Default Underwood ammo

Underwood ammo will not feed in most of my guns. They all have at least 500 rounds of other types of ammo through them with no problems. It jambs open the slides almost every time. The feed ramps has been polished with no relief of the problem. Same problem with four different calibers. I purchased the ammo direct from Underwood and they will not honor my problem, just full of excuses. I would never trust Underwood ammo in a life threatening situation.

This is posted in the incorrect forum.

Your first post is a complaint?

I personally have never had a problem with Underwood ammo. I have a Sig P250sc .40 S&W on me now loaded with Underwood 200 grain hard cast ammo.

Underwood makes some of the best ammo on the market, especially their magnum stuff and their 10mm stuff.

I've never had an issue. Always top quality.

What caliber? 10mm?

Underwood loads its 10mm hot. Hotter than most other 10mm unless you reload or buy from Buffalo Bore. About the 150-200 fps faster than what the original Norma ammo actually delivered and even a little faster than Norma's original marketing numbers. I suspect it is actually +P in a caliber without a +P spec.

This is great if you are looking for something strong to carry in the woods and your gun works well with it. But quite a few people need to put stronger springs in their guns and magazines or make other changes before it works well for them.

I tried some Underwood 147 grain +P with coated hard cast bullets in my Glock 43 which has been 100% reliable with all other types of factory ammo and got a feed jam once every magazine or two. The combination of the increased slide velocity and bullet shape didn't agree with that gun. Cast bullets in a stock Glock barrel are not recommended but a small amount of coated hard cast ones should not be a problem according to Buffalo Bore and Underwood.

Underwood does make high quality ammunition but test it to make sure it works in your gun before you rely on it. I carry Underwood ammo in my S&W 69 revolver on the rare occasions I carry it in the woods and it shoots great.

It would be most helpful if the OP would return and let us know which caliber(s) and which firearms are at issue.

I'm curious too. My limited experience with underwood has been in 10mm with a Glock G40. No hiccups so far and seems to be good stuff.
Both Buffalo Bore and Garrett, along with Underwood seem to be premium stuff, which you pay for.

I shoot the .45 ACP out of a 625 or 325TR so no problems, but it is hot and it does impart a thump to the hand.

My H&K VP9 eats Underwood 9mm 147 grn +P+ Gold-Dot type 100% and is my carry and duty ammo.

147 Grn Bullet at 1175 FPS is .357Sig territory. I am a fan of 357 sig but can't carry it on duty at security job, only .38 Spl revolver with 3, 4, 5, or 6in barrel (no 357 Mag chambered guns) or 9mm Parabellum autos with 3.5 to 5in barrels and be DA/SA, DAO, or striker fired.

Not to hijack but do you carry as EMT and security? Your carry requirements seem a little odd to me.

Armed security and reserve PD.

I wasn't allowed as a paramedic to carry concealed on duty, but most of us did due to location. (West and SW B'ham)

ETA: Security job is a county position and training, quals, and policy is set by the Sheriff's Department Training staff.

What guns are we talking about here. Do you own only Hi-Points and Taurus? Underwood ammo works great in all my firearms.

Well, let's see,
Joins and makes one post same day specifically (obviously) to bad mouth a specific brand of ammunition with a ridiculous premise that it won't work in any (ok, most) of his guns of any caliber. No information in the profile! I know a troll when I see one, why can't anyone else and why do so many keep posting replies to this BS post????

I've never used Underwood on account of the fact that it's expensive ammo which has a tendency of being loaded very hot, sometimes in excess of SAAMI Specs, and in some cases uses exotic projectiles of unusual shape.

Semiautomatic Pistols can be finicky in terms of reliability once you step outside of the ordinary in terms of ammunition. Ammunition that is loaded hot or with unusual projectiles tends to be less reliable.
In addition, this is why I never buy SD ammo in large quantities, no matter how low the sale price may be until I have confirmed that it functions reliably in my firearms.

Holy Smokes, you're calling him out for complaining?

OP, you did the right thing: you tested a load for functional
reliability in your defense firearm. In this case, you found
the ammunition and firearm incompatible.

You have a couple of options, for the remaining rounds.

You can keep a few, to 'salt' your magazines with deliberate
malfunctions--for use on range, for training purposes (or
training porpoises, if you work at SeaWorld).

You can SELL the remaining ammo. These days, you can
likely make your entire purchase price, shipping & tax back...
and more.

Actually...if you wait another month, you can probably make
a LOT more than what you paid.

I'm with Steve on this one.

