Default Ammo becoming available again

Dunhams had Blazer brass 9mm for $10.99/bx. Not bad, not great. They also had Rem. .22 shorts 2 100 ct boxes for $10. Probably not a huge market for them.

I was just at my friends gun shop yesterday and his shelves were still pretty picked over. Only one type of 9mm and not much of it. Same for 45 ACP and some calibers were AWOL.

I'm sure that there will be a glut of ammo (toilet paper too) once this madness is over, although more people may become preppers or reloaders after this drought.

Still smiling here though... reloading and casting bullets for over 50 years and not stopping yet!

The shortages and excessive prices we are experiencing now will be
pretty short lived compared to what we have seen in the past.

Online dealers like SGA have started to get most of their stock back up to where it was regarding 9mm and 5.56.

I'm in a Bullseye Pistol league, and a number of the competitors shoot High Standard pistols chambered in .22 Short. At 50' or 25 yards, Shorts are just fine. You want subsonic anyway.

It would be difficult for me to make this statement in NJ. What gun shops that are open are open by appointment and browsing traffic is discouraged. The local Bass Pro has been "temporarily closed", as has been the Cabelas in Delaware and Pennsylvania. Venturing into neighboring states is facing a mandatory 14 day self quarantine in the neighboring states if you venture off the Interstate.

My only barometer of ammo availability is the offerings made by the Sportsmans Guide, where I buy most of my ammo, if I buy ammo. What they show in stock:
Some revolver ammo, many old chamberings and some of the new monster magnums.
Mostly semi-auto ammo for the weaker or less popular semi-auto handguns.
A significant amount of rimfire ammo.

I saw both 41 and 44 Magnums at close to a buck a round. First time I saw Remington 38 Short Colt. Didn't see much, if any, 9mm, 40 S&W, or 45 ACP, but 45 GAP was listed as available, as was 32 ACP.

Some ammo was showing projected availability going into August.

I am very grateful that I reload, and am set up to cast virtually every handgun bullet that I shoot. I am also grateful that I had the foresight to purchase about six thousand 357 gas checks at auction last summer when they were offered at a great price.

Unless merchants impose an unpopular daily limit, I fear we will see extended shortages due to panic purchases/hoarding when stock starts to replenish. I hope that I am wrong!

True, a second run on ammo could happen fast near election time, depending on which way the election swings...

My guess, as the election gets closer, ammo and gun sales will explode again...

Couldn't tell you, really. I've had a sufficient supply of ammunition because I tend to buy ammo whenever I can, not just when things look bad.

The last time I went into a gun shop was to buy one of those California Highway Patrol 4006TSWs from the latest batch to hit the market, and didn't ask about ammo because I already have some which I can't even shoot right now anyway.

So yeah, instead of feeding into the mob mentality of panic-buying or "stocking up" on ammo when trouble might be on the horizon, much less when we're already in the midst of it, I just buy a box of ammo every here and there when everything is fine, leaving me with an adequate amount when/if things go wrong.

Thumbs down

SGAMMO is selling 50 rd. boxes of ammo for $5 more per box since this pandemic started. If people continue buying it at this new price it will NEVER go down in price.

They will. If people buy all the ammo the manufacturers can make prices will stay high. But eventually new gun owners and others that do not have a decent stockpile will decide they have enough for now and quit buying at today's high prices.

A lot of people buying now have a very different view of what constitutes "enough" than those of us that post here. If you think 3, 50 round boxes is a lot of ammo paying the extra $15 to make sure you have "enough" is not a big deal. The only reason prices are still high is there are a lot of them. Since they are not going to be buying thousands of rounds supply will catch up with demand unless it looks like Biden will win the election.

My guess is about 2 or 3 more months before prices come down unless politics drive the price up.

9mm ball and SD loads and .223/5.56 ball have been back in stock at my lgs for about 3 weeks now. This coincides with the drop off in local forum sales of ammo. My lgs of choice has never price-gouged but 9mm ball is $325/1000, SD loads $25-30 box/50 and 5.56 M193 is $375/1000 bulk packed so prices are up. They had 9mm for $199/1000 just before the lockdown.

I do think there will be a second wave of panic buying before the election, my state is historically blue and we have a number of anti-2a laws going into effect sometime in June/July.

Still have not seen much new ammo. Lots of .17, guess not so many people have those. Called another LGS and asked about ammo, he said he had a bunch of .44mag. He was holding back on other cals. so if you bought a gun he could add 100 rds to the deal. That is nice. Hope we see more soon.

Dunham's in our local town has plenty of ammo on the shelves. Plenty of 9mm, .223, .40, .45 scp and .38spl. Fortunately for me they have a good supply of .357mag because I'm assuming not many carry a .357 for their EDC so I get a good supply of cheap white box practice ammo but good self defense rounds are still hard to come by.

I was in a local store this weekend and their shelves were full at their normal discount prices. Also plenty of guns. They probably had the best inventory I’ve seen in a while.

