Not sure what the service ammo is for the NYPD but the Texas state troopers I've met in my area carry the Sig P320 & Hornady Critical Duty.

I do believe it’s Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P.

Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P. From what I've read, NYPD, and other agencies that use the round, has had good results in actual shootings.

I remember when we first got the NYPD issued G-19s in '91, they gave us politically correct FMJ, the JHP ammo was too barbaric. I think that ended when a couple of transit shooting with the bullets bouncing off the tiles in the subway platforms changed their minds. I think the 124 +P GD was a big improvement. I know 4 of them did fail to penetrate a Carhartt jacket in a Mid-town Manhattan shooting.

Speer Gold Dot 124 Grain 9mm +P not penetrating a Carhartt Jacket is a social media urban legend.

"There is simply no way a 9mm bullet moving at over 1,200 feet per second is going to be slowed, much less stopped, by anything less than soft body armor.

The laws of physics don’t change in New York City, so what really happened?

Mr. Conrad was shot in one part of his torso, the bullets passed through his body and expanded as they are designed to do, had just enough energy to punch through the skin on the opposite side of his body, and then were stopped as they hit the back side of the jacket."

Inspector Emanuel Katranakis reiterated what police told the Daily News at the time.

“The ammunition and the projectiles functioned as designed,” Katranakis said.
"The bullets did not penetrate the *back*of Conrad’s jacket.
There was not enough energy to perforate the rear articles of clothing", Katranakis said.

Claims Carhartt Jacket Stopped NYPD Bullets Were False

I was involved in a gunfight in a small parking lot in 1974 and our politically correct ammo was the round nose 158 grain HV. Every round went through the bad guys (BG) and one of those rounds hit a passing citizen in the butt. Our carry ammo was changed to the FBI +P hollow point after that.

Along with the NYPD, many agencies issue the 124 grain +P Gold Dot. It's been around a long time and has an extremely good track record. I've used it for quite a while and have never felt the need to jump to anything else in the 9mm.

Nope. Transit and Housing Police always carried the HP rounds due to the higher likelihood of ricochets in a concrete and steel environment like a train station or housing project. I remember them getting the different ammo at qualifications.

It was the shooting of Amadou Diallo in February, 1997, that got us hollow points. Diallo was shot at very close range when he pulled his wallet in a dark vestibule. One of the cops yelled “GUN!” And backed up as he fired a few shots. The other three officers believed he had just been shot. They opened up. 41 shots fired. 19 hit Diallo. Two were fatal, but not immediately. He died in the ambulance.

The fmj bullets passed through Diallo. They hit the brick wall behind him, and the ricocheted BACK at the cops firing them. That, plus the hell of “GUN!”, and the cop falling down as he backed up, made the cops believe he had been shot.

They also switched out the Federal 158 grain Nyclad + P SWC ammo to the same ammo in a hollow point version for revolvers.
