Default Ammo Shipping ... extra fees

My adult daughter failed to restock 380 an 22 some years ago.

I can send her a little. I am trying to discover what ORM-D fees FedEX or UPS will add to the cost.

There are no extra fees...weight, how far it’s traveling and insurance (if wanted).

Recent example: Last week I sent 40 rounds of .300 Savage rifle ammo via FedEx ground service from Colorado to New York. Shipping charge was $17, adult signature service added $6. Small box about 6X6X6" weighed about 5 lbs.

Note: Ammunition must go by ground service, air delivery is not allowed.

A couple tricks as I recently sent a couple packages of 380. Because it is pretty heavy, when they ask what it is I say "plumbing fixtures". Then I ask them if the box will go "One Rate". Both did and they then put the box in a bag and wrap it up and put delivery stickers on each side. Got to the destination very quickly and for only $11.xx. Both would have been in the $22 range without One Rate.

If you're in the US I believe you may have made a mistake. Ammo is hazmat and requires an ORM-D label.

Shipping Ammunition: UPS - United States

UPS? Because USPS says you can't ship ammo.

As far as I know it is legal to ship ammo by ground but not by air.

1. It is illegal to ship ammo by mail (USPS).

2. Ammo is not Hazmat and there is no extra charge for it. It must go by ground (UPS or Fedex) and requires a label on the box; used to be ORM-D, now just a symbol.

UPS says it's Hazmat and requires the ORM-D sticker.

Regardless, we're getting a little in the weeds here about OP's question. We've established that it can't go USPS, has to be ground, requires a label of some kind and does not incur extra charges.

From UPS:
" ... and must be prepared under the rules for a fully regulated hazardous material.

Ammunition will be transported only when packaged and labeled in compliance with 49 C.F.R. § 172 (Hazardous Materials), and must be shipped in accordance with the UPS Guide for Shipping Ground and Air Hazardous Materials.

---

Is a Hazardous Materials Label or Marking Required?

Yes, (until December 31, 2020) packages that meet the definition of Cartridges, small arms must be marked with the proper shipping name "Cartridges, small arms", and designated as "ORM-D"
"
