.22 Dump
UPS driver just left a massive .22 ammo dump on my front porch:
10,000 rounds of Aguila Super Extra solid tip 40 grainers. With all the talk of another massive ammo shortage I scoured the net looking for a deal. Found these for just a couple cents a round. Some call these “Mexican Mini Mags” as the quality and performance is right up there with CCIs but a lot less expensive. These are Eley primed and super reliable, runs great in my guns.
Solid boost to my rimfire stash. This should hold me over till this virus panic and ammo shortage clears up.

I have used some of that Aguila super. It seemed fine.
I just got a 60 lb box with 5.56 and #4 buck. Poor UPS only made it half way to the front door.

Good ammo, but Aguila .22 always seems to have a very fart like smell in my experience.

When you have a row of .22 Bullseye competitors, you can walk down the line and smell who is shooting Aguila.

I have also had very good accuracy and performance with Aguila. Yesterday, I had one box of 50 that had 50 fail to fire the first time. Opened cylinder, turned bullet 180°, reloaded empty chambers, and everything fired.
My concern is I have a full case (open) plus 5 bricks, from which lot did those rounds come? The 3 boxes of Remington Thunderbolts all fired the first time, but there 15 years old.

Hey JayFarmer:
I have had mixed results in the Aguilla ammo in my Pardini SP, SW model 41's and my FWB AW 093. Specifically, during cold weather (below 40 degrees), the ammo does not have enough horsepower to cycle the pistols reliably and as such, the remainder of my case is regulated to practice ammo. Something to watch for.
Regards,
Crankster

I have 6 handguns and 5 rifles in 22 And rarely have a misfire no matter the brand. In the last year I’ve probably shot 5,000 rounds And had a half dozen or less misfires. The biggest difference I see is how dirty they are. Remington thunderbolts are probably the worst I’ve seen and shot some Winchester bulk 555 round from Wally yesterday and they were nasty. My wife was shooting them in her Smith 317 and I was shooting them in a new model Bearcat. She had trouble ejecting them and I had trouble getting them in the cylinder. We both started with clean guns too.
I found them less accurate too and had a partial box of minimags That I shot. The CCI were noticeably more accurate and cleaner.
Generally I shoot Fedetal bulk from Wally and find them about as good as CCI but Wally was out of Federal recently so I grabbed two boxes of Winchester. I guess I’ll have to shoot these in my Henry.
I did a little unscientific test a few months ago with about 8 different brands and loads. Shooting all from my 617 4” I saw little difference other than. Thunderbolts were the dirtiest by far but all were accurate and 100% reliable.

I don't understand buying ammo in anticipation of a shortage in the very near future, especially when you don't need the ammo and probably won't have an opportunity to actually go out and shoot it anytime soon.
If you actually need ammo for defensive purposes, then that's one thing, but when you go buying multiple large boxes of plinking ammo that you can't or won't be able to realistically shoot, you're not preparing for a shortage, you're guaranteeing it.
I've said it before and I'll say it as many times as the subject is raised... If everyone would only buy ammo a little at a time during times when ammo is plentiful, then they would have plenty of ammo when others are scrambling to buy it in a panic for some reason or another, and thus wouldn't end up grossly overpaying for their ammo, driven by an artificial sense of urgency, (or online stores conveniently predicting an ammo shortage) resulting is a self-fulfilling prophecy.
But hey, enjoy it if you can. If you actually intend on going out to the range and shooting that stuff, then more power to you. I just don't like it when people hoard ammo which they have no need for nor any intention/capability of using.

Have not been impressed with any Aguila that I have shot. I regulate it for the Grandkids and their friends to shoot.

Speak for yourself. I can drive out in the desert anytime I please and plink or Target shoot. What makes you think I won’t be “able to realistically shoot” this ammo? It’s only a 3 year supply for me. Doesn’t hurt to be prepared, and this is all I plan to buy for the time being.

