a couple more considerations:


1) static defense is nearly impossible over an extended period of time. if your home comes under attack, you might be able to repel them once, but if they are determined, they will be back. so think about an escape route, and how much ammo you can reasonably load into your vehicle in a short period of time (and still have room for everything else you want to take with you). put that much in cans and set aside.


2) surviving a single gun fight is hard, let alone a series of them. think about armor. also think about what happens if you survive an attack but are injured. even a relatively minor wound can become infected and kill you days later. make sure your first aid kit has tourniquets, chest trauma pads, and plenty of disinfectant.


3) if at all possible, organize with your neighbors and make a plan to work together.

Depending on what handgun the ammo is for, I prefer to have 50-100 rounds of defensive ammo on hand.

Q. How much self defense ammo?
A. Not much

What you need is to run enough of your favorite self defense ammo through your weapon to make sure its operates flawlessly. Then practice with whatever as long as it has approximately the same recoil.

What you do not need is a lot of self defense ammo--a box or two should be plenty. Here's why:

a) the chance of your being in a self defense scenario is small
b) the chance of you needing more than one magazine in a self defense scenario is small
c) No matter how much self defense ammo you have, the odds of surviving enough self defense scenarios to use up a box of ammo are very small

There is good reason that some of the expensive self defense ammo is sold in small boxes with only 20 rounds.

I only have about 100-200 rounds of "self defense" ammo per caliber, but I've been trying to keep 3000-4000 rounds of ball ammo in each caliber. These days I'm wishing I had a lot more but I'm too cheap to buy at these prices (check that, I did order 400 rounds a few weeks ago for decent price, it's been on backorder).
If the SHTF I'll be carrying ball ammo for the same reasons the military uses it, cost, reliability, durability, barrier penetration and wound depth.
My thoughts on how much ammo I need to stock have changed. I used to think I needed enough to get me through an election or pandemic or zombie situation or the occasional riot, lately my thoughts tell me I need to keep enough stock to get me through the rest of my life because they won't come after our guns until they've come after our ammo first (keeps them from being shot).
I'm only 55 so I've got some buying to do.

I keep a bare minimum of 1K rounds of 9mm NATO ball at all times. It doesn't exist unless things get bad. Right now I have about 2,500 rounds. And maybe 3 boxes of 9BPLE +P+ hollow points.

I only worry about practice ammo, not sd. a few boxes of sd ammo is all one needs, practice or training ammo a different story never enough. train so your shots count and you don't need as much as those who spray and pray.

Like almost everyone else here, my "range ammo" stash is way more than my "self-defense ammo" stash. By the strictest modern definition of high performance self-defense ammo, I have only 175 rounds to my name, all in 9mm. But if you want to start including .357 Magnum semi-jacketed hollow points and similar... which I would personally count as more than adequate for self-defense... the numbers go up a bit.

The truth is that I don't feel a great need for super-expensive high-performance self-defense ammo. I know that goes against popular thought, but I'm okay with carrying plain old "range ammo" most of the time. But I'm just an old man with few enemies or daily threats. I'm not an ex-cop who put away a lot of bad dudes either.

What's enough?

If you had to use your firearm in a self defense situation and walked away.... you had enough. If the bad guy walked away, you didnt have enough.

I have a few SD rounds for my 9 mm and 45. Probably only a few mags worth. I'm not worried about SD ammo after that. The idea that FMJ doesn't work for SD is something that ammo/bullet companies came up with to sell more product. Now everybody believes FMJ is worthless for everything except punching holes in paper.

I have plenty of FMJ, probably never use it all.

Actually I'll probably stick with FMJ 9mm in my Beretta CX-4 pistol caliber carbine..... for reliability of feeding, and the fact that the velocity of the 9mm out of the 16" barrel will be closer to + 1300fps vs 1100 out of a 4" hand gun which is what modern hollowpoints are designed to expand at........ plus 30round mags and double taps.

I have enough pistol rounds in each carry gun to get me to my rifles. Or to get away if I so choose with my family in tow.

Well if you have a little land you could start with the rifle from...........

500 yards down to 200 then switch to your hand guns from 100 to 50 yards then..........

grab the 12 Ga. for the close work and pray for the best.

If in the "Hood" what ever you can load the fastest, I guess, if you can't stop the first wave.

My idea of hi-performance ammo is Remington Golden Sabers, Federal HSTs and Speer Gold Dots.

At any point in time, no matter how much ammo you have, you need a couple hundred more rounds.

I have this accounting dilemma. If I have a couple thousand rounds of 9 mm full metal jacket that cost me $.17 a round and it’s now worth upwards of $.50 and I could sell it for that. The way I see it is now it
cost me $.50 a round to shoot it because that’s what I could’ve sold for.

I try to maintain a 70-30% ratio of FMJ-JHP, but ideally I want 1 more round then I need.

I recently read a similar thread on another forum. I actually decided to get an approximate idea of my on hand availability.

Three primary calibers: 4 - 5 thousand
Other calibers (4): 1500 - 2000
Almost obsolete caliber inherited: 100 - 200

I load SD rounds for everything I have. I have also changed out my daily carry from a Glock 26 9mm 12+1 to a Glock 20 15+1. The truck gun is a S&W model 65 with 158gr JHP.

Nine mm is a range round. It is cheap as half of my projectiles are cast lead. At current ammo prices I am loading 9mm cheaper than what 22LR currently cost.I have 357 Mag SD loads at 13 cents per round and Factory is selling for a dollar around? Times are are Foxtrot Uniform.

Was in an online discussion of similar recently and had to quip -

'In a recent poll of 50 violent felons, 49 reported that any random FMJ target round entering their torso would cause them to cease that moment's activity and seek other environs.....'

Seriously - don't think there's a real answer, other than a lot is good to have.

Getting? Seattle has gone completely off the rails, and that was done quite a while ago. I have not been west of the King/Kittitas line other than for work since about 2005.

Ball=Range=practice=self defense. If it goes boom cycles the gun and makes a hole in what is aimed at, it will do nicely.

A person may not use many bullets in a gunfight but I think if he wants to win he might ought too shoot a whole bunch in practice. Larry

I have 500 rounds of .45 and 200 .40 S&W, which under normal circumstances is more than enough. Also plenty for a riot or self defense situation, but still low if Biden wins. I'm having a little problem finding .40 rounds. Prices haven't gone though. I've been paying 25 bucks for .40 and .45, and my LGS just had 50 round Winchester .45 for 27 bucks.
