Default Old 50 Round 22LR ammo box....

Went shooting with a buddy of mine and he pulls out this...

Apparently he had some old ammo from his grandpa (long since passed away). Stuff worked fine.

I’ve still got 12 full boxes of that.

Some of my old stash, heck look at the box it’s stored in, how long since flash cubes were a thing?

They are not that old, 1970s. Mohawk was a promotional brand sold by discount stores, etc. Also came in similar red boxes.

Several years ago I decided to shoot up some old 22 LR that I got after my grandmother passed away. It was ammo purchased by my grandfather and he died in 1966, so I wasn't real sure what to expect. Not only did every round go off but all of it was much more accurate than any of the new stuff I shot.

I remember as a kid I sent many rounds of Mohawk down range in my Remington model 33 rifle. Western Auto stores sold them. 50 cents a box.

Yep, same here, even got mine at Western Auto. However, I shot mine out of a M77 Winchester.

I still have a few boxes of 22s and some Mohawk 12 ga. #4s. A couple of years ago, I grabbed a partial box to test shoot a new to me shotgun and fired a few rounds. when I went to pick up my trash, I found a few of the shot wads. Inside the wads were a few of shot pellets that were stuck to the base of the wad. They all fired but I suspect the pattern left a little to be desired. All were purchased in the late 60s or early 70s, before I moved to Wyoming and probably bought at the local Gibson's, in my hometown.

I turned 18 early in 1974 and started buying all the 22 ammo I could find at 25 cents a box/50, it wasn't very often at 25 cents, retail ran normally around 79 cents. But one store considered ammo a seasonal item, so the markdowns began at labor day with 10% off. It had to be all gone by Thanksgiving, for the Christmas toys! Around mid October it was 75% off and on payday I would buy them out of 22,32 ACP, and 12 gauge. I have two 50 cal. ammo cans packed tight with Remington Thunderbolt and Winchester Wildcat. (About 2500 rounds a can) One of the guys has an old Anschutz model 2000 and those guns love Thunderbolt for some strange reason. (mine likes it too!) He is always begging and pleading for me to sell him a brick. Last time I sold him 500 rounds I charged him $85, they still had 83 cent price tags on the boxes, I probably paid 20 or 21 cents a box. His comment was, "Wish I had been smart enough to stock up back then!" $8.50 a box for ammo you can win a match with is cheap! (Most of the other competitors think he has boxed Eley ammo in old boxes!)

Ivan

BTW: I still have 4 or 5 boxes of Remington 32 ACP (FMJ) from 1975-76. I used to have almost 40, but people had to have it a few years ago during one of the shortages, so I am cashing in some of my retirement!

Old??
Grandpa???

I bought Mohawk ammo at Kmart back in the 70’s. It was priced below premium brands and worked fine. Loved their Flashing blue Light Specials!

I probably have a brick or two of it stashed away, but it’s too much work to dig it out. Us OLD guys shouldn’t be doing heavy lifting! IIRC, bricks of their .22’s were $5.97 on sale. That wasn’t as cheap as it sounds, since you could get a carton of cigarette’s for that money.

Back in the 1960s-70s, most states had repealed their "Fair Trade" retail pricing laws and new discount store chains appeared all over the country, almost all of which are now extinct. Target, Wal-Mart, and a few others are still around. Many of them sold guns and ammo, and frequently they put ammo on sale as loss leaders. It wasn't too difficult to find .22 LR promotional ammo for $5/brick and shotshells for around $2/box. When I lived in Fort Worth in the mid-70s, a Target store near me was the go-to place for .22 ammo. There was also a Gibson's store nearby which had a very large guns and ammo department and also carried reloading equipment and components. There are a few Gibson's stores still around, at least in Texas, and they still have guns and ammo. The only one I know of relatively near to San Antonio is in Kerrville TX which still has a large guns and ammo area, and also carries a lot of unusual items you just don't find at Wal-Mart or Target. But the cheap prices of yesteryear are long gone.

The Mohawk 22s shot as good as anything else. The Mohawk shotgun shells were good ammo too. I’ve got a lot of 22s and Center Fire ammo from 50s 60s on and only new stuff has problems.

This is the other type of the Mohawk .22 box less commonly encountered. I have several bricks.

As I was reaching middle age back in the ‘80s, I used to buy my Target 22s by the brick for $20 or less. I remember a shortage back in the ‘70s when it got hard to find and we had to pay over $100 per case of 10,000 for the cheap stuff so I could run the rifle range at a Boy Scout camp (and we needed many cases for the season... outrageous!

Back to about the mid ‘80s, RWS was breaking into the US market and I got a case of 10,000 rounds of the ammo they called “Target” for $269. Numbers like that stick to even my aging mind, otherwise “if it weren’t for flashbacks, I’d have no memory at all.”

What a flash back! I also remember buying these when I was in high school in the mid 70's. They were the budget ammo at K Mart. I spent many hours afield bird hunting with my Mossberg bolt action 16ga loaded with Mohawk shotshells. I bet if I rummaged around my workshop, I could probably find a box. There might even be a couple of shells still siting in my old hunting vests that have hanging in the barn for the last 45 years. Looking at these photos is bringing back some very fond memories.
