads.

If you think you want to shoot that monster more........................
then reloading can give you powder puff to full loads at 30% less the cost or more.

Sort of like the .357 and 44 mag.

I've quickly discovered this revolver is a blast (pun intended) to shoot! I've gone through my first box of Hornady 200 FTX ammo and found it pleasant and great fun to shoot. I have decided to start reloading for it using RCBS reloading dies, Starline brass, Hornady 240 grain XTP Mag bullets and H110 powder. I am really looking forward to shooting this 460!!

Buy the dies and 100 cases. Load up some cast bullet rounds and you will quickly save enough to cover the components.

Midway USA has Lee 460 dies for $32.99 and a sale on RCBS dies for $44.99. 100 pieces or brand new Starline brass will cost you $64.

Most 460 ammo on the Net is over $50/20 rounds, load 100 rounds and you will be ahead. Quick calc tells me 100 rounds loaded to 454 Casull pressures will cost you about $32 to load.

Glad you hear you enjoy that 460!! I have the same wheel gun and load the 200gr hornady's to about 220fps! 51gr's of H110 is a nice solid load. Pick up the new Hornady reloading manual for their bullets, more load data than what is in the Lyman book plus the are specific to the Hornady bullets!

I mostly load and shoot 454 Casulls out of mine 250 Gr. bullet and 32Gr. of H110. Right between the too soft 45 colt (in that gun) and some of the holy... 460 rounds.
