Wow, you aint kidding. Just checked Natchez - exactly 2 available selections of over priced 5.56 / .223 ammo.

Glad I'm stocked up.

Funny thing is 2 local gun shops have decent availability of in demand stuff at high, but not crazy pricing. I am thinking so many people these days are so used to internet shopping they forget about the hidden away brick and mortar stores.

I drove through Southern Indiana last Tuesday. Saw a sign for a gun shop and said what the hey - let's stop and see what they have. Lots of handguns, including several revolvers and pretty much any ammo you might want. More selection than I have seen in 2-3 months anywhere. They did have a limits of 1 box of Aguila 9mm at 12.99 and Fiocchi .380 at 15.99. Also picked up 2 boxes of 40SW at 17.99 per box. Had a nice 4006 but I am looking for at 4013. Nice find overall!

We have ever tightening regulation by local, state, and federal governments.
We have a pandemic that threatens the supply of food and toilet paper.*
We have civil unrest and violence in the streets.

This is the trifecta for shortages of ammo and firearms, which leads to much higher prices when you find ammo and firearms for sale.

* Toilet paper? I would have never guessed in a million years that people would be willing to fight over toilet paper. Food and water? Certainly, but toilet paper?

Some people don’t subscribe to the Richmond Times-Distress or a similar steady source of usable TP!

Prices on GB are through the roof and pretty much all 9mm and .223/5.56 are gone locally. Armslist people are seeking a kings fortune for all calibers and gauges.

Thumbs down

I tried to buy my favorite 9mm cast, coated bullets yesterday. Everything I looked at was out of stock. Since they are still in business, I imagine they are supplying favored customers only. Some of those favored few might be able to flip the bullets for profit. Panics lead people to do unusual things.

I was in Billings, MT two days ago and stopped at Cabelas. This was their selection of handgun ammo:

This prompted me to look locally yesterday. Plenty of ammo in stock of most all calibers and prices about normal. I guess everyone around here must be all stocked up.

If you don't already have components, too late for that as well.

About two years after a prior ammo shortage I remember going into a large gun store/indoor range and seeing a pallet stacks with 500 round cases of American Eagle 5.56 at under $200 per case. My though was that things were finally returning to normal. Now I wonder when I’ll see a pallet of 5.56 at any price.

Local gun shop was selling Federal 5.56 55 grain $16 for 20 rounds.

I almost choked! Bought the same 2 years ago for $6.50.

Compared to having no ammo at all, and factoring in the price of even a used rifle, $16 is a small price to pay for the security provided by 20 rounds of 5.56.

On the other hand, and more relevant for me, at $16 for only 20 rounds, quality time at the range is now an expensive activity.

Mar 2021 should be back to normal. Unless there are "dark forces" suppressing public acquisition of ammunition. Joe

I am really glad I started taking the 22 mag more seriously after the 2008-2014 ammo crisis, because that and 17 hmr are all I would ever see left on the shelves... Just bought another few boxes yesterday.

Just built my AR in January, a buddy and I split 2 cases and we should have bought 4. Oh well. Just ordered 60 rounds of Hornady v max for $ 60 plus tax and shipping, but gotta have 'em in the truck this fall because 1 or 2 coyote pelts will pay for them. Figure I'll shoot 20 sighting in and practicing, and the remaining 40 reserve for the dogs.

This is exactly why I hoard powder , primers , bullets and reload .
This isn't the first shortage and it will not be the last...Prepare for them .
Do you know how many times you can reload a good brass case?
Reloading since 1967

I just received the Natchez August/September sale booklet in the mail yesterday 8-4-2020. Got on the site to check bullets, primers-handgun & rifle. Hardly anything in stock! Why bother sending these out and paying for printing/postage, if there's nothing in stock?

So, for s**ts and giggles I got on Cabela's website. Same thing there EXCEPT I did find some 308 ammo in stock Since I had some rewards points, I ordered 5 boxes/20 (100 rounds) Herters, Federal and Winchester. Maybe not a great deal, but free shipping and with tax, $83.55. 150 & 180 gr. Soft Points. Did I need them? No. But I'll have them, just in case....

Having ammo shortage problems ?

Lee Hand Press Kit .....$53.99
Lee Pro Carbide 3-die set (9mm Luger / 45 acp).....$29.99

Cost (excluding powder, primers & bullets)
for tools to start reloading......$83.98

Lee will mail you a free catalog or visit their website.

Think About It .

I reload all my handgun ammo (32acp to 45 Colt) and 30-30 rifle with this set up .
A double cavity Lee mould ($21.99) and you can manufacture bullets .
Pick up all your empty brass ...while you're thinking about it !

Ran into some 9mm at Sportmans Warehouse today, they had Aguila, Blazer Brass and Federal all in 115.

Didn’t really need it but it was there and I had a rewards certificate so I picked up some of the Federal.

Sales guy said it’s the first 9mm they have seen in weeks.

Makes no sense. If they are still making ammo, but nobody has any for sale, where the heck is it?

Same as before........people are hoarding it. Some folks call it stockpiling.

