9mm vs .45 vs 40mm?
Friends, the net abounds with so many stopping power threads, which is better? 9mm, .45, or 40mm, for stopping an attacker with a single shot? Last night the news said a guy killed someone with a 40mm pistol, so there’s that. But doesn’t the army use the 9mm?? Please cast your vote!
9mm
.45
40mm

Recoil must be stout with a 40mm handgun, especially with +P's! Suppose it was carried IWB?

I was going to vote 40mm, but I think quick follow-up shots would be difficult, you know, in case the first shot didn't work.

A head hit with 9mm = head hit with 40mm.

Except with the 40mm, there won't be much head, neck, or shoulders left intact.

Have to go with the 40mm although practice ammo is hard to come by.

I'm guessing the 40mm will exceed that 2200fps velocity that makes a rifle better than a handgun!
I just don't want to try to stuff that 40mm down my pants!
Not exactly what I'd call suitable for concealed carry!

Somebody needs to ask Kim JoGoon, he seems to prefer large calibers when executing officials, er, duty. Joe

Flip a coin. For me it’s more about the intangibles of the personal preferences regarding a specific gun/cartridge combination.
Personally I like .357 mag or 10mm, just because it’s what I like.

We've heard it all Bofors: The only thing that counts is shot placement. But that should be a piece of cake if you mount a MK 51 fire control system on your 40. It will be a lot heavier, and the gunsmithing charges for doing the mill work will be outrageous, but you won't miss.

40mm or 40 S&W ...BIG difference .
The 40mm Bofors Anti-Aircraft Auto Cannon is just a bit more gun than the average person can pack concealed....they were hard to hide on a Navy ship.
If you do mean 40mm then yes it would be top gun in the stopping department . Knocking fighter planes out of the sky requires just a tad bit o stopping power.

9mm. That 40mm is just going to be too slow on the draw.

There you go, quick and portable 40mm:

Most of y'all think artillery when y'all think 40mm; that's cute.
When I think of 40mm I am reminded how we gained fire superiority when fighting insurgent forces in the mountains. It wasnt with no artillery either, but with pure, unadulterated courage we carried the m320 (40mm grenade launcher) into combat with deadly effect.
I guarantee a body hit with one of these puppies is as good as a headshot with 9mm or .45acp.
Listen to me reminiscing. I'm starting to sound like my grandpa.

It's better to have 9mm on you, then a 40mm at home.

Of those three, the 40 mm not only has the MOST "stopping power", but is the only one that has ANY "stopping power".

A good head hit from almost any caliber has stellar stopping power.
I know that there are many people around that seem to thrive without a brain. But even a little used brain, with a hole through it will stop it's owner. Being it man or beast.

Not always.
Seen people and animals survive head shot.
Have to hit vital part of brain to stop someone.
Movie head shots ARE NOT real-life.
The girl the Taliban tried to kill is one recent example. And that was a rifle from distance.
NO handgun is a man stopper purely by caliber
Shot placement and hitting vitals is.

I will have to agree. Let's say 80% of them.
Edit. And FYI. I did vote 40mm. One has to be really unlucky to fail to stop wit that.
