I Caved
I have a pretty good supply of ammo, and I feel sorry for those who have to buy in today's market. With current retail ammo availability at near-zilch levels and priced accordingly, I had planned to wait until prices returned to normal before I bought any more. I'm not doing any shooting until The Plague is over, so my supply is holding steady, and I have been feeling pretty smug about my ammo situation.
Recently, some Sellier & Bellot .357 SIG hollow point ammo became available at SG Ammo for 66 cents per round. While I don't need any more HP rounds, S&B has a good reputation, the price was semi-decent for HP in today's market, and in a pinch I could use them for target rounds. But I already had nearly a year's supply, so I passed. But I couldn't leave well enough alone. Just for the heck of it, I checked out these rounds on S&B's website. They have a rated muzzle velocity of 1476 fps, and muzzle energy of 597 ft/lbs. Yowsa! That's much greater than most other .357 SIG rounds, so I did what any dedicated .357 SIG shooter would do, I ordered a bunch. Yes, I Caved.
Any other Cavers out there?

No . Not buying anything at inflated prices , ammo or components either one . Did make an offer on some ammo but the seller wanted more than I felt like it was worth regardless of current situation so I did not get it .

Not here. If I don't already have it to load, I'm not buying until the craziness is over. If I ran across some 22LR at around 5˘ I might be tempted, but I'm not sure why, I think I have plenty.
I also might buy some primers if I ran across them at 3˘, but I think I'm good there too. No buying at nutty prices though.
S&B does make some good ammo and primers tho.......

I will cave when I find brass 9MM FMJ online for less than 36 cents or 22LR for less than .10. I have been in the right place at the right time and have been able to get Sig 115 FMJ and Federal 115 FMJ around that price in the past 3 months and 22LR as low at .07.
It does turn up from time to time.

No, at least not yet. I'm adequately stocked on 9mm and .38 Special for the time being. However, I have a couple of 1911s in .45ACP. I don't really carry them, and have never intended them to be anything but a couple of range guns, so not as high a priority for shooting as my carry guns. So, I don't have much ammo for them.
But my interest in 1911s has been rekindled in the past couple of months or so, and I was able to take them to the range for a little workout last month, which only strengthened my interest in them. I've even started carrying one of them around the house, loaded with 230gr HST. So I've been rethinking the possibility of carrying 1911s (I've always preferred DA guns). But I only have 50 rounds of FMJ for range use and 50 rounds of HST. While I can't afford to buy any ammo right now, I have been checking here and there for FMJ prices for more range trips. So if I can set aside the funds, I may look into getting a case if it's not too expensive.

Sounds like you are at about the same frame of reference as I am... I have “plenty” for my needs and will just try to replenish at prices I consider reasonable. Right after the big brouhaha surrounding Sandy Hook I was buying my first AR (don’t ask!) and paid $859 for a case of 1000 rounds of factory ammo. I’ve promised myself to never be in that situation again.
I even bought up a decent supply of 9mms before I really started shooting that caliber much, so at this point I still have enough I haven’t started casting and reloading yet.

No, not for ammo. I rather hold on to what I have.
Some distributors have raised prices of certain items, then I'll have to adjust my prices as well, but most hasn't.
Also, Buffalo Bore doesn't take advantage of the situation and neither is Weatherby should you order straight from their website.

NOPE, not buying anything at inflated prices. Not shooting for the past 7 months has saved my ammo and components. In a few days, we'll all see where things stand or are headed.

Nope. I have plenty. I’ll leave what’s available to those who didn’t plan well or are first time gun owners. May start selling some though.

Seems to me that if I were to swear off shooting until the gundemic or gunmageddon is over, it would be incredibly EASY to “not cave.”
I have no intention (currently) to take such a drastic stance. Still, no, I’m not caving.
As a side bar to the discussion, I fully understand that folks get caught in bad situations and how that happens, I am condemning noone. HOWEVER! I’m from the camp that says every time you pay some inflated price for something during a toilet market... you are casting your vote that supports high, rotten prices.
To reiterate, I understand that good folks are sometimes found in lousy positions, but it’s still a single up vote that says “your price is horrendous AND HERE IS MY MONEY.”

