I get full nutritional info on a 50¢ bag of potato chips, not on a $25 box of ammo.
I get complete nutritional information on a 50¢ bag of potato chips. How about on a $25 box of ammo?
Caliber, bullet weight, bullet style. Just great. Sometimes, muzzle velocity is printed, too. Even less frequently, muzzle energy is printed, too. Ok/fine. How about on all boxes of ammo? That would be a nice touch. Is there enough room on the box to show all of the info mentioned above, plus the length of the barrel that yields these specs? And if it was a test barrel, indicate if the barrel was vented, if they are revolver rounds?
How about............... wait for it................ Gasp! Pressure in psi or cup printed on the box of ammo?
Next, what if new firearms contained info in the user manual about maximum pressure in psi or cup for two scenarios: Frequent firing many rounds over a long period of years, and max pressure if the firearm will be used seldom, such as discharge only in self defense?
Gosh, if this were happening, there would not be so many firearms enthusiasts walking around with a cloud of question marks swirling around their heads.

If enough people cared to make it an issue and voted with their dollars, the makers would do it. (Federal law requires nutritional information - I don't see that ever happening for ammo.)

Velocity and energy varies by gun barrel length.

There must be a powerful chronograph makers lobby that is keeping all that info hidden.

I worked part time in a large LGS for about 12 years..
The majority of folks wouldn't know what the information meant if it was printed on the box..
Don't know how many times I was told by a customer that the 125 grain .357 , had less power than the 158 grains of powder .357..
Or when they would ask for ammo for their .44 magnum. And I would get a box ammo marked .44 Rem. Mag. .. And they would say, But I don't have a Remington I have a S&W..
Or when the customer wanted 9x18 Makrovo High Power ammo. He told me there were two different loads
for the 9x18 .. The Regular ammo and the High Power ammo. I asked really ? ,, he said the High Power ammo had it printed right on the box,,, 9x18 HP..
Then you get into shotshells and Dram Eq. ??

I'd be willing to bet that those of us that really want to know have done the research ourselves and have already found out the information we want.

Good point and to take it one step further, most folks who REALLY seek that kind of info tend to roll their own ammo.

All that information on food comes from government regulations. I can not see any good coming from inflicting that on ammo. The one side effect would be a new way to categorize and potentially restrict ammo supplies.

I'd have to agree with what old&slow said. The extra info would confuse the heck out of most people. I've run into plenty of people looking at a 45 Colt ammo and 45 ACP ammo trying to figure out which one they need to buy. I've had people try and sell me ammo at the range because they bought the wrong stuff - 357 Sig instead of 357 Mag.
I'd be willing to bet any government mandated signage on ammo would be something similar to what's a cigarettes.
Anyone interested enough can view any of the 100's of ammo tests online. Luckygunner has a pretty good comparison of a large variety of common handgun rounds. A chronograph will also tell you velocity out of your gun which is all that matters.

Maybe if you were eating the ammo, the labels would be the same . . .

Most old ammo had fps data and even pressure for a standard weapon.
Do you really think that todays ammo makers want you to really know...............
what the reduced fps on ammo is, that they are making you buy now, with the higher prices ?? !!
They said, I thought, would you believe........ ?
Good luck finding the fps printed on todays ammo........
let alone the PSI.
(except BB ammo)

What might be easier would be to establish a standard for testing Pistol ammo (revolver/semi auto), Rifle ammo, etc then everyone would know.

I'm thinking along the lines of hoc9sw in that can't you see it coming? Nancy P or Sen. Fein... or one of "those types" standing up holding a small pellet and a Crossman air rifle and shouting out: "See this thing that is basically a training weapon for youngsters? LOOK closely at this dangerous projectile...see the rating on the tin can of 300 feet per second....that equals 204 miles per hour...why do you think we have speed limits for cars on the nations highways a lot lower than that? I ask you to side with us in regulating ANY projectile that has a printed velocity rating greater than 150 mph or in those "gun wacko" terms...220 feet per second! After all our nations children's lives are at stake! I am sure everyone has seen the results of Ralphie almost shooting his eye out on Christmas Day some time ago. Maybe we are being to accommodating with the 150 mph...let us tie this regulation to Federal speed limits..70 mph equals 102 feet per second....should be good enough for everyone. The ONLY exceptions (exemptions in political parlay) will be ammo makers who have discreetly contributed to my colleagues campaign funds!"
All above tongue in cheek but you never really know in today's world.

Would give some dick w*d a reason to sue the ammo maker when a load crono'd up 10 fps short of what they published on the box or a bullet was .1 grain off from the published value.

I saw all that Nutritional Information printed on the side of a Twinkie package...and thought how funny and useless that was...
If I gave a rats behind abou nutrition....I wouldn't be eating Twinkie's !
Besides all those numbers don't mean doodly squat to me.... I'm a Twinkie addict .
I have a feeling 98% of the shooting public would have no use at all for any more information than what's on a box of ammo right now.

I THINK THAT'S THE KEY, Erich. EVEN ON A FORUM LIKE OURS, NOT ALL OF US ARE CONCERNED WITH THE TYPE OF DATA, LISTED IN THE ORIGINAL POST. NOT ALL OF US OWN A CHRONOGRAPH---EVEN THOSE OF US THAT RELOAD......
IMHO, THE VAST MAJORITY OF PEOPLE BUYING AMMO, GIVE A CURSORY GLANCE TO THE BRAND OF AMMO, CALIBER, TYPE OF BULLET, AND WEIGHT---END OF STORY. IF THEY COMPARE 2 OR 3 BOXES OF AMMO, ALONG THOSE SIMPLE PARAMETERS, THEY DESERVE A CERTAIN DEGREE OF CREDIT, FOR DOING A BIT OF "RESEARCH"......
I FIND THAT THE RELATIVE COST OF THE AMMO, IS A MAJOR FACTOR, IN PROMOTING SALES. AMMO MAKERS ARE AWARE OF THIS. IF PRINTING ALL OF THIS INFO ON A BOX IS COST PROHIBITIVE, A SIMPLE ONE LINE DIRECTIVE TO A WEBSITE, COULD BRING INTERESTED PARTIES, TO A RESOURCE, WHERE ALL OF THAT DATA, COULD BE ACCESSED......

I think the nutritional value of ammo is probably experienced by whichever animals you shoot with it.

I know that those big blueberry muffins that Sam's sells are 800 calories in ONE muffin. I don't care how much info you put on a box of ammunition besides caliber and bullet weight, I still will not buy it. I reload all my ammo except 22 LR.

I expect there' a whole lot more varieties in ammunition in any given brand than there are in chips. Pressures and velocities might well change in different lots of ammo, requiring yet another box type. Massive expense and, as noted, most customers would neither know the difference nor care. Besides, you can always visit their website for velocity/energy/trajectory.
I recall a comment by an automotive writer maybe half a century ago: "Whoever sells the most bananas makes the most money, brown spots or not."

I do feel your pain. As an old guy who "works" part time in a gun shop, I often struggle to find even the basic info on a box of ammo. ( Cased ammo is even worse!) OF course having old eyes is 1/2 the problem....