I also went to Smoky Mountain Guns and Ammo which is close to where I live and they had plenty of ammo at regular prices. Their gun inventory was really low though.

I stopped by Academy today to see how it was. They'd put other merchandise on half the ammo shelves, and the other half looked pretty bleak. $22 for Federal LRN .38 Special, and only a few lonely boxes of CCI .22LR.

I spent a while today looking for .45 ACP and came up short....
even at palmetto State Armory and LuckyGunner.

FreedomMunitions screwed me so royally on a 1000rnd 223 order a while back that I'll never order from them again. Ordered 1000rnd Premium 223, they sent target practice garbage, then lied about it.

I probably have a hundred. I previously gave my son over a hundred and I now have a friend looking for some. I have a good number of 12 gauge, just not as much of the big stuff as I would like.

I've got enough 00 and slugs to level a small forest. Don't know when I'll ever get around to firing them all, and I hope it's not in the defense of me or mine.

I was just on the phone and found some about a hundred miles north of where I live. I have to go that way tomorrow for a blood test, so will buy some more. I doubt I will buy 500 as I rely on 5.56 and 30 carbine.

Been able to find 9mm, .380, .32 H&R, but other than a few assorted boxes of odd cartridges the shelves are empty. FWIW, Cabela’s has Remington 9mm for $10.99, 5 boxes per customer.

Got to the suburban store this morning and there was a line of people in the parking lot. Would have had to have stood in line for an hour just to get into the store. I ordered 100 rds online this evening for less than I would have paid had I stayed with the store.

So let's see, we have people suggesting defunding police departments, a general election, a bunch of people who want to tear up the U.S. Constitution, one week of rioting over a lot of the country and a pandemic. Last week, I had four people ask me how to "get armed up".
Do you really think ammunition prices are going back down in the immediate future?

Gun sales are still brisk in my area but the medium to large stores are well stocked on both ammo and guns.

I went to a medium size store near me last week to buy 3 bricks of 22 and there were three AR rifle sales In progress and the guy ahead of me bought 2 matching s&w M&P autos. Don’t know the model. Anyway the walls and counters were full of guns with the exception of S&W revolvers. The counter was picked almost clean. There were no J frame 38’s and all but 1 357 had been bought. There were 3 29 or 629’s there but that was it. There was more than plenty of ammo though and at regular Discount prices.

Today Academy was wiped out on ammo, except for hunting rifle ammo.

Glass handgun case was utterly empty.

Only long guns in stock were a bolt action hunting rifles.

As long as we don't have another national emergency of any kind, everything should be readily available and back to normal pricing in the late fall.

Just bought a Ruger Compact 45 ACP two days ago from Buds.....
Out for delivery tomorrow !!!

I was expecting about 2 weeks.

Does a presidential election count as a national emergency?

It could be early 2021 before prices are back to normal. If Biden wins all bets are off.

As I mentioned above, I had four people who have virtually no interest in firearms ask me how to "get armed up" last week. It was reported in the local news that a LGS had sold 25,000 rounds of 9mm in one day. By my standards, that is a boat load of ammo. IMHO, it is a bit late to apply the 6P principle.

Joe has mentioned using Beto as his gun control czar. One might wonder how gun control is going to work as a campaign issue in November. I have a feeling that it is going to be an interesting November.

Joe has mentioned using Beto as his gun control czar. One might wonder how gun control is going to work as a campaign issue in November. I have a feeling that it is going to be an interesting November.
Without getting too political, this has been a climate which pushes ammo sales.

People were worried during Covid, with long periods of low employment. People are now on edge with the increased focus on "unrest". Periods of lawlessness always scares the hell out of the middle class, you combine some disposable income with an increased fear of being attacked.
With the upcoming elections, one side always seems to look at gun control as a key issue, which also scares the crowd- I remember people buying AR's "while you could", that I never considered gun-people.

My wife got a text from one of the couples in her bible study today and they want to talk to me about buying a gun.

But there should be. I grew up shooting only .22 Shorts which at that time were somewhat cheaper than .22 LR. For fun shooting I still prefer using .22 Shorts, at least in those guns which will feed them, and I have several which will.

My favorite and choice of +P .38 Spl ammo, Speer Short Barrel 135 gr. and Remington 125 gr. Golden Saber have gone somewhere into the ether, I think.
Fortunately, I do have enough to tide me over, and sufficient components for reloading.

Went to my LGS yesterday and they were completely sold out of both hunting and self-defense ammo, and were down to very limited supplies of range ammo. Interesting times we live in...

Default I scored some 9mm Gold Dots....

Went to Palmetto Armory, had to wait about a half hour to get in the store. Very little defense ammo. So I bought a box of 20 (count 'em...20!) Gold Dots for almost 25 bucks. I got out to the car and opened the box and thought...."Pitiful".

PS: I load my own (everything) for range but for SD I prefer to use factory stuff.

