Ammo Shortage Done?
Cabelas sent me a $20 off coupon so I stopped in to pick up a couple of boxes of .44special for my new to me model 69. I will be ordering some bulk ammo online but wanted some to shoot this weekend and figured with the $20 off the prices wouldn't be too bad.
Man were the shelves stocked, in all handgun calibers. It was at typical Cabelas high prices, but it was nice to see the availability. Hopefully prices will start to drop a little too.

Where have you been? There's been rebates from Remington and Federal for their ammo. Rebates from SW, Walther, SA, and others for their guns.... Prices on everything has generally dropped. I don't shop in Cabela's, Gander Mountain, Bass Pro or any other corporate store. They're overpriced and too far away

Even though the ammo shortage appears to have gone away, I am still keeping my stock up by replacing what I shoot each time. I learned the hard way 4½ years ago after Sandy Hook when virtually all common ammo became hard to find or nearly doubled in price.
I'll be prepared for when, not if, the next shortage comes along. Now is the time to stock up and keep it up.

I'll agree that shelves are filling back up. Even WalMart has .22LR these days. (But my Perfecta vanished, as they don't have to work so hard to find ammo with a higher profit margin, I suspect).
But one event could change all that in a matter of hours. Looking back to Sandy Hook, a friend had an order pending with a company most of us refuse to deal with. They altered the already-accepted order to raise the price dramatically without giving him a chance to cancel / accept.
The next shortage is lurking out there.

If people don't buy everything on the shelves just to hoard, the prices will start to drop. Dealers can't afford to have all that ammo sitting on the shelf, then the sales will show up and they will realize they will have have to price them right if they want to sell them.
Just hold off buying everything in sight because you are afraid of the next election.

I'll consider it over when my local Walmart has it in stock. It hasn't had any in stock except mini-mags in about 2 years. Dicks and BassPro has it but not Walmart.

Went to Walmart yesterday for motor oil and a filter, the ammo case was stocked full, all the gun shops are loaded also . There is even a great supply of reloading components. The problem seems to be they are all at shortage pricing. I'll wait till they come down or I'll just keep buying on line when I get a better deal. I like to shop local, but i'm not gonna pay outrageous prices.

The ammo shortage was because of the hoarders, and nothing else. That was disgusting, but I did get an opportunity to get rid of some of my excess at a nice profit.

The ammo shortage has been done for at least a year. Insanely low prices have been offered with a lot of different rebates this year.
Currently 9mm brass case Federal can be had for $0.14 shipped per round after rebate. I would say the shortage is well over

In east central Kansas we have a decent supply of most centerfire rifle and pistol ammo but still have very limited .22LR ammunition.

Why would I want to check out a place that won't sell ammo?
(at least that's what I think I read . . .)
Ammo shortage is over here. Everybody has plenty and prices aren't bad . . .

Common/high production quantity ammo (9 mm, 5.56 mm) is plentiful and back to near pre-2008 prices. There is more .22 LR but it is still relatively expensive prior to the shortages, and even the lower quantity rounds are back at fairly decent prices. All in all, good news for shooters.

My local Walmart, which hasn't had .22 ammo in years, was running over with it last week. No mini mags, but lots of bulk pack choices. Didn't buy any, as I probably have a couple of years supply on hand.

I just bought Federal 22lr at a gunshow (NY),,sealed bricks/500 for $25,,marked down from $35.
Many still had bricks of 22's at prices anywhere from $45 to $55.
$35 was a common price.
9mm was around $12/box 50.
I still pick up a brick or two of 22's when I see them for $25 or less. They don't take up much room.

It ain't over until I can walk into my local dealers and buy everything off the shelf at a reasonable price including unlimited amounts of 22 LR.
I don't do rebates or mail order, too darn old to change my buying habits. That includes guns also. I want to eyeball it and handle it before buying. Daddy said only fools buy a pig in a poke!

Yep Wally's shelves are full with any caliber wanted and the prices have come down a little bit.
When I first got my 44 spl I only found the ammo at once upon a time Gander Mountain for $48. I bought reloading dies after that.

