I didn't know what cheap was......
I have new need for AK 47 ammo and was having a tough time finding brass/boxer cartridges for reloading, so I just got a box of TulAmmo steel cased stuff and figured, "Hey, 12 bucks for 20 rifles rounds isn't bad until I get set up for reloading". Today I went to try it out and noticed that there are FORTY rounds in each box! I believe that is cheaper than I can reload.
Well, if they decide to quit importing the stuff I'm ready I guess.

I have a bolt gun in 7.62x39 and an AR in the same caliber. I shoot steel in the AR and brass in the bolt(which I reload) Tula / Wolf which ever, makes great blastin' ammo. I buy S&B or PPU for the bolt gun.

Yeah, there are some good deals on ammo out there right now. I've been buying brass cased Federal 9mm 115 grain ball ammo at Walmart for $33.87 for 200 rounds. Plinking ammo plus brass cases for loading later. The brass cased is actually cheaper than the Federal aluminum cased stuff right now.

Take a look at SGAmmo.com, they have some of the lowest prices that I have seen in a while on several calibers.

A while back, they had some 220 grain or so PPU x39 JSP, REALLY REALLY CHEAP, I thought about buying some just for the brass.

I read somewhere that it is possible to reload steel case ammunition with Berdan primers. Anyone actually attempt it?

Not sure if it was berdan primed but I've read a fair number of posts on the internet about successfully reloading steel cases. As I recall it didn't take any special dies or anything unless they are Berdan primed then you'd need something to get the old primers out. Pretty sure the cost and what I presume would be limited availability of Bredan primers would eliminate any cost savings.
Seems like I recall you can't reload a steel case very many times compared to brass but even 2-3 times might be a benefit.

Yep.....I reload many calibers but not for my SAM7SF since (as noted by you) I can purchase cheaper then trying to reload.

I'm just happy that ammo (and components) are actually available now, after so long a period of nothing available, except from hoarders looking to reach deep into the pockets of those who had the need.
Good time to make sure you have everything you need to get through the next ammo drought. Looking on the shelves now I see a couple of thousand large rifle primers, about 7,000 large pistol, nearly 10,000 small pistol, and a dozen canisters of various powders. Easy enough to get now, and prices aren't terribly high. Get it while you can, and keep your inventory stocked up!

I'm going to get some of that, but there's none on the shelves right around here. Love to push that 'confirm order' button.
PS: I used to dislike PPU ammo. I called it 'P-U' ammo. Now I REALLY LIKE it. Funny how things change.

Prying the primers out doesn't seem like fun. I like the idea of getting a dowel, filling the case with water and 'hydraulically' removing it. Wear your bathing suit.
Now resizing the steel I'm not too sure about I'd think lots of lube would be called for.
I'm not sure how to get berdan primers seated either. Sind the anvil is part of the primer pocket, I don't suppose you'd want to bang on them too much. Of course I had a pistol primer go off in a Lee Hand Loader one time. It kinda rang my bells.

Seen on internet...
Using hydraulic tool to remove berdan primer.
Using carbide dies to size and reload.
Adding a third hole to convert to boxer.
Using slightly undersized boxer primers, and "glueing" them in with sealant (also nail polish as expedient).
Some of this together, some separate. But apparently it's all doable.
Ten years ago Grafs had boxes of Tula Berdan Primers marked 7.62x39 for sale in thier store.
Lot of trouble to go to for ease of picking up cases with a magnet. ;-)

The tools to do it ain't cheap.
I would have to be in real survivalist mode to attempt that. I'll do about anything once or twice for fun, but that is at the bottom of even MY list.

JMHO....and I repeat JMHO I don't think an AK is the type of thing one would reload for...or want to reload for. I owned one myself back in the day and we bought cheap surplus ammo by the case...we blasted away with it and we didn't pick up our brass. Maybe it's just me, maybe I'm a painfully slow and inefficient reloader, but I can't imagine reloading for an ammo hog like the AK. They throw brass really far and scatter it. Long story short, IMHO stick to bulk buying the cheap, steel cased or the older corrosive surplus stuff...unless you want to spend half of your free time sitting at the loading bench.

Yeah, I don't think I could save a penny by reloading those, I'm a reloader and I like to be able to reload for anything. I got some PPU brass rounds that are boxer primed so I can play around, but most of it will come from my LGS who is known for not having the lowest prices. (He's smart. He practically gives away the firing range to get people through the store)

Go with a flintlock if you want cheap. $10 of ammo will last all afternoon. Only problem is that the rifles can get awful expensive.