I'm going to have to try Aquila just to see if this is true.
But if you're behind me at the range: is it the Aquila?, or is it me?!
And if you looked at my stash of .22 rimfire, you would say that I took a serious dump!
(Just not all at once! - I was slowly accumulating it over a couple of years.))

I've debated trying Aguila ammo for some time.... I mainly shoot cci mini mags in my marlin and stoeger. Shoot cci standards and remington target in my 512 and .22 supershot.

I’m used to the thick, fetid smell of farts. I shoot black powder guns and they smell a lot like farts.

Best I've seen on that ammo is nearly a nickle a round, if you beat that by much I'd like to know where!

I have my own outdoor range, but since retirement I have been shooting indoors in the winter. My club requires std. velocity.
At one time the std was hard to find. I did find some Aquilla at a gun show.
Farts for sure. Also bad performance in semis and poor accuracy in revolvers. Just last week I used up the last of them and will never buy another box.

From my experience you can’t compare Aguila to CCI in terms or reliability or accuracy but for the price they work for plinking.

I'd been buying Winchester at Walmart since that's all they had in stock. My luck with the stuff has be so poor lately that I'd gladly trade it for some Aquila if it was possible. I've never had any Aquila that didn't fire. The last time I shot Winchester I had 2 out of 20 rounds that wouldn't fire, even after I gave them half a turn and tried them again.

I like Aguila .22 ammo so where did you find those for " a couple cents
a round"? A dollar a box, ten bucks a brick? You sure?

Yes, I’m sure, and NO, I’m not divulging my source. Considering how lousy most here seem to think this ammo is, why should I?

Hey you can tell me! I don't think it's lousy ammo. I bought a case for
$180.00 shipped a few months ago before this virus panic and thought
it was a great deal. I have chronographed a lot of .22 ammo over the
last several years and Aguila shows better quality control with lower
extreme spreads than any domestic brand including CCI. The 40 gr
plated RN high velocity stuff is the classic .22 LR ctg.

Agreed, I have no problem with the ammo's performance. I've shot it in everything from semi auto pistols to bolt action rifles without problem.

I like that Aguila stuff you have. Both the copper plated and the lead round nose.
To me they smell like burning plastic.
On a side note: I have to ask myself how much ammo I need to "horde". Don't get me wrong. I have my prudent reserve. And sometimes I like to go out and blast away half of a brick at a tin can on a hillside. But if I shoot more deliberately a box or two of 50 is plenty for a practice session.
If things dried up I could make my stash last a good while. As long as I didn't go out and knurl the earth too often.

A couple of years ago, I used two good quality .22 rifles and fired five, five-shot groups at 50 yards with at least twenty-five ammos. None of these were expensive; all were of the type and in the price range most non-competitive shooters would use regularly. This included some of the real cheap, "bulk" ammos, too.
I've always favored CCI-SV for rifles and handguns because it generally shoots pretty well in everything. Five, five-shot groups from both rifles averaged .67". Aguila SV (non-plated) averaged .83" and Aguila HV (plated) averaged .77". These results go along with what I've come to expect form all three ammos over the years. From an accuracy perspective for the non-competition shooter, there's nothing wrong with Aguila.
I did have a batch of Aguila SV ten or so years ago that had an unusually large number of rounds that failed to fire, but have had no such problem since with other batches of Aguila SV. I have experienced failures to function reliably in at least one or two semi-auto handguns with the SV Aguila, but don't recall such a problem with the HV version. An advantage to CCI SV is that it usually functions reliably in anything and I think the HV Aguila should be comparable in this respect.

There's this thing going around, a virus, which has placed a number of areas across the US on lockdown and it has been steadily spreading. Whether or not it will ever make it out to the boondocks, wilderness, or desert remains to be seen, but then again, perhaps it already has and nobody cares?
If you can actually go out and shoot, then by all means do so, just don't be that guy who hoards ammo just so he can sit on it or throw it into a duffel bag in the back of his closet and call himself prepared.

The smell is the the Eley primer compound.
Super extra is good ammo, for the price it is great ammo .
If folks can shoot better than it, maybe they need the real expensive stuff.

