Selection and price are not good here in New Jersey. Online selection is unbeatable and price after shipping is excellent. I expect New Jersey to soon restrict or abolish online ammo purchases. This makes it a good time to stock up with my favorites.

Yup. Go for it. CA is there now and it is a major pain in the butt.

Or a good time to look into the joy's of reloading .
As far as I know , reloading your own ammo hasn't been made illegal ...yet but you may want to buy the tools while you still can .

In neighboring NY, all online ammo purchases have to go through a FFL (my LGS charges $10)so NJ will follow eventually.

So very sorry to read your post. Regret. But, you must deal with reality. So, buy now. Buy whatever you use. Buy in quantity. Serious quantity. Do not delay. Do it now. Later, you will be most thankful. For my part, I live in Georgia where such issues are not yet a concern. But, I have for many years very much enjoyed shooting US surplus military rifles. Back about 2011 I realized that I needed to buy ammo while it was available and affordable. Bought it by the case. Price was truly excellent. Now ... such ammo and prices are just memories. But thankfully I still have many cases of that very excellent ammo on hand ... and many happy future days at the range firing my beloved rifles. Sincerely. bruce.

The online sale of ammo laws in the safe act were repealed by a MOU. It is perfectly legal to buy ammo online and have to shipped to NY for a non-ffl.

The trick is finding online retailers who will ship it directly to your house. There is a couple I use regularly who ship to zip codes outside of NYC. Some still won't ship to anywhere in NY, and that's their choice.

Stocking up on ammunition now is an excellent strategy, and will be money well-spent, beginning perhaps as early as this summer. My primary source has been SGAmmo for several years. I receive e-mails from Sam every week and watch the prices closely. In his letter preamble Sam writes that ammo prices are at, or near a twelve-year low.

None of us know what the future holds, but from a "worst-case scenario", look at California, New York, New Jersey, et. al. We do know and understand what's happening today.

I don't believe that the "speculators" have hit the Internet ammo markets yet, (buy all they can now, sell it at a great profit next year, or in the years thereafter), but if you still remember the AR market speculation...it could happen.

I don't "roll-my-own" so I can't speak to that option and strategy.

In the mid 1990's I began to stock up on low cost ammo for the most used calibers and I was reloading at a pretty good pace as well. When the last ammo and component drought hit, I was still stocked pretty well and didn't have to buy much of anything except primers as I found them.
For the past year,with once again very favorable ammo prices, I am re-stocking and replacing ammo that I shot up during the lean times. Still need to work on getting more reloadable brass cased 5.56, 300 Blackout and 30 Carbine. I'm not sure that the current ammo prices can go much lower or how much longer they can last.

Some people are 'prepping' for the anticipated economic collapse by purchasing gold and silver.

Some people understand that in the event of economic collapse the new gold will be firearms and the new silver will be ammunition.

Personally, during this period of good supplies at reasonable prices I am adding a carton or two of primers or a pound or two of powder just about every month. I will not forget the recent times when dealers' shelves were empty and the scalpers were selling anything and everything for unheard of prices (primers went from $20/thousand to over $60, if you could find them, and .22LR went from $15/500 rounds to $60-plus).

I have been reloading for 48 years and I seldom purchase factory ammunition. I may have to reconsider, perhaps soon.

It was thought that during the collapse of our government that 22 LR ammo would be used as currency , primers as small change ? That experience opened my eyes and it could easily happen again . After that little "awakening" I have made darn sure to have plenty of powder , primers and 22 LR's hoarded away. Having been a reloader for 50+ years I made sure to have dies & bullet moulds for every firearm I own , including shotguns and buckshot moulds . I have hoarded plenty of powders , primers, 22LR ammo and lead since the last panic .
I'm not sure what panic(s) are going to happen when the Democrat's get back in power but I'm ready .

The largest punch in the jaw for us here in Illinois was when they forced online sales tax last year...so it can seriously drive the cost WAY up when you factor in shipping.

Shipping costs have been getting insane for some time now anyway...but add an additional 7% on top and now it's getting difficult to find better deals than I can locally.

A case of 223 Wolf Gold is currently 262.90 at SGA, add in $16 for shipping and $18.40 in tax and all of a sudden, those $.26/rd bullets are now pushing $.30/rd.

I was shocked when I made an order from Optics Planet last Nov and they gut punched me with a whopping 10% sales tax because that what it is there in Chicago where they're located. It was a $300 optic, so that one stung.

typetwelve, it's getting harder to stay in the republic of Illinois all the time!...last week a bill to outlaw pumping your own gas, this week a bill to outlaw gas leaf blowers...another gas tax....wonder how that legalized pot revenue will help??....Lord help us!

I think Illinois is holding off on our gun rights till after the general election. Then watch out!

The local FFL/LGS is a friendly place, but they say they will not become a nickel and dime mail stop if New Jersey requires online sales to go through an FFL. They say the logistics would be horrendous—and I agree with their position.

Well since wally world has stopped selling pistol.revolver and Ar ammunition. There is only one other gun shop in town. HE's catching the overflow from what wally world does not sell. I get my factory ammo from target sports. Funny thing,you'd think that every time national elections rplls around that people would have gotten the message and started stocking up months before hand. But no they don't and then the whining and gnashing of teeth can be heard.I'm not well to do but of you buy a little at a time it adds up. case of primers one month, jug of powder the next and so on. This is my strategy as well. I can't buy it all at once but when I need something I buy it in bulk. Eventually I should have enough to ride out any ammo shortage.

Most LGS in my area are so high priced on ammo that it is more economical to buy online even with shipping and taxes included. Not worth it on one or two boxes tho. The more you buy in one order, the more economical the shipping becomes.

Texas just started requiring state tax on online purchases last year, so we lost that advantage. State tax is 6.25%. If you buy locally it's 8.25%. Some online shops charge the state tax rate and some charge the full 8.25%. And a few (very few) don't charge any tax.

This is one of the best threads I've read on any firearms forum.

Be aware of what the states around you are doing, as that's where you may be headed. Living in Washington state, I look at Oregon's repeated attempts to limit ammo purchases, and I plan accordingly. Fortunately, our law-makers in WA state are so slow about getting anything done, that it is fairly easy to stay ahead of them;e.g-get any magazines, guns or ammo that you may not be able to acquire later. I think my gf believes I'm a little paranoid when she looks in my closet.

I will say it, and continue to say it as long as I am breathing. Buy all the ammo, hi cap magazines and reloading supplies you can afford, and have room to store.

A crunch and panic will come again.

My “prepping” is based on the following logic: As time goes by I will be less and less inclined to spend money on buying ammo — but I will need no coercion at all to shoot off boxes of ammo taking up space in storage.