I have built up my ammo reserves to about 1800 rounds 9MM and 2500 rounds 22LR in the last 6 months. Reasonable prices are still out there it just takes searching and good luck to find it when it's available. Ammoseek.com has been my best resource for finding it.

I started reloading in about 1962. I have a pretty good supply of Winchester 158 grain and 125 grain jacketed hollow points I bought probably 15 years ago for five cents each probably from Midway. I've got a bunch of primers I bought for one cent each by the 5000 and some 2400 around here I bought for five dollars a pound. I can roll my own .357 magnum for probably under ten cents a round and make any safe speed I want. I can do lead .45 auto target ammo for about five cents per round with Bullseye and three cent bullets purchased 20 years ago.

Thankfully my silos are pretty well stocked.
I did pick up a few boxes of oddball stuff like .327 (more than I've paid before but less than average going prices) while traveling through rural AL for work last week.
Rounds and components are going for up to 10 times what I have in them! Penney primers are going for 10 cents each!
I'm tempted to sell some, but I doubt it will ever be found for those prices again.

I hear and read about people going out and blasting away 100 to 500 rounds of ammo at one outing, and then complaining about high prices and low availability. Makes me laugh.
I shoot less than 50 rounds a month nowadays, and some months, none at all.
I personally consider ammo too much of a precious commodity to recklessly blast away when usually 10 to 20 rounds a week or month is enough to maintain skill, once learned. I got pretty good many years ago, so very little additional ammo is required to “ maintain “ the skill level I am comfortable with.

I do not shoot ammo faster than I can replace it. While I have a good supply, I still purchase ammo when I can find it at sane, pre-hysteria prices.

The only thing I am caving on is getting set up for the 59 Beowulf. With it not being a inexpensive round to begin with I broke down and have a couple hundred rounds of loaded ammo and I just got the dies, cutter and chamber checker yesterday. Earlier in the week I got a 1000 primers and two pounds of powder and 50 bullets. I still need go go to the range with it to verify that the rifle will run, the last outing resulted in jams due to not modifying the metal 223/556 magazines enough, I have 4 new 50 Beowulf polymer mags and hit the 2 metal mags with the files a couple days ago.

There must not be much of a market for 10MM around here,,
A local LGS, just last week, had 50 round boxes of new 10MM ammo for $21 per box.
That $21 per box does not seem to be a penny more than the "normal" price for 10MM,,
so,, in this case,, I became a "caver",,
I bought it, because I only had reloads for my 10MM,,
I never considered the 10MM a SHTF gun (it is a Gold Cup),, but,, who knows,,,
It is NICE to have factory ammo for the 10MM,,,

OP Update
One benefit of Caving during the current ammo shortage is that when your (rare) order comes in, you can get prompt service. I ordered my ammo at 11 am yesterday, it was packed and ready to go by 12:30, and UPS Ground had it on my front porch at 10 am this morning. SG Ammo is about 350 miles from my home, and that was an all-time record for quick delivery. It's a small silver lining, but a silver lining nonetheless.

It seems like not shooting is “caving” more than paying higher prices for ammo is.
I shoot at least once a week. That is why I have ammo. Its not for some imaginary shootout with the forces of evil.
I’ll check for ammo in the big box stores while I am out and about. The other day I found 100 round packs of WWB 115 grain 9mm ball for 22 bucks each. I got two, some 30/30s for 17 bucks a box, and a 500 round box of Aguila .22 LR hollowpoints for 26 bucks at Cabelas. I almost got some 32/20s but I passed. If I owned a .218 Bee I could have stocked up.
The hated big box stores seem to be holding the line on prices, while the beloved Mom and Pop places are charging a buck a round for crummy steel cased ball.

The big box stores are not sticking to some heartfelt axiom by not raising prices, they are just out of touch and not very bright.

I stock up on supplies so I can keep shooting when ammo becomes unavailable. Yesterday for the first time in 6 months I found primers at the LGS. They had 4 lonely bricks of large rifle primers with a limit of one brick per person. Price was not jacked up higher than usual, so I bought one, not because I need them now, but because you never know how long this shortage will last.

