.22 Magnum ammo in a revolver
Happened to find a data sheet of some chronograph results with .22 Magnum ammo. The guns used were two S&Ws, a 48 with a 8 3/8" barrel and a 4" 63 that had an extra 651 cylinder fitted. I still have the 63 but sold the 48 about 2 years ago..
I have data for all rounds when fired through the 48. I only did about a 1/3 of them through the 63. Where there is only one number that will mean that the ammo was only shot in the 48. If a second lower number is present than that would be the 63.
CCI MiniMag 40 gr. JHP: 1400/1277
Winchester 40 gr. JHP: 1391/-
Fiocchi 40 gr. SP: 1433/1262
Federal Classic 50 gr HP: 1153/-
CCI TNT: 1590/1430
Federal 30 gr. HP: 1680/1452
Fiocchi 40 gr. HP: 1352/-
Remington 40 gr. PSP:1322/-
Remington 32 gr. V-Max: 1457/-
Remington 40 gr. HP: 1315/-
RWS 40 gr. HP: 1404/-
CCI MaxiMag 40 gr. FMJ: 1385/1237

A lot of shooters say that .22 Magnum from a handgun is a waste of money... Most of the .22 LR ammo I've clocked from a 4" revolver didn't make 1000 fps...for killing game or personal defense, I'll take the extra 2-300 fps any time...
Somewhere I have another data sheet with more guns/ammo tests...

I carry a NAA .22 Magnum for those times when something bigger just isn't possible or practical. I use Winchester's 30 grain V-Max which has a published velocity of 2250 fps (I am sure that it doesn't reach that velocity when fired from my NAA). In a purely subjective test, I shot an over-ripe watermelon from about 10 feet away and it literally exploded.
If you get a chance to test some, I'd really be interested.
I also bought some Hornady 30 grain V-Max (2200 fps) at a really good price at last weekend's gun show (about half of what I paid for the Winchester at a local gun shop). I didn't have another melon, so I used a couple empty 2 liter soda bottles filled with water, again at about 10 feet from the muzzle. I expected to see the bottles rupture and spray, but both were through and through shots. The exit holes on both bottles had less than 2 inch tears and the caps, which normally blow off, stayed on the entire time. I was able to find one of the bullets in the backstop, and it did not expand at all, in fact, the red polymer tip was barely deformed and hadn't compressed into the hollow cavity at all.

Thanks for sharing these Bob! I got lucky and snagged a 351c the other day and have been toying with the idea of carrying it around the farm. Two CCI shot shells up front, and then 5 CCI Maxi HPs to follow.
I guess that I need to break out the chrony and milk jugs once it cools down here.

I have a 48 8 3/8" that loves the 50 grain Federals, nickles size groups at 25 yards if I do my part.
Someone is now marketing a .22 WMR "critical defense" round made with the shorter barrels in mind, haven't shot any of it though.

I am looking for a spare cylinder for my new-to-me 34-1. Either a 651 or 51. I too have been in the ".22WMR is a rifle round" camp but I want the versatility.

I have the KEL-TEC 22 mag pistol that has a 30 round magazine.
A true fire out the barrel and fun to shoot.
Thin, lightweight, and have carried it for self-protection.
I have seen what a 22 mag does to a human.

safearm...your round is probably going to do about 1100 fps depending on which NAA you have... If it is the little shorty it probably will be down around a 1000...
Some .22 Mags expand and some don't... The TNT was like a little Gold Dot hollow point...
Also put the CCI Stinger in the lineup...it expands even from handguns...

I have shot the Critical Defense through a rifle and the stuff is devastating. You don't want to get in its way.

Thanks for the information. I have the short (1.125 inch) barrel. I'm going to the Mississippi Braves game tonight, which is across the street from Bass Pro Shop. I'll stop in to see if they have any of the CCI Stingers.

...CCI Stingers are .22 Long Rifle+ not Magnums....they will split in a Magnum chamber.... I would really recommend a FMJ as from that short a barrel it is unlikely any HP will expand...

I found CCI Maxi-Mag +V in .22 WMR as BPS. Rated as 2200 fps, their website says it will produce 1600 fps from a 6 inch revolver. It's a 30 grain JHP. I have a couple of one gallon milk jugs to test it.

Can't understand why Ruger didn't make a Magnum Bearcat a regular production item...especially now that they have an adjustable sight version....

Had a Ruger Single Six when I was a lot younger and had great eye sight and rock steady nerves.
The 6" barrel was pretty accurate out to 25-30 yards on "Vermin"
that came into range while driving the gravel back roads in Calif.
in the Sac. Valley, when we were almost old enough to drive a jeep.
Only problem , there is no place to rest the pistol for a right angle shot !!
Lots of the pest got off easy for the return trip or next visit.
Never lucky enough to get to try it out in a rifle.

For those having strong interest but have not yet bought a 22 RFM handgun, my reply may be useful.
***
Decades ago my father bought a High Standard over/under derringer in 22 RFM. Muzzle blast from yellow boxed Winchester hollow points was awe inspiring, and a sheet of fire blasted out about two feet. The short-barreled derringer was so unpleasant to fire, he disposed of it in favor of a two-inch barreled Combat Masterpiece that he kept until his death.
While I do not have experience with longer barreled handguns in 22 RFM, it would be prudent to shoot it in conditions of intended use. That is, if it's for personal defense, shoot it indoors and out doors without ear protection. If woods-walking carry gun, outdoors will do you well.
Hope this helps.

,22 Mag in a revolver
Bought a .22 LR Charter Arms 3" stainless Target Pathfinder in mid 80's. After about a year, sent in back to the factory and had them fit in with a .22 Mag.cylinder. Impressive muzzle flash and roar... Noticed firing at an indoor range that the bench was covered in unburned powder residue, but the little, gun was a joy to carry and,was accurate too. Heracy to say on this site, but I wish,I hasn't traded it off. Been looking for well over 20 years for a replacement and never, have found another stainless in 3". Think I paid about $165. NIB. Had a s&w 650 too and let that go as well. Seeing what 650's sell for today I kick myself when I think about it. shame I don't have access to a time machine, and I know I'm not the only one only one on this site.

I have always regarded .22 Magnum velocities from a handgun to be just about equivalent to the .22 long rifle from a rifle. Looks like that's about true.

Oops, lost track of this thread because notifications aren't showing. Mine is a BFR with 7.5" barrel. I'd considered the Raging Hornet like yours, but they are so hard to find on the market that I gave up.
