Default Primers - the key to the ammo drought?

The young fella who works at the range says lack of primers is why there’s an ammo shortage. First I’ve heard that. Does it make sense? Increased demand just makes it worse.

I can’t find small pistol primers, so maybe there’s a strategic material in them whose supply line got Corona’d.

I don’t think there’s a shortage of materials, I just don’t think they can keep up with demand. Bullets and powder seem to be getting more plentiful from what I’ve seen so hopefully primers will become more readily available soon.

I recieved a email form Fort Scott's ammunition. That they would by primers and pay for shipping, so they would be able to continue to make ammunition. I guess I gave the company my email. They must be desperate if they are trying to primers from their customers.

Got some Remington 2 1/2 LPP at Grafs yesterday. Like with all other primers, you gotta just keep trying.

I've heard 2 ammo manufacturers in the Carolinas both say that primers are why they can't produce. Lady at Defender Ammo in Fayetteville NC told one of her dealers they had over 5 million primers on back order and no idea when they will come in. So far they are getting partials. Precision One Ammo is supposed to be in the same boat

I ain't giving any away, or looking to sell any either, though I did sell one brick each of small and large pistol primers for $25 a brick to a new reloader recently, just because he couldn't find any anywhere locally.

Interesting. I bought a brick of magnum SPP back in March but it has been six or seven years since I last bought primers. The Mag SPP were for a "special" 357 load and I have used about a third of them.

As far as the rest of my primer inventory I noticed the primers I am using have a price tag of $22.95 a brick.

IIRC we went through a primer shortage in 2008.

From what I've been seeing recently it seems I may have to start hoarding Shotgun primers. Did some of that with Pistol and Rifle primers after Sandy Hook so I'm pretty set on that side of the equation. Problem is that I haven't done any hoarding of shotgun primers and last weekend I shot 14 rounds of Skeet. Good news is that primers are available right now but buying a box when I open my spare won't cut it.

In the past panic days, shotgun primers were always available. With the popularity of 9mm ammo, the worst shortage is with small pistol primers. Way before COVID-19, maybe a year ago, Winchester had a rebate on primers, so fortunately, I ordered more than usual and am well positioned, especially now that I am not shooting. Before the virus, I was shooting at an indoor range around 200 rounds of mostly 9mm once a week.

In desperation , the wholesalers of components starting importing foreign primers years ago . For several years I shot " Tula " from Russia . They worked fairly well . I remember only having 4 duds out of a box of 1000 spp's and I shot several thousands of them . I had one bad primer in LP . I also remember Sellers and Beloit , Wolf etc . Maybe it's about time we had them again . Regards Paul
