Old 45-70 collector value
I guess this is where the question goes.
I have 2 boxes sealed and unopened of 45-70 ammo. 20 rounds to a box. The boxes are taped with strings and open like a band aid.
They are stamped on the box " repacked at the Frankford Arsenal 1895, so I might guess that originally they were from the 1870's.
Any idea on a value and how collectible they are?
Thanks

Desirable by anyone with an old 45-70 rifle. An online auction would provide your value answer.Anything else is just guessing.

Your best answer would be found on the forum at the International Ammunition Association site, which is where all the ammo collectors hang out. My guess would be around $300-$500 per box depending upon condition. But that is a guess. Pictures are essential.

My father and I shot this stuff in the 50's. Five cents a round.

The value is not in the individual rounds of old .45-70 ammunition (they are fairly common) but as a sealed box full of them in high condition.

I have almost two box’s of the 45-70,16 405 grain black powder and 15 500 grains smokeless. I have started to use them every year deer hunting. It’s kind of fun telling people you killed that buck with a 100 year bullet.
They had been opened when I found them at a yard sale for $25.00 bucks each.

Condition is the key. If the boxes are really minty - $400-$500. if they are somewhat scuffed or show storage handling - $250, or so. Ed.
