after selling off a few firearms, I have quite a few open & sealed boxes of ammo that I no longer have a use for, can I legally list and sell them online? if so, where would I do that ?

You can certainly list it online - here, Gunbroker, etc, - but not ebay. Shipping needs to be ground - Fedex or UPS - not USPS. Shipping boxes need to be marked with the "black diamond."

You may do better to just bring them into a gun show and sell them in one lot. Shipping hazardous materials is expensive. Either that or make sure you charge enough. Good luck.

Yes, I'd agree the gun show route is an easier way to go. I am fairly certain that there is no "hazardous materials" extra charge - but, ammunition becomes expensive to ship because of its weight.

You can always try your local gun shop. Last week a guy walked into ours looking to sell a LOT of 357 magnum boxes of 50. The shop owner was kinda "meh" but this guy jumped on the chance and paid him 15 bux a box. And this guy walked out with 500 rounds of NOS 357 mag..

I have sold ammo on Armslist but only belly to belly cash in hand.

Armslist is OK but you can get some real strange characters, and unfortunately a lot of flakes.

I usually sell ammo on a local gun board. Most parts of the U.S. have a local or state board of members. What's nice is there is usually a feedback process in place and that keeps the flakiness to a minimum.

Ammo weighs heavy,so it's expensive to ship. I also believe that they add a surcharge for these restricted materials.

Local gun clubs, shooting ranges, are good places to sell odd lots of ammo and shooting accessorys too.
Even if the club or range is primrily a shotgun sport facility, the members are shooters and rifle and pistol ammo will be of interest as will any other shooting 'stuff'.
If you're not a member of any, see if a friend is or just walk in and ask if you can put the stuff up for sale there, either in person or an ad on the Bulletin Board. A few $$ of the profit to the club of course.

Stuff like that goes fast at our club especially in person on a day when Skeet and Sporting Clays ranges are open.

But at either,,price it very reasonably to make it sell,,or you just end up taking it back home again.

You are correct - no hazmat on loaded ammo, only primers and powder. However, cannot ship ammo USPS and box must be marked with ORM-D sticker UPS or FedEx

Ammo is not considered a hazardous material like primers and powder. Other than the weight there are no additional charges for shipping ammo.

What and how much ammo do you have?

I usually keep the ammo because inevitably i end up buying something chambered for it in the future. It will cost you more to replace it in the future for sure.

If you do sell it via an auction or ad do not ship it to CA if your from out of state, the stupid new ammo law prohibits "online" or mail order ammo being shipped from out of state to non retailers. The gun range bulletin board is a good place to start.

Some states/localities have smaller "Armslist" or "Craigslist" type websites for selling/trading guns/ammo/accessories, etc. There is one in Texas called the Texas Gun Trader, your state/area may also have one. I have sold quite a bit of old ammo on TGT, also a few guns, never had any problems in doing so. Most of my activity has been with others in the general Austin/San Antonio area as face-to-face transactions. Even had one guy drive here all the way from Houston to buy an unusual military rifle I wanted to sell.

I don't think you can use Craigslist for guns and ammo.

There is no extra charge from UPS for small arms ammo. A couple weeks ago I sent 2 boxes of 32Rem ammo about 100mi.
Box was 6"x6"x4" and weighed under 3lbs. Cost $28. UPS is
actually putting a sir charge on small packages through the back
door. They look at each package as a stop. They don't want the
small package trade from the public. If it was legal to ship ammo
in the mail same items would have fit small FRB and shipped for
$7.95. So you are much better off to sell locally or at a show.

There are localities now that require ammo purchases to be entered into a logbook. NYC is one such area. We can reasonably expect other areas to do the same in the future.

Apologies to Will Rogers, I never met a box of ammo I didn't like. I would hold onto ammunition. At least it doesn't have to be registered, and it costs nothing! JMHO.

haven't had one in years , but if your ammo is priced within reason , you won't have trouble getting rid of it.
an added bonus is that most anything gun-related helps draw a bunch of interested people which have a chance at looking at your other items also .

It is not their choice!! You can not go to secondary shippers, like at malls, flower shops etc. But there are no state or federal laws that allow them to not ship ammo just because they do not want to, so do not allow them to BS you. Look at the shipping regs before you go, because they can and do "make" up rules as they go along, do not let them lie to you. Certainly NO ammo US mail. Also you need to know which states that you can and cannot ship to. Be Aware that certain states like ca. have local restrictions, such as you can ship brand w with bullet B, to one county or town but not another. Also it is cheaper to ship 3 boxes than one box based on ( per box price). first box 12.50, 2 boxes14.28, 3 boxes 15.00. No handgun ammo to any under 21, I make sure I have a drives license. Some states you might have to ship to an FFL. Make sure you know the laws before shipping, not based on what a " customer says". As suggested earlier listing it on the forum gives everyone here a chance, you do not have to pay a fee, and your not competing against ammo sellers that do it for a living. Be Safe,
