Vista Outdoors buys Remington Ammunition
With all the supply troubles, hopefully this purchase from bankruptcy is helpful to us consumers.
Vista is already the parent company of a half dozen ammo brands.

Yeah I also just heard Ruger is bidding on the acquisition of the Marlin line from Remington. Hearings being heard today and might know more by this Tuesday Sept. 29. Be nice if the Ilion plant could be kept going for employees. Always liked the 1100 shotgun myself.

As poor quality as the average Remington has been since 2006 (compared to prior to Freedom Group’s acquisition), their ammo QC has always been top notch IMO. I’m hopeful that will continue under Vista Outdoors.

I grew up with Remington/Winchester/Marlin and Browning......Sadly most are only a former shell of themselves. In the 30's through the early 60's you could buy any gun from the mfg's above. And purt much count on it to last a life time.
Now most everything is stamped/plastic and spray painted.

They have a huge ammo plant just down the road from me that employs over a 1000 people. It has been running 24/7 and hope it continues to do so. I suspect this is good news for all the workers.

I can appreciate that elements of Remington are being saved, but I am very concerned about the monopoly that is being created, and the potential disaster that is lying in wait if an ammunition manufacturer is sued because someone used their ammo to commit a crime! Remember the federal law that was supposed to protect firearms from lawsuits like the one destroying Remington?
Doesn't Vista Outdoors also own: Federal, and CCI-Speer? Wouldn't that leave just Olin (Winchester) as the only remaining major American ammunition manufacturer if someone went after Vista Outdoors, like was done with Remington?
With the ammunition monopoly that seems to be forming, another Sandy Hook atrocity could make the current ammunition shortages look like a passing spring shower!

Yep, and they already have CCI, Speer, Blazer, American Eagle, Independence, Estate, and Alliant Powder. With the addition of Remington they have 3 of the 4 primer manufacturers in house.

I'm personally vested in this. My Marlin 60 has been in repairs for about 6 months. I guess Remington took them over.
They keep saying it will be sent out any day now.
Still waiting.
Still hoping.

Summary of the breakup
There's some good summary information here on how the company will get broken up.
As to any parts of the company remaining in New York, I can't see how, or why that could happen. Why continue to manufacture firearms or gun-related products in an anti-gun state? Then you have the expenses of the union. Any new owner will vacate NY in a heartbeat.

Not really. It isn’t about what feels right or what “should be”, it is absolutely all about money when it comes time to decide if it is a viable move.
Yes! It does happen. Les Baer did it — but he only moved like 5 miles so he was able to keep every person on his payroll. Magpul did it, but you must imagine the enormity of that move.
Look at S&W for example... Massachusetts is a hell hole of un-American anti-gun, anti-freedom and ridiculous laws. You don’t see S&W moving the rest of their production to Maine.

All of the named purchasers have production facilities elsewhere that can be ramped up. I know it's all opinions right now. My opinion, being a guy who runs a business, is that there will be no Remington anything in New York two years from now.

And here I was under the assumption the companies are owned by Vista, (Federal included). Vista Outdoors was formerly ATK. ATK then split into two halves and the sporting goods division was renamed Vista Outdoors?
I have been wrong before!

I find the news exciting for the industry and will be waiting to see what happens. Good for Remington as CCI/Speer and Federal are solid companies!

Any agreements which keep the manufacturing of quality guns and ammo going is ok with me. Firearms companies have a very long history of selling, buying and takeovers.

I would argue that it isn’t fact that these other facilities “can be ramped up.” If that ramping up were possible, they surely would have done it 2-3-4-5 months ago. Regardless of the COVID and the social unrest, the POTUS election has been scheduled and every business in the entire industry knows that a POTUS election means a ridiculous volume of sales.
To ramp up requires real estate, employees -AND- the equipment, not to mention the raw materials. In NY, all of that is turn-key-go right now.
Packaging up all the machinery, getting new land and factory space, outfitting all of it for production and filling the building with employees is absolutely possible but there is no part of it that is easy or low cost.
I’m absolutely in favor of making these anti-American state governments pay their dues for making massive failures in their politics... the more gun related companies we see in Montana and South Dakota and Wyoming, the better. But let’s not make it sound like Remington’s ammo facility in New York is only a couple of U-Haul trucks and a long weekend away from spitting out .45 ACP in Nebraska. Because it is far more involved than that.

Always been a fan of their guns as far as the older Wingmaster 870, 1100, and Model 700. Own 3 including a Model four in .270 Win. All have been reliable but these guns I bought more than 40 years back. Wish they had not produced those clunkers like the 710-770. Am hoping for the best and quality returns.

Read my Remington posting in Firearms and Knives - Other Brands. The group which is taking over the Remington branded gun line is apparently some investment company with no experience in gun making. I think there's at least a chance that the M870, M700, etc. may not be long for this world.

I buy this by the case for my Sig P226:
From what I can tell, Remington UMC "Green Box" ammo is a consistent high quality product that usually sells for a reasonable price

Last 870 I bought had a complete “fire control group” made of plastic. Not an heirloom gun. Joe

Agreed. That's why I scrounge around for more vintage 1100s and the old Wingmaster series. That LT 1100 in 20 gauge makes a sweet Upland gun. Too bad everything had to be cheapened so. Heck the Rems I have from the past look downright custom compared to the synthetic and ugly matte finished bluing seen on many today. Always disliked that "Express" model.

Regarding "Ramping Up" I doubt the Remington ammunition plant in Lonoke AR will miss a beat during the transition. Not in this market. I always expected that if there was to be a bankruptcy survivor in the Remington product line it would be the ammunition business, which looks to be a solid bet for some time into the future.

Arbitrage killed Remington. Not lawsuits. They were never the same after being taken over.
The valuations for the different parts are interesting. $81 million for Remington ammo and $30 million for Barnes Bullets and ammo line.
$30 milion for Marlin but just $13 million for Remington?
Remington has a large plant in Huntsville, AL. I wonder if it will remain. It is more modern than Ilion and non-union. The ammo is made in Ark. No need to move.
