Default Is my ammo ok?

Hi

I purchased 9mm ammo online for my m&p shield 2.0...it failed the plunk test...well.. I'll rephrase..it plunked, but some of the ammo wasn't flush against the rim of the barrel..is this ammo safe in your opinion..I readthat the bottom groove needed to be flush. I plunk tested every bullet and about 16 were almost totally flush and the rest the bottom groove of the bullet sat above the barrel rim by a couple of millimeters...

I'm fine keeping it, but the ffl facility kind of scared me a little, making me think my ammo might not be good for the gun or jam... what are your thoughts..is it normal to have a little variation? Btw they fit into the mag ok.

I have unused brass ammo from us Cartridge..

Be sure your chamber is completely clean when you try this test so you don't get false positives.

Chamber dimensions will vary from one manufacturer to another, and even within the same make and model of pistol. Ammunition dimensions may vary a bit as well. Manufacturing tolerances are exactly that, allowable variations in dimensions.

The "plunk" test tells us if the cartridge will fall freely into the chamber without interference, and that is the ideal situation. There is also the good old fashioned shoot-em-up test, load up a magazine at the range, rack the slide, see if the ammo feeds properly under slide/recoil spring pressure, pop off a few rounds to see how they do in your pistol.

I've loaded many thousands of rounds of 9X19mm over the years. My Browning Hi Power will digest just about anything I feed it. My S&W 9mm pistols are not very finicky either. But the same ammo has caused feeding problems in a Colt and a Kahr pistol. And that is reloaded ammo from my bench, not factory stuff.

Another thought, if your pistol is new make sure that the bore and chamber are completely cleaned. Some manufacturers ship guns with oil, preservative grease, or other gunk that can foul up the works.

Hi

It was clean...I can use the imperfect ones for the range... but are they ok to fire?

Ok..I just read your post...I actually cleaned it well...as long as I'm not doing anything dangerous by using it.

Eye protection and hearing protection, as usual. I wouldn't be concerned about shooting factory ammo from a reputable maker in a quality modern pistol.
