Default Have ammo prices finally topped out?

I have been watching local private party ammo ads.
9mm is $500-$550 per 1000 asking price
223 bulk is from .55 a round to .70 asking price.
For the most part it is not selling.
Two weeks ago it was moving but not briskly.
I am thinking that barring another national crisis event it will start to drop gradually.
I don’t know if the sellers are profiteers or folks who have figured out they over bought in the panic.
Anyone else seeing similar in their local area?

Supply and Demand. As long as someone willing to pay that price, it will stay up. I think there is still a lot of pent up demand. Speaking from Kenosha area, they are panicking and buying up everything and anything.

Saddest thing was watching a elderly couple last Saturday. I would guess late 70s. She is in a walker and they are shopping for a long gun. He was looking at a 12 ga pump with a 26” barrel. He can barely pull it up. I am sure he was buying because of the unrest.

If you want to see stupid high ammo prices check the scalpers on gunbroker.

I've seen M193 on gunbroker at $735/1000, with days to go on the auction.

Lot of people who are making large profits saw this coming plus the hoarder mindset has taken over the general population.

Yep. In order to help pay for August's 3 new acquisitions and to help replenish the Gun Fund just a little, I very reluctantly decided to put a quantity of 9mm range ammo up for sale on a local board. It sold out in 2 hours at $50/100. I guess it was considered a good deal because others were asking $60/100. Now, I am deep into seller's remorse and vowing to revamp my ammo spreadsheet format as it turned out that I had less 9mm ammo to spare than I thought I did. Oh boy!

Very bad decision on my part.

My feeling is that a week or a few days prior to Election Day the prices will spike even more.

I see up to $700 for a 1000 round case of 9mm in my area. All are trying to sell quantities versus 2-3 boxes. I did a nice deal yesterday picking up 1000 rounds 9mm trading 223 and 556. Pretty crazy prices.

yup - 100% agree
being a measure twice - cut once kinda guy who prepares for the worse and prays for the best........

Mid October thru mid Nov has potential for heightened turmoil.

Having proper resources secured and at home should be a priority for all.

Food - water - fuel - ammo - $$ - back up generator -hygiene products - radios, ect.....everything that you would need in the event of having to settle in for a short period of time.

Neighbor 2 houses down (good buddy) said that I'm fear mongering , and will later ask and take notes on what essentials to have at home.

Yep. Even if they don't riot in your town, widespread rioting has the potential to cripple the supply chain.

Side note on ammo. 9mm in the LGS's here is going for $25/box if you can find it. I've been able to consistently pick 9mm brass case ammo online for $12/box in case lots. When you decide you need it, you need to look for it a couple times a day. It sells out fast.

I've had my best luck with BassPro Herter's ammo. Probably see it available online every couple weeks or so. This week I picked up 1,000 rounds of MagTech from Brownells at $12/box. You have to look often and buy it when you see it.

Lots of 12 gauge out there. Granted, it's bird shot. But #4 steel or lead will make anybody hesitate before coming through a door or window.

Local shop across the state line advertise their 9mm on Facebook ad for $30/50 rounds and they sell out.

My local shop said the price at a gun show locally last weekend had the priced at $50/50.

Going higher than I ever expected.

People are expecting riots and mayhem after the election. I don't think this frenzy will slow down soon.

I see no reason (as in none, nada, sweet FA) to believe that the result of Nov 3 will create the conditions for riots, whichever way it goes.

As long as the shelves are bare, the prices will remain high. I doubt we've seen the worst of it yet.

So many online vendors are completely out of practically everything. It won't be getting better for quite some time. Count on it!

Learned my lesson during the last ammo shortage episode when I found myself completely out of primers for reloading and had to pay a scalper's price for my needs. Past couple of years I have been purchasing 1-2 thousand primers and 1-2 lbs. powder every month, as available, so I am able to do what I want without great concern.

Of course, all that could change at the drop of a ballot box. Not very much any of us can do about it right now.

My best prices/deals came during BO years, after previous panic subsided. Time to take a deep breath folks. Seriously, those who panic create their own shortages and no amount of finger-pointing changes that fact.

Case of 9mm sold in Austin area in under 6 hours posted for $750 two days ago. I have seen asking prices of up to $1 per round for 9mm start right after that.

I pray that the people who are so scared that they will pay this price will remember on election day why they are scared and which Party put them in this position!

I was in a local shop and a gentleman asked the owner about ammo or the lack thereof. The owner said he had a "good bit" of 357Sig, not a lot of anything else. The gentleman asked for 2 boxes of the 357Sig. After paying, he casually said to the owner,
"You wouldn't have any 357 guns would you"? The owner sold him a used M&P 357.

As far as quantity on hand goes, the old saying is:
There is ammo and no ammo. There never is too
much ammo.

Besides, it sits on the shelf and doesn't eat much.

