Buffalo Bore vs Remington
My jug collection was getting out of hand so I decided to try out my new to me Model 66 on them. Both bullets are 158 grain lead semi wad cutter hollow points. The left one is the BB. The right is the Remington.
I shot the BB through two layers of denim and two layers of t-shirt. The Remington tends to have trouble with denim so I shot it through two layers of t-shirt only. The Remington made it to the back of the fourth jug. The BB busted the fourth jug but didn’t make it in. The BB definitely has the loudest bark and the most recoil. That being said it is to me the most likely to expand of any 38 Special +p I have seen. I would not want to be on the receiving end of either of them.
The more I shoot the Model 66 the more I like it. Y’all have a good day! Hugh

Thank you for sharing...both great loads. I like the lower recoil of the Remington version compared to the Buffalo Bore...easier to control in the J frame. I can also match Remington’s velocity, as confirmed by chronograph, with a reload making duplicate velocity practice rounds.

That is a very nice looking bullet, for being shot out of a Snub Nose !!
It is true that a 158 lead HP in these weapons need ALL the speed that they can get, to work correctly.
The price is a lot of recoil.

FWIW, the older RP's were a much softer lead - and just might have equaled those BB's for expansion. That would be an interesting experiment....

Yup that BB bullet is almost pure lead with a smidgen of tin . Which makes it mallable so it won't lose petals & no jacket to shed . That bullet will work up to 1200fps MV . Yes it's a warm load but an effective one . Cast HP at handgun speeds need to be 20 to 1 or softer , gascheck enables it to be pushed pretty good . BB also uses a good lube . Only thing is BB is pricey . If you don't cast , you can buy the same bullet & roll your own . Just pretend you're making 38-44 loads , ie 1100-1200 MV .

What would you (we) be seeing if you had put the Remington through the same denim as the BB? Does it just clog and poke through the jugs, or something else?
Thanks!

Water jugs are a very poor simulant to what bullets do in tissue. In fact the results are totally incomparable.
They will expand almost anything, penetration estimates are completely useless, it’s just utterly pointless unless your goal is to see what bullet works best for destroying water jugs.

Out of a short barrel it tends to clog up with denim and show no expansion. It will zip right through five jugs. Hugh

You would be amazed how many hollow points will not open in water jugs when shot through denim out of a short barrel. I always figured that if it will not open in water it probably won’t open in gel. I’ve been wrong before and could well be wrong now. I still enjoy blasting away at them. Not scientific but it sure is entertaining.

With an M66 snub, I would be looking at short barrel loads for the .357 Mag cartridge. Speer makes a good one. There's a lot of good info about penetration and expansion on the Lucky Gunner test site. You can find it here.
I think the jacketed options are better than the 158gr .38spl LSWCHP option, unless you absolutely have to shoot the .38spl because of the gun or recoil concerns. But the short barrel loads are typically lighter, as you'll see in the Lucky Gunner data for the Speer load.

I have a couple of boxes of the 135 grain 357 Gold Dots coming from Midway. First 357 snub I have owned and ammo has been a little scarce. It’s not supposed to arrive until late next week. Tried some 158 grain Remington 357 Magnum in it. I would be pretty slow getting a second shot off with it. Don’t want to shoot the 125 grain 357s in it so the BB 38s seem to be my best option at the moment. Making the best of what I have on hand.

Out of a 3" K frame the BB 20A 158 LSWCHPGC 38 special & the Rem GS 125 JHP 357 Mag are pretty close . I prefer the heavier lead slug as I know it will penetrate regardless of angle .

Well one thing that I learned while testing a Speer 125gr, six pedal, Gold Dot out of my M49 38 snub nose was..............
after the bullet went through four water jugs and came to stop at the particle board at the back........
besides the tiny bit of plastic inside the tip, the zero expansion bullet was in perfect shape to be reloaded again !!
