Default How common is it for online ammo sellers to ship ammo via USPS?

After an online ammo purchase has anyone ever received their shipment via the mailman? I know the legality but am curious if this is a prevalent practice.

I did get a brick of 22's once shipped with the gun. A definite NO NO. It came from an FFL

I've ordered ammo from a few different online venders, and it was either UPS or FedEx. It's been a while since I've ordered, but I don't recall ever seeing an option for USPS.

Not sure if that was helpful.

As mentioned above, it is a no-no.
But I have seen it done by individuals several times over the years.

All of my ammo purchased online has been delivered either by UPS or FedEx. Most occasions required a signature.

Mine always comes UPS. My favorite vendor charges extra if you want signature confirmation but I skip that and try to be home when it arrives.

Given the current financial status of the USPS, it may be time for them to reexamine some of their taboos and opt to transport ammunition and firearms. Revenue is revenue and politics be damned.

I was making conversation with a post master once about people sneaking ammo in the mail. He said he was sure it happens, but if one of the bomb sniffing dogs hit on the package, the shipper could be in big trouble.

They do ship firearms from licensed dealers.

My understanding is that it is 100% legal for a non-FFL to ship an unloaded long gun through the U.S. mail as long as it is legal for the recipient to receive it. For interstate shipments this means the receiver can only be an FFL or the holder of a C&R if applicable. It is also my understanding that a non-FFL can ship a long gun to themselves as this is not a "transfer."

FFL's can ship a handgun through the U.S. Mail to another FFL.

The above only concerns Federal Laws. Your Local State Law could be more strict.

Nobody can ship ammunition through the U.S. Mail. I have received several ammo shipments from large online sellers. It has always come UPS and it has always been marked with the appropriate ORM-D sticker.

I once mailed myself some once-fired brass repackaged in it's original boxes. It was clearly opened and inspected.

Default It has to go ground....

Regardless of the carrier, it isn't hazardous, but it has to go ground delivery.

Just got my order of 22lr ammo from Discount Tactical Supply in Texas. Their shipping charge reflected an inflated Fedex or UPS rate and I received my ammo via the USPS priority mail. I emailed them about this and their reply was "No it's not illegal for us to ship ammo through the mail, we've being doing that for years". I replied back with the USPS postal regs. So far....crickets!

USPS flat rate Priority with a tracking number would a bargain for shipping ammo if it were just legal. #70 max would be the only limit.

We once mailed some pretty rocks from Alaska to New Jersey. Cost about $17 for 40 lbs. Post Office counter worker said we were not the first.

Not common at all. In fact, it’s against the law.

I have got a lot of ammo from out of state vendors over the years. Always came via UPS or FedEx in a box marked D (which I assume is Class D Hazardous Material) and usually required an adult signature.

About 10 years ago I ordered a case of handgun ammo from a dealer and received it in a USPS flat rate parcel.

Apparently on that one day a tree fell in a forest somewhere that no one heard it come down, so there must have been no noise at all.

ORM-D is a classification used for hazardous consumer commodities in limited quantities, shipped domestically:

I had to think about this one for a minute. I remember my postman thanking me for the bigger biceps, but bulk bullets were coming in a lot at the time. Had just started reloading.
