I buy online when the shipping is free and get at least one case of my favorite ammo when I can find it. The way things are going now I'm going to order about 4 cases to protect my supply.

I tried reloading shotgun shells,, ONE TIME,,,
I gave away most of the reloading supplies, then I bought a dozen cases of shotgun shells.

I learned that if I do not like reloadin' it,, buy several cases of it,,
That applies to whatever I am shooting as to what "IT" is,,

I buy ammo by the case all the time. It used to be 1000 rds in 50 round boxes. Now it seems to be either 200 rds or 500 rds and it's a lot more expensive than it used to be. I even sell it be the case occasionally.

I started buying ammo by the case way back in the 1980's. When surplus military guns started being imported again there was a sudden influx of large amounts of surplus ammo to go with them. Besides all the surplus stuff there was a lot of new manufacture ammo available in popular calibers, especially from China. Norinco made good ammo in 9mm, 223 and 7.62X39 and it was cheap. Later others got into the market, especially the Russians with the Tula, Wolf and Bear brands.

Since I got used to buying ammo for all my military caliber guns by the case I started buying other calibers that I shot regularly the same way. Price per shot was cheaper and I like having a good supply and not having to go look for ammo. Even though I've been reloading since the 1970's I find great comfort in having a ready supply of factory ammo put back. Nowadays I usually only load for the oddball caliber guns I have though I still have all my dies (and components!) for reloading the popular rounds if I feel the need.

When ammo was plentiful and cheap, I bought cases with free shipping. I am now very happy I did.........

When I was a kid, we would buy shotgun shells by the round to hunt with. No one could afford a whole box, never mind a case. The LGS was owned by an old guy who would sell us 5 or 6 rounds at a time. Great times!

When I noticed the 9mm ammo going up in price I decided to buy a case, gun sales are up over 300% so shells are getting harder to come by plus police officers use this caliber.

I reload much of my own ammo. But for a long time it was actually cheaper to buy mil-surp ammo by the case. 9mm, 5.56 & 7.62 could be had cheap and you didn't have to spend the time and effort of reloading. I've ordered a bunch of it. Well, them days are gone.
I happen to be fond of the .38 Special +P 158gr LSWCHP (FBI load) for carry in my revolvers. About a year or so ago, I just wanted a couple of boxes for carry ammo. Couldn't hardly find it anywhere and was out there was priced way too high. When I finally found some in stock at a reasonable price, I just ordered a case. Now I have plenty for years to come.
I've also bought cases of ammo dirt cheap locally off of Armlist. Somebody sells a gun, but has a ton of ammo left over for it. In many cases, they just want it gone and out of their way.
Now days, all the ammo sellers on Armslist are wanting scalper's prices.

I'll have weekends where I'll send 400 rounds of shotgun ammunition downrange. So, yeah I have purchased ammunition by the case. However those purchases were simply to provide fresh hulls for reloading. While the savings for reloading are not great for 12 or 20 gage when you get to 28 and 410 the savings big. Seriously you can reload 410 for about 3.70 per box of 25 versus 12 bucks or more for purchased 410. BTW, 3/4 ounce 28 and 20 gage costs about 4.40 per box to reload and 1 ounce 12 gage is about 4.70.

Back in my trap & skeet shooting days, we'd buy 2 dozen cases of Win. AA at a time.

Picked up 2 cases, 1000 rounds, of 38 S&W at a gun show September of 2019 for $200.00. Thought I could use for trading fodder. Along comes the pandemic and prices sky rocket. Have a reasonable supply of 38/357 on hand. Dug out the old Iver Johnson Cadet and been having fun shooting up the trading fodder. Still put 10 rounds through my model 36 to keep sharp...but just having fun with that old Cadet.😉

I was never a big skeet or trap shooter but had a couple of friends that were into it. The club they shot at ordered 7.5 shot by the ton.

The best purchase I ever made was buying two cases of Navy Arms 32 Rimfire, one 32 Long and one 32 Short back in the early 1990s. I still have 10 boxes left. Back in the 1990s I was buying mostly antique S&Ws, so the Navy Arms ammo production run was like a gift from above for my Model 2 and Model 1 1/2 tip-ups.
