Default Second hand ammo

Beware : Picture heavy and not for the faint of heart in these tough times for American shooters.

Full disclosure : I live in Switzerland

I never meant to be an ammo hoarder but it starts to feel a bit like it. In the last few years I started shooting more, and whereas 22 lr, 9mm, and 223 has always been readily available and reasonably priced in bulk (1000 rds), some other bigger calibers (38/357, 44, 45, 10mm etc.) have seen an increase in prices, sometimes with a reduction of offer and little choice of brands.

I started checking ads from private sellers unloading ammo they didnít need or want anymore (and I still do).

But then I placed some wtb ads and realised thereís a good number of people who gave up shooting, or sold a weapon but still had the ammo, who had an ageing or deceased parent and didnít know what to do with the ammo.

As a rule of thumb I offer to pay 20 to 30% below the lowest price I can get from the LGS for fresh bulk ammo. I am sometimes taking a chance, donít know how old the ammo is or how itís been stored and have no recourse.

And it has been quite successful.

One young gentleman had a huge trove of ammo : his fatherís buddy is a retired LGS in a somewhat remote region of the country. So he made a deal with the kid : he sells the ammo and they share the money plus he could keep stuff he liked for his ammo collection for free. Apparently there was over 1200 lbs of stuff. Lots of quality US and European stuff.

Now the kid lives 70 miles away from me and has no car. So he ended up coming down from his mountain on weekends by train (1 1/2 hrs one way) combining a delivery of abt 1000 rounds in his bag pack and grocery bag with a visit to his buddies in town.

Thatís the bounty :

This one is old (Ď56) repacked Swiss GP11 tracers

I ended up with 8300 rounds of all kinds for abt $ 2500.- spread over several months during the first Covid wave. I had to make a spreadsheet to keep up.

And from other sellers :

1920 rds of 7.5 mm parabellum (.30 Luger)

Some more of the same ammo in a military cantine

A 1200 rds can of Hirtenberger sub machine gun 9 mm

Surplus GP11 from an LGS

WWII .45 (empty can and one box only, he has a full unopened can too but pricey)

Various from a 90 yrs old gentleman

Old stuff from an LGS

Other private sellers

Well nearly all of it will be shot in the coming years so itís not really hoarding is it ?

And I still buy new stuff from LGS, always happy to support them. Just bought 1000 rds of Geco .357 for $ 450

That's a great haul and an inventive way to obtain your ammo. Be advised that the 45 ACP EC-7-44 ammo will have corrosive primers.

Over the years Iíve purchased a fair amount of Ďsecond handí ammo.

In your first post the 12th picture from the top has on open box, under the .38 special box with what kind of looks like shotgun shells cut in half?

What is in that box?

Are you asking about the Focchi box of .38 S&W Special? Those are marked as 148 grain wadcutters. If I read it correctly.

That is 60 rounds of GP11 packed in 10 X 6 rounds cardboard / metal clips for the old Swiss straight pull rifles like the K31

If anyone here knew that someone had that much ammo on hand, they would be calling it an arsenal and you would probably get a visit from the local, state and Federal folks.

CLASSIC12, I hope you have a secure mountain top lair to store all that ammo.
With the current ammo shortage in the US, you could find you are a target for invasion, just to get your ammo stash.

The ammo that you have along with the guns that you evidently have, would in some states and cities, if found out(like a complaint filed by an anti-gun neighbor), get you investigated as a terrorist and you would probably get a lot of news media time.
Your guns and ammo would would probably be seized and displayed for the TV Stations and you would probably have to go to court to get your property back. Things may even get worse.
Be glad that you live in Switzerland. For all of your ammo, GOOD FOR YOU!

Members, please, let's not duplicate the OP's photos when we post . What a stash! Usable, quality stuff. Wherever you live, I've found it wise not to advertise or discuss what you have. Seeing all this ammo, I wouldn't think twice, but lighting a joint would cause me to leave immediately.

Bought an additional old military wooden box and did some sorting out of the ammo, especially the loose boxes. I also have several unopened cases of various calibers (.32 ACP, .30 Luger, .357 Mag, .223 Rem, .308 Win etc..) so Iím well stocked. But sadly most ranges are closed due to COVID

More evidence of why nobody invades Switzerland. I managed to pick up some .35 Whelen, .280 and .38 Super under similar circumstance this winter.

The rare ammo I see is all the Norma handgun stuff, Norma stopped all their handgun ammo production a while back, now it falls into the collector category. And the Remington 38special 95gr SJHP is from the 70s/80s', the bullets as reloading components became no longer available too.

It's called a good start here in Texas.
(All joking aside, that's a very nice ammo purchase on your behalf.)

I dug out a box of this that I bought to display with my (reworked for WWII) Colt M1917 revolvers and WWII era holsters for them.

I might have a case or two of that beautiful Swiss surplus GP11 around the place for my K31. I handload for the 1889SR.

You wouldn't happen to have any spare GP90 or GP90/23 that you could share laying about the place do you?
