Default CCI Polymer coated 22 LR ammo.

Have any of you shot the CCI polymer coated 22 LR ammo yet? They are coated in red, white and blue polymer. Midway has them on sale for 5 cent a round.

I just ordered 4 300 round boxes to take advantage of their free shipping for orders over $50 and plan to give them a go in my 22 rifles and pistols. I don't know if these are a special run or CCI plans to keep making polymer coated ammo, but I figured I would give them a try out and see how they do. I've had decent luck with using polymer coated bullets in reloading for pistols, but have never shot any polymer coated factory ammo yet.

What's the point of using polymer-coated .22 LR bullets?

We tested some when they first came out a few years ago with target 22s and scopes. If you target shoot you wont buy them anymore.

THIS IS AN AMAZING DEVELOPMENT. CCI IS MY BRAND OF CHOICE FOR .22 LR AMMO. I SHOOT THE .40GR MINI-MAG, EXCLUSIVELY....

MINI-MAGS ARE HARD ENOUH TO FIND ON SHELVES IN MY NECK O' THE WOODS, SO I DOUBT THAT I WILL SEE ANY OF THIS POLYMER COATED AMMO, ANY TIME SOON.........

They did a run of Red and Green at Christmas last year. In my local shop you can buy 275 count of Federals for $14 as apposed to the CCIs for $20.
Gimmick!!

I guess I will see if they are a gimmick, since I bought 4 boxes of them. But they were actually cheaper than regular CCI Minimags with the same specifications (bullet weight and velocity). They are shipped according to the Midway email I received a little while ago.

"Just read suppose to reduce friction and barrel fouling."

The reason I asked earlier what the purpose of the polymer coating was because that I have never experienced any leading or barrel fouling issues with any brand of .22 LR ammunition. Some competitive shooters are obsessive about NOT cleaning the bores of their .22 rifles and handguns for fear of somehow damaging its grouping performance.

I suspect the real reason is that it's just a gimmick to enhance sales.

Tend to agree DWalt. Only 22 magnum for me but I do swear by the Maxi-Mag 40 grain stuff as it sure groups in my guns.

Maybe so DWalt, but it is pretty cheap from a quality ammo manufacturer. That's the main reason I bought it, as I am not a competitive shooter. I do have a good shooting friend that has an accurate 10/22 that messes around competitively that I will let try these out with his good gun. I plan to mostly use them in pistols.

Everybody knows that 22lr NEVER have to be cleaned so whats all the fuss about leading or lube build up?

It's been around a while. It's Pretty

Here is 20 minutes of the Plinkster if anyone wants to kill some time. Shooting a heavily modded rifle, in a solid rest with a feather like trigger.

He doesn't really give much information about the ES of his 10-shot groups fired at 50 yards, but from what I can see, they are printing a little less than 2". And that is about what would be expected for most any bulk pack .22 ammunition fired from a bench rest using a scoped non-match grade rifle. Match grade .22 ammunition from a match rifle would be expected to group at around 1" or less (10 shot groups). I don't see any particular advantage to shooting the poly-coated bullets, but if they are priced right, there is no down side to using them either.

Well, I went to the range with a box of this and the remains of a box of some cruddy Winchester 555 ammo and shot them both up. The Winchester 555 was only marginally reliable, with several FTF in my SW22 Victory in around 120 rounds and even had 1 FTF in my Ruger 77/22 bolt gun out of around 80 rounds. The CCI poly coated however, performed very well in both the pistol and the rifle. Now my Ruger has the stock Ruger trigger pull, which is like lawyer high, but for the money this cheap ammo shoots great. My Victory just loved it and gave me zero problems with it. The Ruger also shot well with it, with decent 10 shot groups, especially for nickel a round ammo. I had no FTF problems with this CCI ammo.

This is a couple of 10 shot groups I shot with the Ruger at 50 yards:

I just ordered another 4 boxes of this stuff and also ordered a Timney 77/22 sear and spring kit for my Ruger. I am just fed up with the high trigger pull on it and figured it can do nothing but help make for a lighter trigger pull.

MidwayUSA dropped the price to $14.40 a box now and they still are running free shipping for orders $49 and over on select items (including these bullets). They showed 10 boxes left so I bought another 5 boxes, so if anyone is looking for some good CCI ammo for 4.8 cents/round there are 5 boxes left at Midway.

BTW, I upgraded my 77/22 with the Timney sear and spring kit and now have a good trigger on that gun, with a 2 1/2 lb crisp trigger pull instead of 6-8 lb. So I expect my groups will tighten up a bit when shooting this ammo. The 77/22 is actually really fun to shoot now with a good trigger!

I bought 5 boxes on sale to give them a try. I've been shooting polymer rounds out of my centerfires for a few years and really like the way they group and the clean barrels after shooting.

I was disappointed with the groups and the functioning of the Red White And Blue ammo. Lots of failure to loads and groups were about 3 inches at 25 yards from my Ruger Mark IV 22/45 lite which groups under an inch with blazers and Mini Mags.

My shooting buddy, who is an engineer, also tried them with the same luck I had in his Mark III Hunter. They worked great out of his Browning. He decided to mic 10 of each color to see if that caused the problem since I told him I found the White bullets to cause most of the problems.

I was right. The Red's mic .222 to 223, same as the Blue. The Whites came out at .22 to 225 and they wouldn't go into the chamber.

Accuracy standpoint they are good cheap ammo for plinking but not for any type of competition.

I'll add a belated question about this ammo. Has anyone been able to verify that this stuff significantly reduces fouling in a suppressor? My AAC gets really dirty really fast. Cleaning is a bit of a pain.