I'm still shooting 200-300 rounds a month of centerfire + .22 LR but then again I cast my bullets and have an ample stock of primers and powder. I have enough defensive rounds but wish I had a small surplus.

And that seems to be the conundrum. I'm good for a couple years of pistol league and rifle practice at my normal rate, but there's this little nagging voice that says " What if this madness lasts longer than that?". I haven't bought anything at outrageous prices, but I'm tempted.

I've got more than enough ammo. I'd actually like to get rid of some .22 LR and 7.62x52mm (.308 Winchester) FMJ ammo.

Last weekend, when I was at the Sig Academy, they had 20 round boxes of V Crown defensive ammo for about $22 a box, 50 round boxes of range ammo for about $25, and 50 round boxes of JHP for about $52 a box ... all of it was 9mm. I passed. Unfortunately, my schedule didn't allow for a visit to the Kittery Trading Post, so I don't know how their prices are running. Fortunately, in addition to the P365 that I won, I also won a $100 gift certificate from Atlanta Arms.
If I can find factory bullets, I may buy them, but if I see primers, some will follow me home. I noticed that Sportsman's Guide has Federal 9mm 124 gr FMJ in stock for almost $34 a box ... at that price, I'll roll my own!
However, I did notice that the necks on some of my rifle match brass are starting to split ... not really that bad after perhaps 30 reloads!

I agree. I also shoot weekly at about 200 rounds per session, so I enjoy shooting a lot. Unfortunately in my case, I have, as they say, an underlying health condition that would make it perilous for me were I to contract The Plague. So I'm staying home as much as possible until it's over. I'd much rather be a Caver than an Absent Comrade! I'm frustrated beyond words (at least words I can use on the Forum) at not being able to shoot. But I'm old enough to have learned that patience is a virtue. And I expect that in the not-too-distant future, I'll be back at the range putting more dents into my ammo stash.

Sorry, but I don’t feel sorry for those who were not smart enough to build some inventory of ammo or reloading components for the current price and availability situation.
This is far from a new phenomenon.

Not everyone should be faulted for being caught off guard
This shortage sucks for everyone but I have a hard time feeling sorry for those of us that have been shooting 5,10,20 years. They should have seen the writing on the wall and been prepared for this one. The people I do feel bad for are the ones just getting into guns and ammo to protect their families. While most of us here have always been able to protect our own homes whether the police responded to our calls or not, these new folks rightly assumed that the law would always be there to protect them. I never envisioned bad guys taking over police stations and entire cities, what a horrible and helpless feeling that must be. Who'da thunk?

I bought two boxes of WW 22 mag hp for $14/box but I don't feel too bad because Walmart wanted $11.83 per box for the same stuff. I got two of those too.

It's new to those who don't shoot. Most people have no idea there is an ammo shortage. Even hunters and shooters think you can go to the store and get whatever you want. I'm a bullet caster and people tell me all the time you can get free wheel weights at such-and-such tire store.

The current shortages started at a time when I had about 1-1/2 years of supply (at my then-current rate of use), but also coincided with a nasty shoulder injury as well as during my recovery period following cataract surgery. The indoor range I usually rely on was closed due to Covid-19 from March to October, further curtailing my weekly routine.
I went through all of my stockpiles and found that in addition to the loaded ammo I also have sufficient primers, powder, and bullets for another 2 years or so (of my usual routines).
So, I still have about 3-1/2 years of my usual usage before I might feel the big bite. Since the shortages continue, and seem to grow worse all the time, I'm thinking maybe I should stretch those 3-1/2 years out to 10 years. All I'd have to do is shoot 1/3 of the usual amount per range trip, or make my range trips every 3 weeks instead of weekly.

You seem to be new to firearms. If so, why did you decide to get a firearm now, and never before? Just curious.

Not new. Grew up hunting with Dad and grandad. Never really looked to need a self defense gun. Have thought about getting my carry for years. Just figured with the world as it is today, it was a good time.

I went to my LGS, he has most all caliber ammo on the shelf ( and at non-gouging prices.)
I traded a NIB leather holster(that cost me $17, amazon pricing error ) for 2 lbs of pistol powder, and I picked up 1000 LPP.. $44 a little high but they were there.

