Not often seen like this
I acquired a 1917 S&W Army marked revolver and two boxes of old ammo came with it. It's been like this since the 20s.

Very nice old revolver and the ammo looks similar to the original military half moon clip ammo. Very cool.
If you have access to a vacuum sealer you might want to seal that ammo to prevent corrosion. Just a thought.
Is there a date on that box of ammo? The U.S. Cartridge Company supplied 60% to 70% of the small arms ammo to the military during WWI and I think Winchester bought them out soon after the war ended. That ammo must be from before 1918 and probably earlier.

Some of the clipped ammo is dated '18' others marked 45acp.
Some GI issue and the other commercial?
USCC made it to about 1926/27 before Winchester took them over and moved the works to NewHaven.
But some other company other than Win had control just after WW1, can't remember who. ****
The orig owner died just about the time WW1 ended and that lead to the sale of the company.
USCC in name did stay up and operating in Lowell during that post WW1 time till the Win takeover.

It was the National Lead Co that took control ('...purchased controlling stock interest in USCC...') in 1918 after the companys owner, Paul Butler died.
Paul Butler was the son of the Benjamin Butler who orig started the company.

I remember seeing pictures of boxes of USCCo .45 ACP ammo allegedly used in the famous Chicago St. Valentines Day Massacre Thompson SMGs. As I remember it looks to be the same box as yours. I doubt the USCCo box originally held the clipped rounds.

I would say that is most likely the case, probably just used an empty 50 rd box to hold them. The military supplied clipped ammo in a long thin box with the clips interlocked (very similar to the standard 20 rd box for loose rounds) that held 24 rounds in clips. I don't have a picture but a web search could probably find a pic, have seen a few of the boxes at cartridge collector and gun shows over the years