I was in a HUGE gun shop Friday who had some 9mm for $26.95/box. The clerk said it was going for $50/box in Nashville and $100/box in Illinois. Now, is that true? I couldn't tell you, but thats what he said.

The other week I paid 90¢ per round for a case of .38 FMJ. I am a new gun owner and am scared by the well-equipped but un-regulated militias that one party has already encouraged.
This Ammo Forum is getting political.

I hope that you are right but if you have watched television or read the paper, you have seen riots, fires, destruction of property for no real reason except to show their disregard for authority and to disrupt the flow of our everyday life. You have also seen the weakness in some of our city, county governments. Some have not allowed the police to do their job but instead have supporting the rioters. What is to prevent the situation from getting worse unless the Feds take a hard stand? If the riots get worse and the Feds do not stop them, someone will and it will not be a good situation for either group. The Election will probably be protested and either way that it ends will more than likely cause more protests and riots. I hope that I am wrong.

Prices have not yet topped out, if local and online prices are any indicator.

Sadly, I do think you are right...I say we will see $60 to 70/box of 9mm before it will come down.

There will be those who have not bought and they will not buy cases of ammo. They are more than willing to pay that price for 2 or 3 boxes at a time.

I am kind of surprised some store hasn't started selling it by the round instead of by the box. At current prices a lot of new gun owners would probably opt to buy just enough to fill up a magazine instead of buying the whole box.

At AmmoSeek I just saw good FMJ brass .40 S&W for $28/Box of 50. I do not see it going up past $40/Box

9mm is selling according to AmmoSeek at about $1.00 per round ($50 per Box). I find that surprising but accept it as true.

It's amazing to think that 9mm fmj has climbed to $1 a rd.

I picked up a case of Gold Dot 124gr JHP for $399.90 in the end of May. A full case of 1k. And I wouldn't have done that, except for the feelings that are fueling this panic buying. I thought it was a good deal, but I never dreamed just how good it's turned out to be.

They're kinda are doing that around here. One dealer I visited is selling sandwich baggies of 9mm range ammo with 25 rounds each... and customers are snapping them right up. It's crazy to watch. Looks like some weird drug deal going down.

Shop owner said he was able to get hold of some bulk 9mm so this is how he is dishing it out for his established customers. I didn't catch the price, but I'm sure it wasn't cheap.

It's definitely gone crazy. Ammo has turned into gold right now. I have a bit over 100 rds of .40 S&W and 50 rds of .38 Special, and I don't even own a gun in either caliber. I was going to work a trade, but now I'm more inclined to find a gun that will eat them.

If nothing else, this is evidence against the "get one caliber" philosophy. 9mm usually is cheaper, but it's not right now. And it's not available.

Yes, I have seen the news and media recently, and they have done a first class job in blowing the unrest out of all proportion. Remember their agenda, and remember that a well run, peaceful protest is not going to make news. Neither is there much reporting from towns and cities where the population just shrugged and got on with life.

Just back from my local Cabela’s ...

SCORE!

500 round pack of WWB for $119.99 (I’m not low, but these days I’ll take $12/box whenever I can find it)

They were moving fast. I arrived about 20 minutes after they opened, and feel fortunate to have gotten my hands on one. It wasn’t what I went in for, but once I saw the (quickly dwindling) stack ... it became what I was after. People were standing around with a box under one arm and their phones out talking to friends/family telling them to hurry up if they wanted any. I’ll wager it was all gone by the time I left the parking lot.

Unfortunately, they didn’t have any of the .45LC that I went in looking for in the first place.

Fortunately (for my wallet’s sake) they didn’t have anything in the S&W used revolver case that caught my eye either.

My cousin bought his wife a S&W .380 EZ for Christmas a few years ago. I sold a Bersa .380 a few months ago. Seeing I didn't need any .380 ammo I gave 5 (50 rd.) boxes of Winchester Ranger T-Series ammo to them.

It's starting to look like 50 Beauwolf for $1.50 to $3.00 is a good deal and available several places. I only have 24 rounds for the gun I got last week.

Ammoman.com is selling mixed ammo packaged in sandwich bags (floor sweepings). Primarily because he has nothing else to offer.

Things are still looking crazy. I have always loved Outdoor Limited for ammo, but no more. The stuff they have in stock is at gouging prices. $80 for a box of PMC .380 FMJ ammo! A buck a round for generic .38 SPL. They're dead to me now.

I don't think I will need any ammo for the next week or two but when I run out I hope there is some available and I don't care if is priced at what some are calling gouging. I had rather spend my money on ammo than go to a fancy restaurant and flush it down the toilet the next day. That kind of thinking is the reason I don't think I will need to buy ammo in the next week or two. Larry

This is why I purchased a 7.62x39 upper for my AR. 7.62x39 ammo is still less than crazy, and available online. If that fails, I have an AK. Because, you know, you chamber a small mouse, it will still go bang.
