A buddy bought three boxes of 357 Sig thinking they were revolver rounds.
He was remorseful on his discovery.
I pointed out That as that rounds usage is diminishing, it could be in the long run a good deal as they will become scarcer.
Other than USSS. What agencies use said round?

VA State Police uses the .357 SIG. Nothing really scarce about them.

I believe the US Air Marshal Service uses them in their Sig P229s. Not sure if that's still the case.

FWIW, the US Secret Service recently made the switch to Glock 9mms.

There are probably some local and/or state agencies that still issue it.

357 Sig isn't going anywhere. Just because agencies don't issue it that much has nothing to do with it diminishing in use overall. I'm still waiting for the 40S&W to die and become extinct like the "experts" have been predicting for over a decade...

After giving it some thought, I'm not sure if .357Sig and .40S&W are really in decline, or if the rise in popularity of 9mm is just overshadowing them. Either way, I don't think they're obsolete. They're still good cartridges and worth consideration. 9mm meets my needs/wants, but I think it'd be nice to have a .357Sig/.40S&W Sig P229. Now that I think about it (...dangerous, I know...), I wonder if there's a .357Sig conversion barrel for the Beretta 96.

I don't see either caliber going the way of .45GAP anytime soon.

The funny thing is that even if firearms chambered in .40 S&W and .357 SIG were to be completely discontinued, even then ammo would still be produced for them, so they wouldn't really "die" in the overly dramatic sense that haters assert in which you wouldn't even be able to purchase ammo for them anymore.

Seriously, if obscure cartridges which never even obtained mainstream popularity like 9x18 Ultra and 9x25 Dilon are still in production, and obsolete cartridges like .38 S&W, .38 ACP, and .30 Luger are still in production, then obviously cartridges which are still having firearms chambered for them like .40 S&W and .357 SIG, (even if only S&W and SIG respectively continue to produce them) then they aren't going anywhere.

Worst case scenario, .40 S&W and .357 SIG become specialized cartridges which predominantly see more use in Competition or other Sporting uses like .38 Super.

For what it's worth, I've noticed a significantly higher availability of 45GAP, 357 SIG, and 40S&W in stores and online lately as compared to 9MM and 38 special. The latter of which seem to be perpetually sold out at some retailers.

Bar-Sto makes or at least made a 357 conversion barrel for the Beretta 96.

Well, I guess I can add the barrel and a Beretta 96 to my wishlist.

So, I went and looked at Barsto website. 357 Sig no longer available for Beretta. Bummer.

I really wish that somebody still made .357 SIG conversion barrels for the Smith & Wesson 4006 or SW40VE, as currently those are the two .40cal pistols I own, and while I would like to get an M&P40, SIG P229 and a Taurus PT100 one of these days, (All of which have .357 SIG barrels available) my next firearm I plan to purchase is a Rossi R92, which I've been wanting for years and thankfully it seems folks aren't into Lever Action Rifles right now, so they're still available, whereas pistols are in high demand so availability is low and prices are high.

Although I have been keeping my eyes open, and if I see a good deal on some police trade-ins or something, then I still may end up getting one of those instead.

Around here the 357 Sig flies off the shelf as fast as other handgun cartridges, with the exception of 9mm.

I don't own any handguns chambered in .357 SIG or .40 S&W, and don't plan to buy one. But if I did, I would get the other caliber barrel, assuming one is available. I like having a pistol with the ability to easily switch calibers should the need arise.

I have a .357 SIG barrel for my M&P .40 and a SA XD in .357 SIG, I like the caliber quite a bit, we have a modest supply here like with .38 Super which my wife favors.

Here is my Beretta 96 with extra 357 Sig barrel. I also have a 239 Sig in 357 Sig. One thing I can remember about the ammo shortage in 2008 was it seemed like I could always find 357 Sig, so much so that I still have an abundance. I do like both 40 and 357 Sig.

I have a 357 SIG barrel for one of my 1911s. I also have 40S&W and 10mm barrels for the same gun. It was a fun project but I rarely ever shoot any of them.

I carry a Glock 32 that is 357 Sig.

Excellent Defensive round. Very Accurate. The gun also shoots 40 S&W and 9mm.

Ialso have 4 40 S&W guns that have 357 Sig and 9mm barrels.

The 9mm conversions need 9mm magazines.

With the ammo shortage I could find 40 and 357 Sig amm and stoked up, but now it is getting hard to find.

357 Sig is loud and does have a flash but not and issue for me.

I find the recoil very manageable.

For some reason when I carry 9mm I do not feel comfortable with it and mostly use it to practice/plink, but with 40 S&W and 45 ACP and especially with 357 Sig I know it will put a hurt on a perp.

KKM does runs every once in while on them. Had to be put on a list but they did make me a .357 SIG barrel for my Hi-Power.

I have a KKM .357 Sig barrel in my m+p 40 works good.

My SIG 250C came with BOTH barrels. I need to find some smaller decapping pins for my RCBS universal decapping die. The Sig brass has smaller primer holes for some reason. Have plenty of brass for both but the SIG doesnt see much use because of the smaller holes. I have Dillion carbide for it, just in case.

My only pistol in .40 S&W is a Sig P226. I bought a barrel in .357 Sig off an individual on this site. Used it once. Need to get it out and burn some powder.

By the time the .357 sig and .40 came along in the early mid-90s I was heavily into 9mm and .45s as my auto rounds ..... didn't see either being a great improvement or at least not worth the $$$$s to make a switch over of guns mags and leather.... so I let those ships sail without me............

About a decade ago I came across an "as new in box" Sig 229 with night sights and two barrels in .357sig and .40S&W with IIRC 3 maybe 4 mags for $500 out the door.

I'd owned at least one 226 in the past and still had Sig 220s and 245 .... and I never trade leather away ......... so

Added a couple more mags and a 100-150 rounds each of .357 and .40; and packed the whole lot away as my only "guns" in .357sig and .40S&W.....a few years go by, and a month or so after Sandyhook I'm in our local Dunham's........ shelves are bare except for 12 or 15 boxes of .357 Sig at about $25/50 rounds........ for the next 8 or 9 weeks I'd stop in and buy a box.

A few years later .40 seemed to bottom out and I picked up a few more boxes one at a time .........

Today I'd have a self contained stash of gun,mags ammo and leather.......but....... it was all sadly lost in a boating accident in 2016!

A quick perusal of the SAAMI chamber and cartridge diagrams indicates that simply running a .357 SIG chamber reamer into a 9 mm Parabellum barrel would convert it. The feed ramp, extractor groove and extractor would likely need work, but it looks feasible if desperation set in and no barrels were available. Magazines would be another issue, but .40 S&W mags supposedly work for .357 SIG.

I am a .357 Sig fan. I sometimes run KKM barrels in G23 & G27. Reliable operation, high precision and amazing accuracy.

Picked up a CPO P229 in .357 with a .40 barrel for a great price.
Had some Grayguns goodness and Siglite sights installed

The way I look at it, if 9mm is good at 1,000fps, it must be even better north of 1,300fps? The trade-off is magazine capacity but, .357 has flat-shooting, hard-hitting attributes.

Well they do in my Sig 250C came with 3 mags and they all work either way. First thing I did when I got it was locate 7 more mags.

I have a .40 P229 that I picked up a .357 barrel for. Really fun little round to shoot, shame that it's been completely bulldozed by the 9mm meta but even with it falling out of favor as a service caliber I don't see it vanishing completely.
