Back in the 90ís, when ammo was everywhere and cheap, almost every gun I took off the streets or saw somebody else taken off the streets was loaded with a less than full magazine and all different brand, weight, and ammo type. A $1500 on the street price Glock 17 would be loaded with 8 rounds of brass, aluminum, and steel cased ammo. Always wondered why. You could walk into a Dickís Sporting Goods and buy a box of ammo for 9 bucks. Always just chalked it up to how stupid and lazy criminals are.

Several years ago, I was in a friend's (sadly deceased) gun shop when two young gentlemen came in asking for ammo just before closing time. My friend, Bill, asked, "What caliber do you need?"

"Uh,... it's for a revolver," said the spokesman.

"Great. What caliber is it?"

One of them went to their car and brought in a paper bag containing said revolver.
Bill reached in and pulled out an old, "finish challenged" Iver Johnson 5 shot top-break in .38 S&W with a 5 inch barrel.

He gave it a once over and set it on the counter before getting a box of Remington ammo off the shelf. "That'll be $36.95 plus tax," he said.

"But we only need enough to fill it up. How much for just five bullets?" the spokesman asked.

"$36.95 plus tax. I don't break boxes. On the other hand, I'll give you $50.00 for your revolver right now."

The young gentlemen talked it over sotto voce and decided to take the $50.00. Bill gave them cash and after they left put the IJ in his office.

He came out and said he'd call the police in the morning.
I asked him why he gave them $50.00 for what may have been a stolen gun.

I'll never forget what he said. "I may have saved someone's life tonight. Theirs or someone else's. I figure that's worth fifty bucks."

Apparently it was never reported stolen because the next week it was among the used guns tagged for $110.00.

Yeah, but, if you REALLY need a gun, you'd better have one.

This was my experience as well. 99% of all guns had mix ammo.

Once or twice I found someone with a spare mag, also with mix ammo.

While it's true there ARE some highly proficient street criminals they are in general few and far between.

One of my good shooting friends was retired and working in the fine guns department at Cabela’s about ten years ago. Several gang bangers calmly walked into the ammo aisle and pulled out their guns, loaded them to capacity and calmly walked out. The store employees were trained to not interfere when these kind of instances occurred.

I find it ironic that criminals aren't required to have " Gun Permits" but I will be prosecuted and my gun confiscated if I defend myself and don't have the "Permit" ... the criminal is never charged with no permit .

Take away my right to defend myself and take away the police ...how is this helping me stay alive .... Splain it to me Nancy

If every criminal who used a gun was required to pay a permit fee, or required to work it off, we could use that money for some of the democrats' pet projects.

Anyone know the “street price” for ammo.

Even if $10 per round that would be peanuts to a criminal with a bent to commit mayhem and murder.

The Supreme Court ruled that felons were not required to register their guns (or by extension to get gun licenses) because it would violate their right under the 5th Amendment against self-incrimination since possession of a firearm by a felon is prohibited.

There are a lot of things criminals are not supposed to have. Guns, ammo, meth, various other drugs, opioids, cars, sex with the unwilling, you name it. My friends and I do not make a living because intelligent people make good decisions.

I'm sure the drug cartels are also smuggling in guns and ammo to supply the gangs that do the distribution and sales. Endless supply from governments in Asia, eastern Europe and South America that are starved for the hard currency they can get from the cartels.

I'm surprised that no one's mentioned this: the ammunition doesn't get beamed from factory to the LGS. It gets transported to distributors who then move it to retail dealers. There's room for "shrinkage" at every step. Not to mention hijacking truckloads.
