What should I do with spent .38 Spl cases
Usually I try to save my spent brass .38 SPL cases
I do not reload, and do not plan on starting
Should I bother saving it?
Is it worth more putting it back onto the boxes or sold in a bag?
How much is it worth?
Not looking for offers

4 to 6 cents a round seems to be the going rate for uncleaned once fired 38 special brass in my area these days. Most sell it in ziplocks 100-200 rounds per quart bag.

There will always be someone who reloads and wants fired brass. I have a several lifetimes supply of brass in almost every caliber just from range pickups and friends giving it to me. Please don't throw it away.
At gun shows, .38 Special brass will sell in ziplock Baggies of 100 for for 5 to 10 cents each. It's often been cleaned. Ditto for 9mm.

I prefer to save boxes and box inserts because that's how I store my ammo. Being a revolver round, it's easy to retain just about 100% of what you shoot and it takes pretty much no effort to collect casing vs autos.
I would save up enough for a medium flat rate box and sell it in the classifieds, although it would save some postage if you could sell it locally.

I'm down to about 10,000 rounds or so, could probably use some more to occupy my time during evenings when the TV offers nothing worth watching (like EVERY DAY). Send your brass over here and save me from network television! Give my time some meaning! Help me feel good about myself!
What do people who don't reload do with their free time anyway? Just curious.

Do a karma!
There are folks who have asked for my brass, but I've not had the motivation to sort it out. But I hope I will, as it is stacked in boxes on the garage steps, and needs to go!!

Ill gladly take it! Do a Karma thread. Ask for takers and set an end date. Randomly pick the winner and I’m sure he or she would be happy to pay postage. I known I would!

I would suggest you consider reloading. As for why, some simple facts. A 124 grain .375 diameter plated bullet costs the same as a 125 grain plated 9mm bullet. The 38 special uses the very same primer as a 9mm. The cases for 38 special cost is the original cartridge cost divided by the number of reload cycles and since the 38 special operates at a much lower pressure the cases last much longer than 9mm cases. The 38 special does use a bit more powder per charge than 9mm, at a guess about 25-30% but we are talking around 2 1/2 to 3 cents per charge so the cost difference won't break the bank.
End result is that the cost to load 38 special is just about the same as the cost to load the 9mm. Now, next time you are shopping for ammo compare the cost of a box of 9mm to the cost of a box of 38 special. Now you will understand why you should save your brass and take up reloading at some point.
PS; the ammo companies aren't actually "ripping you off" with the high cost they charge for 38 special. What they are charging you for is the cost of changing a production line over from something like the 9mm to 38 special for a short production run. Was a time when the 38 special was the most used ammunition on the planet but those days have passed and it's now the 9mm that has the highest volume in sales. So when you pay more than double for 38 special it is because today this caliber is nearly a "boutique" ammunition.

I would start reloading all that brass. What ever you do don’t throw it away. If not sell it or give it to a reloaded that loves S&W revolvers, hum OK someone like me ... LOL
The above post has excellent info and is accurate as far as costs. Also, reloading is free and therapeutic. You have to focus enough not to screw up but not think hard enough for it to be work.

Comparison with .38 S&W or .32-20 would be even more appropriate.

One time fired brass in the original box should go for $3.00 or more.
It is nice to know that there is not mixed cases in a box and that
they will shoot the same, plus it is great to have the box !!
Do I hear $3.50 ?

By all means save it,you never know you might wind up a handloader and you will have a supply. Now if you absolutely know you will not handload think about giving them to a shooting buddy. I do handload but will never handload the .223 Rem for reasons of my own and my shooting buddy Big Fred who is a forum member just loves it when I bring a .223 Rem to shoot. He does handload the .223 Rem!

For home circumstances and medical issues I can't be a reloader, and no, I don't save boxes, as there is no space for them. Brass goes in a ziplock bag and gets thrown in a bigger box. Will be luck of the draw!

Do you shoot enough to accumulate enough brass to worry about? If you do put it back in boxes and take to a show. I'm
sure someone would cut you a deal trading 1x brass for a box
of 38sp. I load many cartridges but not all. I don't throw any
brass away. If I have absolutely no use for it I trade or sell it.
I have taken brass as payment on a box of ammo many times.

Drink. Another argument for reloading. I'll have to get back to it.

What you can do with your spent 38 special brass is one of two things..
1. You can ship them to me..... OR
2. Take advantage of the brass buyback program from Freedom munitions. They will give you I think $1.40 credit per pound of brass towards your order. 1st time customers get free shipping!

You could easily sell it here for $0.10 a round.

Go out with full brass and make it empty. Somebody has got to do it.

About $2 a pound at local scrap yard... where all my worn out brass and dented range pick up goes.

You could put it in my garage with my brass.
I think I still have a 50 cal can half full of once fired GI 38 brass.
