45 GAP from 625 ?
Hi folks,
Like many of you, this Ammo shortage is hitting me right where it hurts - in the wallet.
I’d like to practice more with a newly-acquired 625, but the lack of locally available 45ACP and high online prices have me looking at other solutions.
Now, I may not be a fancy big-city attorney, but it would appear that 45GAP might fit down the barrel, if one could get them to go bang.
Using moon clips, would this be idiotic to attempt? The allure of $0.36 rounds over twice that -or more- is appealing.

Absolutly it will work and is not idiotic
Smith & Wesson revolvers that fire non-rimmed auto loader ammunition are designed to head-space on the moon clip. Yes it is true that 90% of them will fire without a moon clip because the case mouth can rest on the cylinder throat, but that is by happenstance, not by design
This same fact is why the Model 610 revolver can fire 40 S&W ammunition
Or the Model 940, 986 and 929 can all fire 380 ACP and 9x18 Ultra
Or why the 686 and 627s chambered in 38 Super can all fire the 38 ACP, 9x21, 9MM Luger, 9x18 Ultra and 380 ACP

I have found 45Gap shoots very well out of the 625.

Thanks to all of you for providing this information!!!!
I just ordered one box each of 2 brands of .45GAP to see how I like them. Both brands are cheaper than the price for .45ACP at my LGS, even with shipping, and the shipping should be lower if I order more next time.
I love this forum!!!!!!

So long as you are using a clip, it's pretty much like shooting .38 Special ammo in a .357 revolver. I doubt if ballistics will differ much, if any, from .45 Auto.

Reminds me of when our Gander Mountain closed a few years ago. Went in on the last day and about all they had left was 45 GAP and .41 Magnum ammo. Both were marked way down and I knew the GAP would work fine in my revolvers so I grabbed what they had left. Waiting in the checkout I noticed a few more boxes of the 45 GAP on the shelves at the cash register. The clerk asked if I was aware that this isn’t 45 ACP? Yep, I do. Apparently some folks found out at the cash register. Grabbed those boxes too. IIRC I picked up 10 boxes of 185 TMJ for under $6 per 50 rd box. It pays to pay attention.

Just an FYI on 45GAP. The target ammo is usually loaded to similar power of a 45ACP. The SD rounds are usually up in the 45ACP+P range. The SAAMI spec for 45GAP has it up at the 45ACP+P pressures.
For plastic guns I like GAP over ACP. For metal frames I will go ACP every time.
IMO Glock's failure with the GAP was designing it to be comparable to the 45ACP+P. They should have beefed it up more to get it to the velocities of the 10mm or better. Glock should have never tried to re-invent the 45ACP. That is why the GAP has become a boutique caliber that is embraced by few. Glock would have been better off creating a 41 Glock Automag if he wanted a legacy round that would have lived on.

Around early March the police supply where l worked part time took a number of 45 GAP Pistols on trade.Along with the pistols came cases of Gold Dot and Lawman ammo.Neither were strong sellers. The ammo was closed out at 150.00 a case. I ended up with a couple of cases for my 625,25-2 and Model 22.I was surprised how snappy the Gap ammo was and how well it preformed.Buy what you can before others figure out your plan.

That was the sole reason, AFAIK. Just a shorter version of the .45 Auto cartridge to attract the attention of those who wanted .45 performance from a smaller frame semiauto. Turned out that the marketeers guessed wrong.

The biggest thing to me about .45 GAP is that you actually seem to lose capacity from shrinking it down so you can fit it in a smaller frame. Not like say, .40 S&W where at least a Glock 20 and 22 are the same capacity. With the Glock 37 and 21 you actually lose 3 rounds in a full-size duty format. That to me makes it seem pretty pointless.

Gander Mountain did have some good close out specials toward the end. The only SP and LP primers they had left were Winchester. At that time, they only had about 8 thousand left at $17.99 a thousand but I bought all of them. I have always used CCI but these seem to work just fine.

The .45 GAP was GLOCK hedging their bets that the Clinton AWB wouldn't sunset. It was a 10rd capacity gun for a reason.

It was to get the punch of a G21 in a G17 size gun. I carried a G37 on duty and loved shooting it.
