For revolvers- .41mag
In a semi- .45acp
In a pinch, I can deep conceal a 9mm

I think that accuracy with speed trumps caliber, so its 9mm if I had an auto, or .32 or .38, in my revolvers. This takes a lot of range time, putting 5 rounds in a 5 inch circle at 5 yards as quick as possible. The smaller cartridges have 2 advantages in this regard. Lower cost allows more range time, and less recoil gives faster follow up shot time.
I also think that blood loss trauma from any normal handgun caliber will not be an instant stopper. That takes a heart or brain shot, which takes accuracy, in any caliber. Blood loss trauma might incapacitate in a matter of minutes, or the assailant might expire in the emergency room, but remain in the fight long enough to take the defender with him.
Best,
Rick

I have many pistols in each caliber.
I recall when ammunition was scarce, and everything was picked clean, except for 40 S&W. Nowadays ammunition is plentiful and cheap. Only a couple of years back, reloading powder was also scarce.
Having recently acquired my suppressors, I find that the 9 mm, 40 S&W and 45 ACP suppress well, even though the 45 ACP is the natural choice for sound suppression, even from longer barrels or Plus P loads. I was surprised at 40 S&W to suppress as well as 45 ACP in 180 gr bullets. I may strongly consider a reloading press for 40 S&W .
I do prefer 9 mm because of capacity, ballistics and size. 9 mm has become versatile for PCC carbines, as well as many sizes of handguns (revolvers, Micro, compact, subcompact, duty and competition). 45 ACP is great but the variety is not as versatile, and it gives up capacity. At closer distances 45 ACP shines, but 9 mm and 40 S&W have a longer reach, particularly with a red dot in play.
However, when things become scarce, it’s best to consider a backup when that cycle occurs, again.

Good point! Currently, I've paired down to a single handgun caliber, 9mm. One of the predicating thoughts for this thread was a scarcity of ammo caused by hoarding or an unexpected SHTF scenario. If that happens, what is your backup plan/caliber? As a side note, I do have a handy little Winchester bolt action carbine in .223.

Since we're considering cost and availability, we're not talking defense ammo. How many people are you going to shoot?
Obviously, 22LR is the most fun cartridge for all ages.

I'd stick with 9x19, even if everything were the same price.
It just seems to be the most reasonable combination of effectiveness and size, in my opinion. It seems to be comfortable to shoot and follow up quickly, across the widest spectrum of handguns.

Actually, to me, I want to be familiar with, and comfortable with my defensive round. I don't want a life/death situation to be determined by a round/gun that I don't want to shoot at the range. I want to be proficient with it, so in the event I NEED it, it's familiar to me.
I think a 10mm in subcompact is a neat idea, but if I don't like shooting it, I won't practice with it. Regardless of price. And I don't like trusting my life to something I have no practice with.

For semi-auto I'm sticking with 9mm, 124grain at NATO velocity.

For carry?
9mm. I'd use it even if it cost more than .45 or .40.
It's equally effective, less recoil, higher capacity.

I have stockpiles of many calibers. I like the portability of 9 mm and 5.56mm, as well as 22 LR

357 Sig ammo for the auto, 41 magnum for the revolver.
I do wish they cost the same as 22LR. :-)
Sure would be great to get five thousand rounds of 41 magnum for $250. Just tough to carry home!

In a revolver either 38 special/357 magnum.
In a semi auto 1st choice would be 45acp. then 40S&W and lastly 9mm.
For a rifle 30-06, 308,and 223/5.56
And just to be the odd man out 44 special. Frank

.357 in either Sig or Magnum is the cat's ***!
Nothing comes close to being accurate and powerful.

I would shoot far more rifle rounds if cost were no issue at all.

.357 all day long for handguns, 12 ga. for shotguns and 300H&H, 220 grain for rifles. These would handle anything I could ever want on the North American continent.

I prefer to carry a 3" 686+, and I love the .357 Magnum in a 20" Model 92 short rifle.
That said, I also like 9mm in both the 1911 format and in AR-15 carbines and pistols. It's a very flexible round.
I was playing with these today on steel plates out to 200 yards. With hand loaded 115 gr HAPs or XTPs at 1525 fps in the 16" barrel and 1330 fps in the 10.5" barrel, I get 2 MOA accuracy at 100 yards. Even with the gusty wind this afternoon I was getting 5" groups at 200 yards.

Cost is not much of a factor.
The vast majority of my ammo is 7.62×51 NATO.
2nd is .357 mag. 3 out of 4 of my guns are .357s.

As a carry piece, I like my 9mm shield. I gave up on the debate of, "this caliber vs that one", many years ago. I prefer to work on things like situational awareness and practical shooting drills. So the 9mm shield is comfortable and conceals nicely for me. Plus I already have dies for that caliber. (for practice and fun. I carry Federal HST)
In home is a different story. I like my M&P AR-15. This gun has become my standard defender of my chickens.

Cost will always be an issue if you shoot a lot. Availability not so much if you reload. How much do you shoot? 1K a year or 1K a month. At 0.20/rd. that difference will be $2200 in a year. Of course it will be less if you reload or more if you don't. I'm just pulling a # out of my hat.
Cartridges don't all offer the same performance nor do they cost the same to shoot. I shoot a lot of 45 ACP and try to minimize the cost by reloading. I can live with it. 9 mm seems almost a cop out because 45 ACP just isn't that much more expensive to reload. A few cents at best.
38 is just the 9 mm of the revolver world. Step on up to 44 if you want to have some fun.

Bmcgilvray, of all the calibers on your list I reload for about 15 of them. The 45/70's get fed with cast bullets same as thr 7.62x54e,30-30,45acp and a few others. (mm I don't bother with reloading as that is the caliber of my carry gun. If I remember right I carry federals hydra shocks with the post in the center of the bullet. !24 grain. My buddy favors the same ammo but in 147 grain. Frank