Who elected you to be everyone's Jiminy Cricket and tell them what to do or what to buy? The man already said that he goes out and shoots it, so why be a wiseacre and try to dictate to him your beliefs and values.
I guess I am on your **** list too, as I have been buying bullets, primers and powder starting since last month, in preparation for a long dry spell for reloading supplies. I was already pretty well off except for some bullets, but I had been watching what this Covid 19 was doing overseas since around January and figured I had better get a few more supplies on hand before everything dried up. Not hoarding, because everything I buy I use in reloading. And yes, my range is still open and went yesterday and shot around 450-500 rounds of 9MM, 357 and 44 Mag.

I was elected by the common sense committee and the coalition of moral order.
By the way, don't play with matches, attempt to force things into electrical outlets, run with scissors, text message while driving, drink any of the stuff under the sink, do drugs, or drive with your hand hanging out the window. Also, read scripture, take your vitamins, and brush your teeth every day.
Tune in next week where we'll discuss (among other things) why hoarding toilet paper isn't proper preparation for a virus outbreak, even if you own an outhouse out in the desert. Why no always means no. And how giving into your wife's every demand makes you a bad husband, not to mention less of a man.

I have 9 rolls of toilet paper and at least 24K rounds of .22 LR, all of it is either CCI or Aguila High and Standard Velocity 40 gr. LRN or plated RN. When I started to get into shooting it was with .22s in the midst of the .22 drought. That full bottom shelf in my ammo safe represents my comfort zone. There is another 5K of the Mexican stuff coming to replace what I will shoot this Spring. The toilet paper is double rolls of 2-ply Charmin.

While it isn’t my “go-to” choice, I’ve never had any issues with Aguila stuff.

I'm an Aguila fan. Post Newtown it was all I could find. Always goes bang and works great in all my guns except my Mosquito. Seems to have just enough less pop that it won't cycle in that one. My 10/22s LOVE the Standard Velocity.

Solid boost to my rimfire stash. This should hold me over till this virus panic and ammo shortage clears up.

My parents always kept a 1/2 gallon of Jim Beam and a fifth of Port wine under the sink. Growing up I tippled there all too often.

My .22s, or as the British say, “point two-two calibre”.

I've shot quite a bit of Aguila, of all varieties. I have never noticed a bad smell, and no, I don't think that I have contracted COVID-19.
Possibly the reason why is because I always shoot outdoors, and the wind always blows here.

Now i have this desire to see how many rolls of toilet paper a 22 can shoot through. Maby i can become an internet star like the guys with ballistic jell and meat targets. After i exhaust all the brands and varieties of 22 and toilet paper i could advance to 22 Mag and paper towels. I am sure not only be fascinating to watch, the value of lessons learned would be of great use to both the 22 and toilet paper communities.

I shoot more .22 than easily all other calibers combined. For domestic ammo CCI is the way to go. I avoid Remington and Winchester like the plague ( only way I would shoot it is if I absolutely could not find anything else or was given it for free) and would only reluctantly shoot federal. I find the aguila much better than Winchester Remington or federal, and just a hair behind CCI in quality ( perhaps a malfunction per 200 rounds where I can go a thousand per malfunction with CCI)
I recently got a great deal on Eley action from Killough shooting sports and it definitely edges out CCI standard with better accuracy and perfect function across multiple guns.
Having 3 or 4 cases of .22 in my ammo stash is critical,as I average about 300 rounds a week ( despite my club cancellation of all organized matches for the time being) but the range still open to members for shooting and several other places to shoot available. So that would average out to 3 cases of 22 ammo shot in a year, with a spare in case supply becomes an issue.
In a worst case scenario like the Obama shortages at least the foreign somewhat more expensive ammo like Eley and Lapua we’re still available if desperate.
I have always found any bulk pack stuff not worth the trouble as the increased number of malfunctions seems to grow to about 1 or 2 per 50 rounds