Not a reloader, but I think components are coming back some.

I ordered a case of reload range ammo from Fenix Arms in May, it was delayed a while. Emails told me they were behind on components, would ship when they got caught up. It came in Tuesday. So they were a couple months behind, and currently not taking orders at this time.

Not real sure how that translates to the current market, other than some things are slowly shipping.

When you have ammo , it's having a supply aka stockpiling .

When the other guy has ammo , and you don't, then
it's called ..."Hoarding"... Now that's Funny !

What you call it depends directly on how much ammo you have .

Hoarder since 2013

I literally just began reloading .223 this year. Glad I did. Also ordered another 1000 9MM bullets. I think I’m gonna start to seriously start stocking up in components. I used to think having 3000 primers was a good amount. I’m good to get me through this nonsense but after it passes I’m gonna start stocking up big time. The 2000 .223 bullets I have just doesn’t seem like a lot anymore.

I know I'm repeating myself, but those of us who were around following the Sandy Hook tragedy have seen this before. We've had years, the last three in particular, (prior to spring of 2020), when guns & ammo were readily available and reasonably priced. Nothing lasts forever, empty ammo shelves and gun showcases being the evidence. Question is, will things return to "normal" this time.

I've got a pretty good supply of factory 223/556 stored back, but I thought I'd better try reloading some. I had not done that in a spell. Good thing I did; I had plumb forgotten how much extra work there is in prepping 223/556 cases as compared to straight wall pistol cartridges. Wow: trimming to spec., swaging primer pockets, lubing and resizing with a small base Lee die. Been 30 years or more. Had to basically relearn everything; so I am now better prepared, and now know I can reload tolerable shootable 223/556.

I remember buying .22 Shorts for 30 cents per box of 50, Long Rifle were 33 cents a box for 50.
Sounds great.
But I had to pay three silver dimes for that box of Shorts. And there were a lot of things I could buy for three silver dimes in them days.
The price is the price. If you think too high, don't buy.
Better yet, reload.
What I can load a Krag round for with a cast bullet is a far cry from what factory will cost me. If I can find it.

Most of this shortage has, up to this point, been non-rimfire ammo. Our locals however have advised they were told there may not be any coming for some time. A check of some of the major distributors indicate that only match ammo is for sale and it is running 15 cents or so per round.
If you need it and you can find it, grab it.

There's ammo out there if you look. I scored a case of 5000 small pistol primers today. You just got to be at the store when they get them in. Walmarts around here have 22 rimfire.

The big box stores in the area are low on ammo. We have a couple of small gun shops also and they have ammo.

I was in a small shop in SW Washington yesterday to buy a complete lower and also picked up:

3 X 20 rounds 200 gr 10mm Speer Gold Dot @ $21.99
2 X 20 rounds 175 gr 10mm Winchester Silver Tip @ $17.99
4 20 rounds 55 gr 5.56 American Eagle @ $10.99
They had 9mm and most other calibers, except 300 blackout.

The local Sportsman’s Warehouses, Cabelas, etc were picked clean.

I would have bought more but they take hoarding seriously.

Yeah, but that was also ~20 years ago, when AIM had 7.62x51 for $149/1k case, shipped.

Default 7.62x39??

I have wandering taste in firearms and bought an AK a few months before the COVID plague. I never got to shoot it but have picked up some cheap Tul ammunition before the panic buying began. I've been watching its availability at one LGS and to my surprise Russian steelcase Tul 7.62x39 is relatively plentiful while everything else has disappeared. Counterintuitive. I would have thought preppers and doomsday hoarders would hoard AK ammo. Have the Russians flooded us with ammunition? That would be red meat for the conspiracy theorists.

I went to two of my local stores today and both had more ammo that I’d seen in a while. Their gun inventory was improving as well. Still loading components continue to be in short supply particularly primers.

I was at our everything store today, a guy had like 25 boxes of .223 in the check out line. But 9mm was in short supply.

Maybe not for you, me, or AJ but for others, this is true for SURE.
In addition to around 1500 factory rounds I only have 1000 .223 55gr SPBT bullets to be reloaded
I'm buying 1000 .223 75gr HPBT bullets from a guy liquidating his deceased buddy's reloading stuff for the widow. I'm giving him $100 for 1000 of them and feel like I'm getting a bargain.
I went online to AmmoSeek and searched for .223 bullets and the cheapest thing I found was 40gr pills for 23 cents each PLUS shipping!
That is NUTS! The 1000 55 gr I mentioned above were just under 6 cents apiece pre-COVID/pre-riots.

Here’re the ammo shelves at the Portland Cabelas. The Sportsman’s Warehouse in Longview is the same. I have better luck at small shops. I have a honey hole where I’ve recently picked up .357, 10mm, 45 acp and 5.56.

Yesterday I was in a gunshop, had an extra $100 to blow on ammo, and picked up 2 boxes of 9mm at $14.42/box, a box of .357 at $26.42/box and 2 boxes of .30-30 at $18.82/box. Blazer brass 9mm, Federal .357 & 30-30.
