At a local gun show today ammo prices were HIGH ‼️‼️ off brands of 9mm and .38sp $40 a box and were selling briskly

All I can find is .22 at $9-9.50 per 50. 9m/m is $40.-45 per 50. During the last .22 shortage the highest price I saw was $11. per 100 so I think this is getting serious. Larry

I live in the twin cities area. One LGS has.22lr. CCI 40 gr. on the floor for $9.99/ hundred.
In this area 40 is plentiful and still under $20/bx. 10mm lot's available along with 22mag.
Yesterday, a buddy found 5000 SPP for $250. Stulff is out there and will be again.

Just glad I'm no longer working my 'it was supposed to be fun' retirement jobs at a LGS. Those panic-buying sessions would turn you against working in retail only if looking at foreclosure and starvation.

After 10,000 phone calls a day with people asking "Do you have any 9mm?" I imagine they are all going crazy, lol

Unfortunately I've seen some prices go up with some of my distributors, so I can see where everything will get more expensive for the end user...

At least some of the panic situation is a result of people who do not buy when they can, not when they "have to". If you are not buying a case or two at a time when you find a good price, you're wrong. That's a good way to prevent being in this situation.

Ypu knpw it's gone 'over the edge' as I saw when working the panic buying sessions of a few years ago when working at the LGS when....

#1 - You haven't had a chance to use the restroom in 6 hours, and when you're making your way there, you're literally sleeve-grabbed by a customer asking "Where your C-mags at man!!??'.

#2 - The phone simply will not stop ringing. Owner, who was there doing paperwork at 0300, says it was still ringing.

#3 - You sell a ~$3000 AR rifle to a customer that wanted to see a 5.56 round. He'd never seen one.

I sold ammo at a very small show this weekend and some of the questions I fielded and comments to others I overheard were astounding. I didn't realize that one could:


1. Shoot 22 mag in a .22 LR gun but it "might be a tight fit in some guns."


2. Aluminum case Blazer has about a 50% fail to fire rate.


3. CCI Mini-mags are an off brand and one shouldn't waste money on them.


4. 30 Luger is the same as 30 Makarov. Why won't you sell the Mak to me for my Browning HP?


Sad but true conversation with a 40 something year old lady who walked up with a newly bought at the show Ruger .22 and asked exactly what ammunition she should buy for it as she didn't know anything about guns and would this be a good buy as she reached for a 5 round box of 12 gauge 00 buck?

I was in a shop that had a number of boxes of .38 Super on the shelf. Taped to the shelf was a large hand written note stating “this is NOT 38 Spl !!!”. Another place had .357 Sig with stickers on the boxes stating “Not Magnum”. Bet the clerks have some good stories behind those notes.

Smith17 - sounds like a typical gunshow during any one of our crazy panic-buying sessions.
I had been working a table during one for a dealer friend and had to take a break. Was walking around, listening and 'learning'.

Came upon a very spirited discussion, turning to heated argument about why a box of .22 LR CCI Mini-Mags could or couldn't be used in a young man's Ruger MKIII .22. At issue was the label denoting it, '.22 Long RIFLE'.
Being for a rifle, there's simply no telling what would happen!!

Moving on to a guy telling a young couple they could use .380 in their new Glock 19. It'd just require manual slide cycling after every round and is much less dangerous in a crowded household, etc.

Had to get back to the table and passing another table with various used handguns. A guy holding a S&W M65 4", priced crazily high, was showing a friend the revolver stating his Dad had used one identical to it in WWII.
(They found the stainless to be much better in the South Pacific tropical environment.)

A guy at the gun club had a gun marked 9 m/m and a box of 9 m/m Luger. He said he bought them at the same time but the gun wouldn't work. I saw 9 m/m Corto on the barrel and tried to explain 9 m/m Luger and Parabellum is the same but 9 m/m Corto, Kurz and .380 are the same and the club had .380 for sale and that is what he needed. I left and I don't know how it turned out.
This is not guns but I was fishing with a 16/0 one time and some young people came by and one said look at the size of that reel. Another said that's nothing I saw one bigger than that. It made me feel bad and hurt my feelings because that was the biggest I had ever saw. Larry

This ^^^^^, except i was recently able to buy .380 at .36/round, and 38 spec at .38/round. I will shoot the 380 and use the 38 spec for trade (if needed).

