Default Old ammo value?

A neighbor had some old ammo sitting out at a yard sale. Several boxes of .22 Shorts, a box each of .38 Super & .38 a.c.p., a box of ancient 12 gauge,

I offered him $4.00 a box for the Shorts, but he seems to think they are worth twice that due to their age. I figured .22 LR is $8.00-$9.00 per hundred, so fifty rounds is 1/2 price. Am I off the price?

I don't think so. .22 ammo around here is going anywhere from 7 cents to 10 cents a round. I'd offer a nickel a round. If anything, you could make the argument that the older ammunition is less valuable because of the chance to degrade due to improper storage, but in reality, it'll probably shoot like brand new. There's probably a little collector value in the old boxes, but everything you have there was pretty common back in the day. I've got a little of everything you have pictured, and it's in line to shoot just like the rest . . .

Well, it appears there are folks who collect this older stuff and pay more than I offered. I would also shoot it, so maybe he can find a high dollar buyer before he moves Wednesday. Thanks to all who replied here and by P.M. Here is 750 rounds of .357 Remington Max I found him a buyer for.

As you know, shorts are harder to come by, especially vintage ones, his bring $8-10 per 50 rnd box.

The problem with collectible ammo is in finding a collector who wants it.

^^^^what he said. Or, for that matter, finding a collector for anything who will give you your price.

During the Obummer administration people were going to cartridge shows across the country to buy collectable .22 ammo as shooting fodder!

I'd hold onto all .22 boxes that don't have the child warnings on them and any strange brands and foreign brands. One never knows what may become collectable in years to come.

The boxes in your photos are in pretty good shape. $8 bucks a box for filled "collectible ammo" in great shape is not outrageous. I assume you want it to display - not to shoot. Just shoot new stuff and put this on a shelf.

Not only will you get some nostalgic ammo but you won't piss of your neighbor either if he gets the $8/box. Offer him a "package deal" -

I've run into some older shooters at our Club Range that brought down .22 Bricks and mint Factory boxes of all types and calibers just to shoot. I said if you are going to just shoot this would you mind swapping out with me for my currently made ammo? They were happy to do so and so I've got a nice little collection of vintage ammo - some goes back to the 1920's I don't shoot most of it however I do hunt with 50 - 70 year old 12 Gauge Shot Shells because I had so many of them it was silly not too. The Pheasants never knew the difference and all worked just fine (including the cardboard hull shells). I'm saving the best of the boxes for display.