Ammo shortage is over here. Everybody has plenty and prices aren't bad the reason I put that on there was he was referring to high cost, sg ammo has always been the cheapest and well stocked dist I found.

For fear of another shortage, I suspect shooting enthusiasts have stocked up on ammo and supplies to the point there is now a significant drop in such sales. Yes, ammo and supplies are on the shelves and have been for some months now. It sure is good to my soul to see them there.

.22 LR in bulk packs - at or about 3 cents/round.
9 mm (ditto) - 12 - 14 cents/round.
Current prices are not too far off with careful shopping, rebates, going to store grand openings .

The local Dunham's sporting goods store at any given time would have had one or more of the bulk pack brands on sale for $16/500. That would have included the better stuff like Blazers or Federal.

Got Federal .22lr 36gr 550 value box at local Walmart for about 4cents a round yesterday. Even gunbot doesn't show anyone selling for that price.

The new reality is that ammo has become a commodity just like oil. And like oil, it is subject to market forces driving it up and down in price and availability. Right now, there is a glut and the political landscape is such that it is unlikely we will see regulation that will restrict access. So, ammo and reloading components are readily available and the price is stable. Where I live, I can get just about anything. CCI standard velocity, when I could get it, was between $55 and $75 a brick about 18 months ago. Now the LGS have it on the shelf at around $35. Who knows what the future holds. Some country might start buying up lead at high prices making that ammo scarce and expensive again. The antis might get a foothold on the Government changing regulations and making ammo harder to get and more expensive. Unlike oil, we can keep a store of ammo to hedge against the market. I'm not saying to panic buy the stuff like what we just went through, but a smart person who likes to shoot should be taking advantage of our present situation and stocking up for when the market changes. And, it will certainly change.

Bruce,
.22 RF should bust loose up your way shortly. The Walmart in Sierra Vista has a ton of it right now. Maybe our Cochise County hoarders now finally have all they desire. Prior to the last 6 months or so, I have not been able to buy any .22 RF there. Occasionally found some at CalRanch store. Didn't pay attention to centerfire since my duty ammo is provided and I shoot handloads in all of my personal weapons.

A Family member gave me a $25 gift card for Bass Pro.
Only problem, the closest one is across the boarded and near Sacramento.
So I called them up on how to use it per the inter net. They said
that any purchase over $35.00..........ships free. For anything
under that there is a $5 shipping fee.
They sort of have me over a barrel.
Looks like I have a $20 gift card, instead. Bummer.
Maybe I will send it to a out of state in-law for Christmas? ...... stamps cost under 50 cents.
Just hate to see them get a free $5 on their card sales.

Or, the way I usually think, you have the opportunity to purchase a $35 item for $10 . . .

I am not sure there ever was a REAL shortage. There was a lot of hording, at all levels. Consumers bought all they could, even more than they thought they would ever need. Suppliers limited the amounts available for purchase, when they could and Distributers sat on inventory until people were willing to pay any price to get it. Sometimes we are our own worst enemy.

ammo shortage
Yes the hoarders certainly put a serious crimp on my reloading a few years back. Took me 8 months to get small pistol primers. Had to load every thing with mag primers.
Nice to see powder and primers on the shelves again. I see locally the price for 1# kegs have dropped $2 to $3.00.
Be interesting to see if the new Ca ammo laws will have an effect.
I imagine millions of californians are scooping up as much ammo as they can get their hands on before next January

I agree with this. All of the sudden, # of rounds fired on any given day didn't suddenly go up 5fold. It wasn't a consumption issue.

I doubt distributors sat on inventory waiting for prices to rise. They are in business to sell merchandise and sitting on inventory is a gamble when money would be better spent on acquiring more inventory.

Can always hang on to the card for a bit, most retailers tend to lower shipping limits as we get closer to the holidays. As noted earlier, add something else now to hit the free ship. Or even check the BP site and see if the same gift card works at Cabelas yet (if they'd have a store or ship special that works for ya)