Ammo is scarce to find, and so it sells at a premium when you find it. As long as 10+ people want to buy the 1 box you have available, that will remain.

Once people "have enough", the supply will eventually catch up and fill shelves again, and then prices will drop. I've got what I want/need, and have seriously cut back on recreational shooting for now.

Maybe... But times aren't the same, the past may have no effect on what is coming next. Its a brave new world.

After a month of nothing my local Sportmans Warehouse got some 9mm in today. $16.99 a box for Federal 115 and Winchester WB 115, $15.99 for Geco 115. Also had a little .223 at $450/1000 and $10.99/20.

$4 a box more expensive for the 9mm than it was a month ago. I passed as it’s too much for me and I’m happy with what I have but it was moving quick.

I did score a box of .243Win.

The same Remington .44 spl wheelgun ammo I paid $24 a box/50 for last month (mostly to get some more brass) is now $50-70 a box online, scary

OK, I am going to ask. How many of you desperately buying any ammo you can find are actually going shooting at the moment.

I've made a gamble, short term it's kinda pricey, long term who knows...

I have a bunch of 9mm pistols, so I converted my 9mm Norinco Tokarev "back" to the native 7.62x25. I say "back", because my specific model is the version where they simply dropped a 9mm barrel in it and called it a day. All standard/surplus Tok stuff, mags etc, fit, and btw ran 9mm fine. The rounds weren't flush with 9mm in the mag, but they'd feed.

I picked up a small stash of tok ammo, not at a brilliant deal, above what they used to go for, above what 9mm used to go for, but a fair bit below what 9mm now goes for.

I know, I missed out on the original surplus ammo deals, but the benefits of having an obscure caliber with an established market presence seemed like a good move. We might see more surplus pop up at inflated, but still reasonable prices compared to the more in-demand stuff. Overall a small investment, in order to expand the options of purchasing some useful ammo.

I know guys that went all in on 9mm, .223 and .45 to "simplify' their ammo needs...

I can see both sides of the issue. My firearms were bought for fun and enjoyment, and I want to shoot them at the range. My caliber layout is as follows:
.45 acp, a small group of 1911's, all full size.

9x19, a large group of what you'd call duty pistols. All metal framed, a lot are DA/SA.
*this is the grouping where I got 9mm instead of 40, 9 Largo, 7.62 Tok.*

9x18 Makarov, a small group of metal Eastern Bloc pistols.
.32 acp, a small group of small, often older metal pistols.
*this is the grouping where I chose to bypass .380 acp. *

It didn't start out that way, but as I picked up new toys, I tried to stick with calibers I already had. I have 9x18 makarov instead of 380, because that was the 2nd gun I ever bought (which was before I was bitten by the bug, I guess). For the longest time, I just had 9 in those 2 flavors. I eventually added the 1911's. And then the 32's.

I have a co-worker who was given a S&W 357 revolver. He went out and bought 357 SIG ammo, I guess attempted to put it in the cylinder (thank god it didn't work), then came into my office on a random morning to ask me about it. I'm known as the office "gun guy" despite my not adveritsing it...but working somewhere 20 years will do that.

Either way, when I told him it was the same thing, he actually began arguing with me about it. He then said he was angry because they wouldn't let him return it. He then tried to sell it to me despite my telling him I didn't own a firearm that shoots it.

With the modern day internet, it doesn't take long to research what ammo goes in what firearm...I con't understand why people don't do a tiny bit of research.