Was at the local Cabela's today (open Thanksgiving Day? Shock) for some BP supplies. Looked over the ammo racks - flat out nothing rimfire or centerfire, unless you want .460 Ruger or .500 Smith. Oddly, they had a lot of that. Lots of 7 1/2, 8, and 9 shotgun, but why?
I bought a case of G2 230gr+P jhp for my .45's, and a case of purple 62gr Win .223 practice jhp from SGAmmo earlier this year. Have good stock of .22, 9mm, .38, and roll my own .357. Got my home handgun defense well stocked, but still need shotgun ammo. 00, #1's, or #4's. Not out there.

Ammo at a decent price is still out there. I've had decent luck at yard sales and especially estate sales. You might have visit 50 or so but I've bought some tarnished Frankfort Arsenal match 30-06 that cleaned up pretty, 38 special, 22lr and 9mm. within the last 6 months at a darn good price. Stuff might be 25 years old, not pretty but so far what I've shot went bang.
The hunt can be fun.

Back when Walmart was selling the maroon boxes of Federal Champion for relatively low prices I made it a habit to get 6 boxes per week. End result is I have a rather large bank of 40 S&W and 45 ACP safely put away.
I also reload for every caliber I shoot and am well stocked on 9mm, 40 caliber, and 45 ACP handgun bullets and brass. Note, added 2 new shotshell presses to my reloading setup last week to feed the new tubes I purchased for my 12 gauge Beretta 686 in 410 and 28 gauge.
Going forward one thing the Libs have learned from this current shortage is that the key to making things inconvenient for gun owners is to see to it that ammo is unavailable. So if things ever return to "normal" 1) expect higher prices and 2) plan on building your own bank even if it does cost a bit more.

It does turn up from time to time.

I saw some 9mm @ Cabelas on Wednesday for $15/box (limit 5) and grabbed 3 boxes. I didn’t really need it, but since you almost never see it right now ... well, you know how it goes.
I still feel a bit dirty for paying nearly double what I was getting it for just 9 months ago, but console myself that at least I didn’t go whole hog and buy all 5 that they’d have sold me.
Y’all may now proceed to call me an idiot for leaving 2 boxes on the shelf. LOL

You obtained additional ammo due to an uncertain future, and left some for the next guy, win-win.....

I've slowed down on my centerfire shooting to once a month or so.
I've been shooting .22LR several times a week, as I've been able to pick up 400-500 rounds every week at Walmart to keep my supply adequate.
They have been getting in mostly CCI, the price on Mini-Mags is $7.97 per hundred pack.
Most of the summer the local Sportsman's Warehouse stores (50 miles away in either direction) would get in some Blazer or Geco in 9mm and .45 ACP once or twice a week, I quit showing up when they opened as I have a couple thousand rounds of each.
I actually took 400 rounds of Federal 9mm FMJ to a gunshow last week and traded it for a 1969 Belgian made Browning SA-22.
The gun had some light rust, was missing a few small parts and needed a new butt stock as the old one was missing a big chunk of wood where someone had taken it down improperly.
I had about $100 in the 9mm ammo, found a used Belgian stock on E-Bay for $110, and ordered $25 worth of parts that it needed.
So for $235 I'm now the proud owner of a Browning ATD.

The reason why you will find number 7 1/2, 8, and 9 loads is because these are the shot sizes used for shooting Clays. Fact is that almost any shotgun range will have postings that state that only # 7 1/2, 8, and 9 may be used.
Number 7 1/2 loads are typically used for shooting Trap, because Trap features targets thrown at a greater distance from the shooters position. However some Sporting Clays shooters will keep some # 7 1/2 shot shells in their pocket for the stands that feature long range targets. BTW, Sporting Clays can have shooting distances ranging from 10 yards out to 60 yards.
Number 8 loads are basically All Rounders and probably the most common shot size for shooting Sporting Clays because they will work well at any distance out to about 50 yards. As an general purpose shot size it will also be seen in Skeet, 5 Stand, and Trap.
Number 9 loads are the Standard for shooting Skeet. However # 8 or 7 1/2 will also work well in 20 and 12 gauge loads. Once you get down to 28 and 410 #9 produces shot clouds with smaller "holes" so it's distinctly preferred for these calibers.
