Default Date For Old Targetmaster Ammo

I was cleaning out my stash of ammo and came across this box of ammo. It looks old, but then again it may just be that the box is beat up. Anyone know what year this was made? Wonder what years there was a nickel shortage?

1942-1945 were the years that nickel was taken out of nickels. They were silver, copper and manganese during those years.

From the index number (it does not have the R prefix), it would definitely be from after WWII. The X14C lot code indicates the second half of 1950, probably September or October. Not 100% sure about the month, but it was the 14th day of the month. Nickel shortage was a result of the Korean War which started in June 1950.

I've got 10 boxes of that stuff--it shoots pretty well but my Western Super Match outshoots it every time. I'm saving that stuff for serious shooting (when there's money on the line) but I plan on shooting it all. It's way too costly to ship to the mainland and there are very few cartridge collectors hereabouts.

I have a bunch of those boxes and the brass (nickeled) that came in them (as loaded rounds, of course). I keep those and some Western Super Match segregated from my other .38 brass for exclusive use with wadcutters.