I am a big fan of simple. Over the past several years I have sold every gun that had not been shot in a couple of years, every 10mm, 45, 380, 243, 30-06 and .338 gun I own, and quit reloading in favor buying bulk factory ammo. I got rid of all the parts of shooting I don't like (except for cleaning) and kept all the parts I do like. Before I simplified I had made shooting such a time consuming chore I was going to range less frequently and enjoying guns/shooting a lt less in general.

But a big part of keeping things simple for me was buying enough in the calibers I do own that I would not have to worry about it during the next ammo shortage. Which is a lot easier to do if you only have a handful of calibers to stock up on.

I ended up having a core group of guns that work well for me and a few others that come and go as I try something that looks fun or I am curious about. And occasionally I find one I like so much it replaces something in my core group. But I am done with having so many guns and types of ammo I need a spreadsheet to keep track of them.

I got an ad from Bud's today; Federal blue box 22lr was 36 cents per round!!!

I know there's more than a little shortage of primers. Just ain't any available. And there's a pretty good stampede for 9mm and 223/556. Buddy told me that at the last gun show in Little Rock the standard was $1 per round - 9mm and 223. I assume the ammunition companies are coping as best they can between being hit with the huge demand and Covid 19 at the same time, but I also expect production is maximizing ammo production rather than components for reloading. I remember after Sandy Hook, there just was no pistol powder available.

I was at Shooters Discount Warehouse this week,
I asked the sales clerk at the gun counter, about a Glock 19.

He said there has been no common Glock come in for over 3 months.
(they had one reintroduced "GEN 1 Glock 17" for ~$700)

He went on to say, THAT was the reason there was NO ammo at the store,,
OVER 80% of ALL gun sales were to people that had never owned a gun before,,

Since they had never owned a gun, the new owners wanted an "instant stash!"

These new gun owners want WAY more ammo, than the guy buying a Glock 19 who already owns a Glock 17, and a Glock 34,,

AND they want to shoot more,, they are learning,,

So, I may have overpaid, (ok no "may have" about it, I did), but I picked up a spam can of Romanian Tokarev from SGAmmo for $490. Yes, I know. 40 cents a rd for surplus pistol ammo, non reloadable.

It cost me $54 for the barrel, I had the gun for over 20 years so I figure the cost of conversion saved me what, $200 on the gun (buying a new Tok). Using those mental gymnastics, that lowers the cost of ammo to under $300 for the spam can, still not cheap but not terrible.

Hey, there's 1000 rounds of 9mm 124gr Magtech in the for sale section..... only $800 :barf: Get outta here...

Update on my Tokarev 9mm-to-7.62x25 conversion...
Success!

Went to the range to test this out, brought a box (70 rds) of surplus Yugo ammo I got from a collector's site. SGAmmo briefly had this stuff, had posted that it was 100% with Yugo (Zastava) M57, but hard primer and on other Tokarevs often required 2nd strikes.
My Norinco T-54 was 100% reliable, and BTW left deep firing pin strike marks on the primers.

Been awhile since I shot this (in 9mm configuration), and I've since had fading vision (just turned 52, focus on front sights gets adventurous). Nonetheless, standing and shooting, was easily keeping everything on paper at 10 yds, using a 7" splatter target.
As I began to remember how the gun felt, things began grouping tighter.
I shot the last couple magazines at smaller targets, with consistent hits. My last 4 shots (due to the way I loaded, it was my last magazine), I took the Tok ammo box, approx the size of a pack of cigarettes, and put all 4 on it at 10 yds. With a little time (and better visual acuity on the front sight), I have no doubt that I could do better. My shots were a drift about 1" right of point of aim, so I was on the right edge of the box, instead of dead-center.

I know this ain't quite "ammo-centric", but again, I changed barrels to 7.62 Tok for the sole reason that I have lots of 9mm pistols (and ammo), and until this point didn't have any in 7.62 Tokarev. I retain the 9mm barrel and can literally swap it back in, and shoot 9mm during the same range session if I like; the concept was to increase potential to use different ammo.

I can now acquire and use 7.62 Tok, so I now have increased my options to keep shooting.