Went to my fav. LGS yesterday. The had about 1/3 of their usual gun selection left. Some Specialty ammo. Spoke the owner who does the buying, he said the plants were closed down due to the kung flu. Still down, I mean he spends hours on the interwebs looking for ammo. May be some time before this changes.

My gf in Bellingham WA is in that boat. No interest in guns (but tolerates me, so that's OK) and is thinking of having a gun at home. Will be looking into training courses etc. in the fall. i've been thinking of various handguns that might be appropriate (Model 10, or a 9mm of some sort, maybe one of the M&P models) and just out of curiosity was just looking online at what suitable ammo was available. Checked Midway and Brownells. Practically zip/nada! "out of stock; no backorder". Lucky Gunner was a bit better, but mostly the pricey stuff from Buffalo Bore and Underwood.

Not urgent in her case so hopefully by the time she's ready to get into it, things may have improved. She should at least be able to get white box stuff for practice.

Went to three different small gun shops in my area yesterday, all three were very low on ammo. I ask if they knew when they would be able to get more, none of them were sure.....

The larger stores had a decent supply. ( like Point Blank Shooting Range ) but were still lower then normal in the amount of ammo available.

Was at Bi Mart, a bit of everything store. Guns & ammo too. They had just got in several cases of 5.56, .38spl. and .45 acp. I got 100 of the .45. Could have got more but didn't want to hoard.

I posted this in the Other Brands forum, will push it out over here...

Bass Pro is becoming one of my new favorites. Unlike a lot of old standby's, they have been listing some ammo at pre-covid prices. Namely, the Herter's brass 9mm, it's been listed at around 18 cents a round. They charge tax, but not shipping for now (if it's over $50). So, a case runs me $197.

They got beat up early on because of delayed shipments, but they seem to have figured it out. I ordered a case 6/22. It was loaded onto a Fedex truck on 6/23. It should be delivered in a day or so.

Just a note, to order, you have to select a store that shows stock. Turns out, that isn't a big deal. I live in La, it was out of stock near me. I changed to a store in Miss which listed "limited stock", and it let me order. Turns out that's not even relevant, because the delivery started in Utah, but hey, what the heck.

I like Sellier and Bellot 124gr better, but I'm not paying $250 a case for it, plus tax and shipping. It's range fodder.

From my perspective it seems like most ammo is pretty much available as usual, but the prices from the cheap sources seem to be creeping up (to establish a “new normal?”) but ammo is still readily available Since I’ve been able to build up my supply pretty well, now I can comparison shop and try to jump on bargains to maintain my supply status.

The old Boy Scout admonition to “Be Prepared” holds true as always.

I guess, let's look at the bigger economic picture, and predict from there.

Things were normal, ammo was available and cheap.
Covid hit, lots of owners stocked up, the toilet-paper analogy. At the same time, covid affected the domestic manufacturing, and probably seriously slowed the distribution and especially imports. So the shelves emptied and you couldn't find much, for awhile.

Things started to get back to normal, now there's a lot of civil tensions and unrest. This pushed a second run, and this time a lot of new gun buyers- the world is getting too crazy, people wanted more protection. Non-owners buying pistols; pistol owners buying rifles. Ammo for the new purchases, because you probably don't have supplies for something you didn't own.

As production and distribution return to normal in the future, let's see what the market does. I've seen speculation of a new normal price, but not everyone is playing along... Bass Pro is big. It's big because- it's big, and spread around the country. They seem to be figuring out the shipping, and I can get $200 cases from them. I liked SGAmmo, but I'm not paying $50 more just because he sends me emails.
Once we see S&B, PPU, RUAG products back alongside domestics on the shelves, I strongly think we see a return to decent prices, if closer to $190 a case instead of $160. There's a larger gun owner market now, and the playing field has been reset. Vendors are going to try to establish a spot in the chain.

Got my bass pro order in today, it took 4 days. Also got my Glodal Ordnance order in, took about 6 days to get in a case of Tula 223 and some magazines (from the Father's Day sale).

I seem to remember prior to the insanity buying ammo was scheduled to go up 10% by first of April, so I don’t expect to see 17cent 9mm anytime soon.

Also Americas biggest ammo seller(Walmart) isn’t there to keep costs down.

I would bet the reason BassPro is cheaper right now is they probably are big enough to have some long term contracts with the price locked in. Good when demand is high, bad when demand is low. SG probably buys what they can when they can. Which means their prices are going to be more volatile.

I like sgammo but like you am not going to pay extra because they had good prices in the past. I bought enough from them over the past five years I am going to sit this shortage out.

In addition to COVID and riots we have an election coming up. Discussion of gun control has drowned out by the media talking about nothing but COVID and BLM protests. But if there is a mass shooting or the murder rate keeps going up the way it has recently in some cities it will become an issue again. Which will bring on another round of shortages. I am guessing prices will return to normal in early 2021 if Trump wins. If Biden wins it could be much longer, if ever.