Honestly, a new guy posts a thread because he's having a problem with ammo on a subforum devoted to ammo, yet everyone automatically assumes that he's a drive-by troll?
Besides, maybe it's because I'm not a fan of Underwood ammo, but I fail to see how his post was offensive or inflammatory. So if he did indeed come here with the intent of trolling, then he certainly played it rather low-key and didn't have to try very hard to get the results he was looking for.

I think I just figured out what everyone's favorite brand is here on the ammo subforum though. I guess I had better be cautious about saying anything negative about Underwood here, lest I be labeled a troll, assuming I haven't already been for doubting it's infallible reliability.

It isn't what he said...it is the fact that he didn't deliver any facts to back up his claim...

How about "I have the following guns and tried the following types of Underwood ammo in them and they...."

How about some pics of the jams... How about a cut and paste of the response from Underwood...

Instead he registers, nothing in his profile, and makes a claim that he doesn't back up in his first post...not a good way to introduce yourself...

I had some over pressure Underwood 10mm ammo. It was running 100 fps faster than what the box said it should and was badly bulging cases when shot in a G40. Sent the pics to Underwood and they sent a return sticker and once they had the ammo back sent new replacements that were back to their specs...

You can say anything about a product you want...but back it up, don't just make a statement...

Bob

I love the Underwood heavy 44 special 255 grain LSWC. Velocity is as advertised and it is clean and very accurate. Maybe OP just has a wonky gun?

That is exactly what I carry in my M69 an agree with your assessment. But shooting a heavy 44 special load in a 44 magnum revolver is not a problem. And I really like how it shoots.

But if the OP has a 10mm things are different. Look at the reviews for it and in forums for 10mm fans. It works fine in some guns. But a lot of people have to switch to a stronger recoil spring. And even after they do that they sometimes install stronger magazine springs because the slide is moving so fast it will not pick up the next round. And some install a buffer so that fast moving slide doesn't batter the frame going forward. In short, the same sort of changes made converting a 45 ACP to shoot 45 Super. This is usually blamed on manufacturers not building their guns to handle "real" 10mm. But I suspect the actual problem is they build their guns around SAAMI spec ammo and Underwood is hotter than what SAAMI allows.

I only have experience with Underwood ammo in .38 Super and 10MM. The ammo was/is reliable in my Colt, Kimber and STI .38 Supers and my 10MM S&W semi-auto pistol and Ruger revolver. Rather than being overly hot, the Underwood I've used chronographs a bit under advertised specs in my guns. The Underwood 10MM 165 grain FMJ is advertised at 1400 FPS. Using this ammo, expended cases almost fall out of the chambers of my Ruger GP100.

BTW, I recently ordered some Underwood from Midway, expecting to have it in a couple weeks or so given our current run on ammo. I had it within 3 days...

I am a few days late with this post but.....my 2 cents is offered.

I have shot a couple of thousand rounds through all of my handguns (23 at the moment). 9mm, 357 Sig, 40 S&W, 45 acp, 39 Spcl, 357 magnum, 44 spcl and 44 Magnum.

I have never had a failure or and other problem with the ammo. Very accurate and very reliable for me.

Currently I carry it in mt Glock 32 357 Sig (dang I used to be a Gluck hater...lol) 125 gr bonded. This stuff shoots like a dream.

I had some Xtreme Defender and Xtreme PenetrAtor, but have shot it up and then the shortage has wiped it off the shelves....oh, well.

I think that the only guns I do not carry it in is my two Shield 45s, but that is because I had/have a large supply of Federal HST 230 grain.

I trust Underwood to do the job! I guess you can say that I like it a lot!

The OP has not returned to the forums since his one and only post, bashing a product. I think this was a drive-by, bash a product, troll post. Just my opinion.

Interesting that the OP seems to have achieved the opposite of his probable goal. He brought up the name of an ammo maker I haven’t yet tried, and although he bad-mouthed it, a lot of us are now more familiar with the name and have heard a lot of Positive testimonials from its supporters. I hope he’s proud of himself!

I have shot a lot of Underwood ammunition and never have had any problems not to say that problems can not occur. On one of my orders in 2018 a box of 38 special was not received with the order but the shipping invoice indicated it had. I phoned Underwood the next day and explained the findings or lack of. No problem the lady asked some information about different manufacturing numbers from the boxes received, and said she would be happy to ship the missing box out that very day. Hope you resolve whatever issues either with the ammo or firearm but Underwood is excellent with customer service in my experience with them. Cheers

I am another satisfied customer with Underwood.Lots of 10mm in a long slide Glock and the 44 special is a great grouping gap between 44 special and 44 magnum. I also like the 380 hot loads with the heavi for caliber bullets in my Beretta 85. I do not recommend the 380 loads for most of the 380 pistols. It needs a heavier frame for comfort.