I'm not sure where the ammo market is right now because I haven't purchased any in a long time.

Just picked up a used pistol that my dealer transferred for me. He said he was having pretty good luck selling used firearms at the local shows lately. I sold him a few Colt 1911's that I wanted to be rid of. He didn't show any interest in those about 2 months ago. He said people are getting desperate and if he can get something to sell, he sells it, doesn't matter what it is. I guess finding something to sell is the hard part now if you happen to be a dealer. Great time to downsize without taking a bath.

We may be awhile catching up to demand.

Good point. I'm not desperate to buy ammo, but I do not intend to go to the range again until this pandemic mess is over. At my normal burn rate, I have a little over a year's supply of centerfire pistol ammo on hand. I also have about a 4-year supply of .22lr (which I don't shoot much) on hand. If ammo prices are still at their current ridiculous levels by the pandemic's end, I will increase my shooting rate of .22lr ammo, reduce my shooting rate of centerfire ammo, and try to make my centerfire supply last up to 2 years. In effect, I'll be using my .22lr stash as an ammo extender, kind of like Hamburger Helper. Let's hope it doesn't come to that!

What, me worry?

My shooting buddy stopped. He has cases of ammo but he won't shoot it. I think he said he had 5K of 9 MM. Not sure how much 5.56 he has but I know it's a considerable amount.

I haven't stopped shooting. Went to the range last week. Will go again as soon as we get a dry day. I recycle all of my ammo. Basement is full of components. Doing my part to clean up the environment.

There is nothing wrong with having a stash of ammo that doesn't exist as part of your shooting stock. Only for emergency use. I have 1K of 9mm NATO, and 200 rounds of 12 G spread between 00 and #4 buck, slugs and #6 pellets for food gathering. LOTS of .22LR.

What we need is a cargo ship full of primers coming from Europe.

Had to grocery shop for my home-bound mom today. While in Walmart, went past the guns/ammo area. There on a top shelf was a lone box of Winchester 333 22 ammo. $17 + change-about $.05/round. Also had 3-100 round packs Winchester Super X @ $7.54/box. Very few rifles/shotguns in the case. Already have layaway till middle of Dec. Too bad nothing to buy :-(
Once in a while, you get lucky and still find something at regular prices. Centerfire rifle ammo is getting a little more scarce, and shotshells not far behind. I always check ;-)

As of yesterday Dahlonega Pawn and Gun and had 1000 round bulk packs available at $500 with no limit. They did not sell out immediately and might still have some.

Still way too high but it is encouraging to see ammo available and people not panic buying it at that price as soon as they see it.

Right Or left. What is important is for the hysteria to go away. THAT is the real issue here.

Ammo prices are depending on caliber during the recent crazy run up to the election and pandemic. I'm still finding great prices on GunBroker for GI issued .30 carbine and 30-06...

If you're looking for 9 MM or .45 ACP, yes, it's a problem... but ammo is still available at good prices in many calibers.

There is a gun shop near me that I won't say the name of, but they are stocked with just about every caliber known to man. However, all calibers, even dirty target ammo, is a dollar or more a round. People aren't buying them because of it unless they are a new know nothing shooter. When other gun shops in my area actually have ammo, they still sell for 50 cents a round for handgun ammo, and 60-70 cents a round for rifle ammo. Another gun shop about 20 miles from me sold me five 20 round boxes of 5.56 at $10.49 a box, a 50 round box of Fiocchi 124 gr 9mm for $16.99, and a 50 round box of 45 ACP Fiocchi 230 gr for $19.99. It seems like some gun shops are just taking advantage of the situation because if the factories were actually selling to the gun shops at a much higher price, all gun shops would be at $1 or more a round.

Well they did today-10-23, do as I expected, change ship date to 11-8-20, which has me wondering why?, this is just a week and half after the ship date of 10-31- that I have been seeing for a few months. If they do ship them now, at least I'll get them for a decent price for what they have been selling for lately, but still not the best. For now I will take it though.
