Default What Comes back 1st Ammo Guns?

With 9mm probably the most popular and most sold out and XYZ Semi Auto being the most sold out handgun.

Which will the market see 1st, ammo or firearms?

Does anyone have data on what is the most sold handgun 1st quarter of 2020? I could guess but really have zero idea.

Firearms, they're non-consumable.

I agree. People caught flat-footed without ammo will be restocking for quite some time......

Ammo is a lot easier to produce than guns. Ammo manufacturing is mostly automated and to increase output just add another shift, assuming they’re not running 24/7.

Guns require a good amount of skill to produce and they’re slower to produce. There’s a lot of handwork in a gun.

I read some of the ammo manufactures had added more capacity during the last crunch. My guess is this caught companies off guard. It shouldn’t take long to up output and get it in the pipeline.

My local Walmart had 6 bulk boxes of 22LR yesterday. I bought 4 on line from another source Sunday morning and picked up 2 more at Wally yesterday. I keep about 14-20 bulk packs all the time since my wife and I shoot a lot of 22’s. The clerk in sporting goods said they’re getting their normal shipments from the manufactures but it’s selling fast.

If history is going to repeat, and it usually does, we will all be looking for ammo long after the run on guns is over. In past shortages the run on guns lasted a few months but in the case of 22 LR it was hard to find for years.

Most people panic buying guns are not enthusiasts and are not picky about what they buy. They just want a gun. Any polymer 9mm will be fine. Companies can crank those out quickly. And once they have one they are not going worry about missing out on having one.

With ammo on the other hand people see the empty shelves and worry about not being able to get more in the future so they buy all the ammo they can until it starts staying on shelves long enough that they feel confident they can get more. Which takes a lot longer. It probably takes a lot of expensive automated equipment to make ammo these days. Manufacturers want that equipment running as close to full capacity as possible to minimize costs and are not going to buy more for a sudden but temporary spike in demand.

I have been stocking up ever since ammo prices came down a few years back. It is hard to feel too sorry for enthusiasts that did not see some sort of shortage coming. So right now ammo availability is pretty far down on my list of concerns. That lots of people are going to die and we are possibly looking at the biggest economic collapse I have seen in my 60 years tops the list. My biggest gun related worry is that the 2.0 CORE I wanted to buy is probably not going to be available any time soon. Not that big a deal in the long run.

Seems like 9mm ammo is recovering and showing availability in past couple of days. The 22lr was a different story as it is low margins item for manufacturer and people bought a ton because it is much less expensive then 9mm.

I would tend to say ammo as well, for reasons already listed. But hit and miss.

While I would normally agree that the ammunition supplies would probably replenish before the gun inventories, I think some people are forgetting about the components. Most ammunition manufacturers need powder and primers, just like the recreational reloader.

From my perspective, which is currently dependent upon mail order, primers, percussion caps, and smokeless powder are hard to find. One vendor may have small pistol primers, but not large pistol. For me, I would like to add to my primers (SPP, LPP, LMR) and both magnum rifle powder and pistol powder, but finding it all at the same vendor is a challenge! Unfortunately, the ammunition manufacturers may suffer from the same powder and primer shortages we are all encountering!

It seems as though 3Fg black powder is easier to find than most flavors of smokeless! Fortunately, I am in a position to make my own percussion caps.

What guns and ammo are sold out? I just checked ammoseek and you can still buy 9mm for under $10 a box from numerous vendors. I checked gun.deals for 5 random cheap 9mm that I could think of off the top of my head and all of them were in stock.

I realize supplies are slim and prices are higher than they were 3 months ago but it’s still relatively easy to find guns and ammo. I just bought 2,000 rounds of 22 last week because I found a decent deal and wanted to stock up on subsonic rounds.

Probably a toss-up! However, I do expect to see a lot of used/ previously owned firearms on the market very soon. After all, once this “scare” is over, we can all return to our complacency....because a similar event will “never” happen again! So no need for the firearm or even a little stash of “toilet paper”! memtb

Already there I think, but what I am seeing is an influx of used safe queens on the market probably put on the block by someone that inherited it and doesn't know enough about guns to realise that grandpas old model 27 is worth more than the two M&P's he or she traded it in for.
Prices are high, but availability of older guns seems to be increasing.

I just came from my favorite LGS, and they have any kind of ammo there you would want, as far as I could tell. I walked out with one lonely box of 16 ga shotgun shells. I'm repairing a couple of old single shots for my cousin's grandkids. He passed away last December before he could finish them. I just want to make sure they work before returning them.

But honestly, they had 22 LR, 22 WMR, including shotshells for 44 and 45ACP. They had gobs of 9mm, 38 special, .357, all of the 45's, a good selection of 40's and 10mm too. As a reloader I had to check out those supplies. I saw plenty of powder, projectiles and primers. But they never have kept a lot of them anyway, and they've always been a little high on primers to my way of thinking.

Now when it came down to guns, well it looked pretty wiped out in the low priced stuff, like Sky and such. The used guns were mostly 1911 style and a few revolvers. I came real close to fondling a nice 2" model 64, but I was afraid I'd end up putting it on layaway.

I inquired about the lead time on ordering a couple of S&W revolvers I didn't see in the case, and was told, "Well,......uh,....... it's been taking us close to 3-4 weeks to get something like that in." So that's the only thing that really seemed out of order really. The shotguns were picked over, but black rifles, lever guns and bolt actions were well stocked.

I'll go back after Mother's Day is over, and see how many "mothers" got guns & ammo over the weekend.

I was able to snag some Federal aluminum cased 9mm from Bass Pro online just now, came out to just under $200 for a case (free shipping, but tax, on the $8.99 boxes). Not awful, not great.

Shortly after I got my confirmation, my buddy told me he tried and it was sold out.

Moral- know what you want, and are willing to pay up to. And if you see it, get it.

For bulk, I deal mostly with SGAmmo. The email flyers change from week to week, but they are still stocking what they can and ship quickly. Bought .22's and 9mm's from them this month.

Ammo IS eaier to produce. Talked to a seller of AR BlackRifles this AM. He is having a time getting stock all of a sudden Said he was down to under 20 complete rifles and only has 8 lowers left. According to him the BATF has changed or going to change the rules on lowers being considered firearms(they have the serial). Luckily I have all the AR 15s I need and have a complete lower I think I may get rid of...But locally handguns are getting a bit scarce. Esp fantastic plastics. Gave my grandaughter a Ruger 22 auto...one of the 22 45s. Got it CHEEP. I had given her a High Standard 22 revolver... and a 1000 rounds of ammo a couple of months ago. Took it back...she had 2 lonely little rounds of ammo left...had to give her another 550 pack... Luckily I have quite a few of them around. I also have 8 boxes of the Federal 1600 rounds out in the grudge. Ammo will be first to come back. When the electioneering heats up we'll see how the ammo supply holds up.

Guns will come back way before ammo. Reason being in a lot of areas distributors are closed or shipping less due to employees being out/sick, having to be closed or other issues.

Lots of guns are sitting collecting dust just waiting to arrive at your LGS......Ammo however was the first thing all distributors were trying to get out.....so most of that is likely already out.

Quick update- my order from Bass Pro has been "delayed". We'll see if I get it.

For those saying there's still 9mm under &10 a box, it looks like that's going to be either a Sportsman's Guide backorder, or a Bass Pro delayed shipment. Either way, not a sure thing.
