Default Roll crimping factory ammo?

Question - anyone roll crimp factory 45 Colt ammo to better cycle in Model 1892 lever action? I roll crimp my 45 Colt reloads for use in Model 1892 lever action. Cycle much more smoothly than my formerly made non-crimped reloads.

I sometimes shoot factory 45 Colt which is not roll crimped and it occasionally snags when pulling the lever up to push round into chamber. OAL and bullet profile nearly identical so I’m considering giving the factory ammo a slight roll crimp to break the sharp edge where the bullet meets the case.

I would appreciate informed input. Respectfully, Bill

I have never had occasion to do it, but I don't see a problem with it. If it works for you, it works for you.

If the bullets are jacketed I'd do a very light roll crimp. I experiment a little to find the lightest crimp that would load smoothly. Jacketed bullets aren't crimped and too heavy a crimp will probably bulge the case.

Most, if not all "revolver" ammo uses a roll crimp. It's the proper crimp to prevent bullet pull.

Like your 92, my .357 92 lever likes tight crimps better. I used up all my "edgy" .38/.357 ammo in my revolvers and now I buy only factory ammo for that caliber that comes with a tight crimp from the factory.

I've settled on Herters 158gr FMJ in .38 and .357 for plinking. It is Cabela's house brand, but I think it's just rebranded S&B ammo.

For serious work, I use American Eagle 158gr JSP in .357.

I don't know if these brands crimps are tight in your caliber, but you might be able to find something less "edgy" on the shelf.

Good luck.

Thanks for all the input. Getting some Underwood XTP 45 Colt 250 and 300 grain today. Curious to see how they are crimped.

As suggested just a little roll crimp to tame the edge without damaging the metal jacket.

The Underwood XTP ammo just arrived. Case mouth more heavily crimped than I expected. Starline brass. Nice looking ammo looking forward to trying it out at the range.
