Never would have thought this would happen...
Afternoon, Gents.
Picked up a used S&W 1905 4th Change, 6", . 38 Special Target sighted revolver (detailed in an another post).
Today, stopped by Sportsman's Warehouse to pick up some factory .38 Special target wadcutter ammo to plink with.
Not only was there not a box to be found anywhere, the clerk (30 something) had never heard of or seen such ammo.
I showed him pictures of what it looked like and told him what for and why it was used....
I have aged out......

Doesn’t surprise me. That’s one of the reasons I load my own. Wad cutters are hard to find around here.

And if you might happen upon a box, the price will be throught the roof. I have a couple cases of Winchester Yellow box, from long ago stashed away, but load my own, and in 32 as well.

I asked for 8mm Mauser ammo once, and the kid behind the counter had never heard of it.

Gentlemen, In stock ammo, guns, magazines, and reloading supplies is your friend.
I always find ammo that is significantly less expensive (including shipping) than any local seller.

In MY old days, the clerks at the gun shops knew about guns. Today, they are kids that are paid $10 an hour to do a "job", and they don't require any knowledge to be hired. The comments on this thread are not surprising. Go to XXX and ask questions about the refrigerators they sell and you'll get the same answer...

I’ll say that I’m willing to guess that most young’uns don’t know what a Wadcutter round is. I guess I’m not all that young (41), I grew up on a steady diet of revolvers and back then, Wadcutter were about the only thing we shot.
Around where I live, they’re rare to come by, few (if any) places carry them. Plenty of 38 spcl, no Wadcutter.

Gads I used to hate having to qualify with those things. The old full wadcutters do not get along well with speedloaders. Fortunately that went by the wayside when the tide switched to qualifying with duty ammo. They do punch nice clean holes though.

Funny, a couple of years ago I was rummaging around the shelf in a LGS that has a pretty good inventory of reloading supplies and came across a dusty bag of 1000 cast 38 WC discounted for $28. When I got the the register, the 60ish owner commented that he didn't think anybody knew what wadcutters were anymore. I asked if he could get more and he just laughed.

Hornady has them, 250 pack. They used to come in 500 pack much cheaper than 250 are now.

I would also argue that even though you're going to spend a bit more money at a local gun shop ( not a big box store ) than ordering it online it's a great idea. Those local places need the business, and every little bit counts. The extra service and a relationship with the store owner is worth the extra green.

I got a couple boxes of Fiocci .38 Special Wadcutters at Academy last year. I need to go look at their current ammo sale.

What does it mean....
...that night before I loaded a few hundred full wcs. One thing about full wadcutters is that they force you to keep the loads down.

W/C's aren't tacticool,,they're target/bullseye shooter stuff.
They were used in a situation that highlighted handgun shooting skill that included shooting off hand and at ranges of 50 & 25yds at paper targets that didn't explode, fall to pieces or have pics of babes held agin' their will by Freddie Krueger.
Who'd want to have to do that..
So they have gone the way of the woolly mammoth.

I enjoy being carded! Gives me a chance to show off the photos of my great-grandchildren.
I also have 5 valid government-issued ID's, six if I take the time to dig out my passport.

I used to be issued wadcutters for practice ammo, a long time ago. I also still shoot them, but load my own.

Not surprised. I have used factory, and my own hand loaded wadcutters. But I don't remember the last time I saw any for sale in a store...
